Camping options near North Huntingdon span across western Pennsylvania's Allegheny Plateau region with elevations averaging 1,100-1,300 feet. The area experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping months. Winter conditions often close seasonal campgrounds from November through March, though several facilities remain open year-round for cold weather camping.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Keystone State Park Campground offers a lake where families report successful catches even with minimal experience. "The lake is great for fishing with plenty of hiking trails. There's plenty to do in surrounding areas from Ft Ligonier to the shops in the town," notes Luke K.
Biking on the GAP trail: Blue Canoe RV Resort provides direct access to the Great Allegheny Passage trail. "The GAP trail rolls right through the middle of this traditional KOA campground. The seasonal RVers and weekend warriors have long claimed their sites, but for through riders on the trail there is a special place to camp, close to the west-bound entrance," writes Shari G.
Swimming access: At Raccoon Creek State Park Campground, visitors find water recreation options. "It's a great place to take the dog out to swim and chase geese and ducks. A great little beach area to lay out and enjoy the sun," reports Jim L. The campground maintains designated swimming areas with seasonal lifeguards.
What campers like
Scenic viewpoints: Mountain Top Campground delivers on its name with elevated perspectives. "You actually does really sit at the mountain top and gives you pretty good views of the valleys and surrounding areas from any of the rim campsites. Fall was in full effect and it was AMAZINGLY beautiful," notes Dave.
Spacious tent sites: At Fox Den Acres Campground, tent campers appreciate the room to spread out. "Each site was very spacious and well shaded. Fire ring and table at each sight. Restroom were a short walk away," reports Dena L. The sites feature level gravel pads with surrounding grass areas.
Clean facilities: Visitors to Keystone State Park Campground consistently note the well-maintained grounds. "Very quiet clean facilities quiet hours are from 9pm-8am our tent site was more like an RV site as we had a hill side but each site has a 30ft concrete pad to park on so I just put our tent on the concrete pad site 96," explains Daniel F.
What you should know
Seasonal limitations: Several campgrounds operate on restricted schedules. Keystone State Park Campground runs "1st Fri April to 3rd Sun October," requiring advance planning for shoulder season visits.
Road access challenges: Some locations require careful navigation, particularly for larger rigs. "The hardest part is finding it. The roads get narrow so if in an RV call them for the easiest way in. If you are Overlanding like us just follow the map," advises Corey L. about Mountain Top Campground.
Water level fluctuations: At Bush Recreation Area, the dam operations affect water recreation. "The lake level was high because of the dam nearby so fishing was non-existent, but it was peaceful and pleasant," reports Tim J. Campers should check lake conditions before planning water-based activities.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Consider site location in relation to play areas. "We rented space 16 late August 2020 and our friends (and their kids) rented #17 on the inner circle, right next to us with the playground right behind us. Great spots! Our kids were within easy eye and earshot of the playground," notes Tim J. about Bush Recreation Area.
Pet-friendly sections: Dog friendly campgrounds near North Huntingdon often maintain designated areas for pets. "We stayed in sight 32 f loop. It is sunny so pick your spots. Clean rr's with good showers but a bit old. There is a lake with swimming and kayak rentals," advises Larry M. about Raccoon Creek State Park Campground's pet section.
Shower facilities: Ohiopyle State Park provides bathroom buildings, though quality varies. "The restroom and all the bathhouses badly need updating. The paint is peeling, they smell like mildew and the siding is rotting on them. They are clean but the creepy and gross factor are too much," warns Nora M.
Tips from RVers
Leveling requirements: Some sites present challenges for RV setup. At Mountain Top Campground, "nice campsite the closest to Pittsburgh that i found. 35 mins... level gravel lots with wood boarders... lots of grass on each site as well," reports James B.
Dump station access: Not all pet-friendly camping options near North Huntingdon provide full hookups. "For the black you can dump here or have someone pump out on Wednesday morning (no charge). 20 minutes to Pittsburgh staff friendly and very helpful," notes Doreen C. about Mountain Top Campground's services.
Hookup configurations: Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort offers "beautifully maintained lawns and gravel campsites, modern hookups, good shower/laundry facilities, nice fire rings with built in grills, trash pickup service," according to Heath T., making it suitable for extended stays with dogs.
