Brick House Campground provides primitive camping in the Sumter National Forest region with basic accommodations at $5 per night. Sites include fire rings with grill tops but lack picnic tables at all sites. The campground sits about 5 miles from the small town of Whitmire and connects to several trail systems in the area. Vault toilets serve the 21 available sites spread throughout the camping area.
What to do
Hiking the Palmetto Trail: Alston Trailhead connects directly to the statewide Palmetto Trail system, making it an excellent base for day hikes. "Beautiful trailhead, lots and lots of bikepackers. It's so cool to have somewhere like this in our own backyard," notes Ron K. about Alston Trailhead.
Fishing opportunities: Lake Greenwood State Park offers shoreline fishing with designated areas for anglers. "The lake was beautiful and clear, the grounds and trails on the park were quaint and well kept," writes Adam W. about his experience at Lake Greenwood State Park Campground.
Disc golf: Chester State Park features a professional disc golf course for those seeking recreational activities beyond hiking and water sports. "There is fishing, kayaks and canoes at the boat dock for rent and to our children's disappointment no swimming in the lake. Also there is a professional disc golf course on site," reports Bill C.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the cleanliness of facilities at campgrounds near Whitmire. "Very well taken care of campground. Vault toilet was clean. There are a couple pull-through spots," notes Allyse about Brick House Campground.
Quiet camping experience: The rural setting provides peaceful camping with minimal disturbances. "We stayed here for three nights in space number 17. Surprisingly it was quite level. The whole time we were there there was only usually about three or four other campers in the 21 spaces," shares Lisa M.
Affordability: Budget-conscious campers appreciate the low-cost options in the area. "Easy access from I26. Spent a week here and really enjoying it. Has 21 spots. What you should know
Water access limitations: Many campgrounds in the area require campers to bring their own water. "However, there is no running water. The closest water is 5 or 6 miles in either direction, so pack plenty," advises richardhoerz about Brick House Campground.
Seasonal variations: Hunting seasons significantly impact campground occupancy and atmosphere. "Arrived after hunting season, informed was busy then. 4 or 5 come and go," mentions Michael W., highlighting the difference between peak hunting times and off-season camping.
Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds may present challenges. "Beware of the giant pothole when turning off the 66 onto the Brickhouse Road. We hit it and it jarred the trailer so much it broke our back window," warns Lisa M.
Reservation requirements: Understanding the booking system is essential. "This campground is run by the state and reservations have to be made through rec.gov. Check with them or the local ranger before headed out. It can get tricky through hunting season versus non hunting season," notes richardhoerz about Sedalia Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: For families with children, campgrounds with play areas provide essential recreation options. "Rv and primitive sites, bathrooms with hot showers, playground for the kiddos, a lake with rental kayaks and paddleboats, and the camp host was super friendly. Easily my favorite state park in SC so far," shares Damon O. about Chester State Park Campground.
Swimming options: During hot summer months, access to swimming areas becomes important for families. "My family and I visit here often. Great access to the lake. Convenient to Charlotte metro area," notes Kevin A. about Chester State Park.
Pet-friendly trails: Families camping with dogs will find numerous trail options. "We like it. It's been quiet the times that we've been there. If you're a road cyclist this is heaven, and some decent trail riding down to the lakes," says richardhoerz about Sedalia Campground.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: RV campers should prepare for variable site conditions. "Some of the sites are not very level but you can do it," advises Creighton C. about Croft State Park Campground.
RV size limitations: Many campgrounds in the area have space constraints for larger rigs. "Access for bigger rigs too," notes Michael W. about Brick House Campground, though site availability for large vehicles may be limited during busy periods.
Hookup availability: Full hookup options are limited in the Whitmire area. "Our family had a great time! Lots of stuff for the kids to do! Bath house clean and laundry facility great!" shares Erica C. about the private campground options with more amenities.
