Cabin camping near Newtown Square, Pennsylvania provides a strategic home base for exploring southeastern Pennsylvania's Piedmont region, with elevations ranging from 400-500 feet. This area experiences four distinct seasons with humid summers averaging 85°F and winter temperatures often dropping below freezing between December and February. Cabins typically fill 2-3 months in advance for summer weekends, with midweek availability offering more flexibility for last-minute planners.
What to do
Disc golf course: 18+ holes at Boulder Woods Campground provide a challenging course with varied terrain. The campground sells and rents equipment for visitors who don't have their own. "They also have a disc golf course and they rent and sell discs. That's where we fell in love with disc golf," shared one visitor.
Lighthouse hiking: 1-mile trail leads to Turkey Point Lighthouse at Elk Neck State Park Campground with panoramic Chesapeake Bay views. "The lighthouse trail is a must. It is about a five minute drive to get to the trail though, but is worth it!" according to one camper who made the trek.
Canoe trips: 2-3 hour paddles available on the Brandywine River with equipment rentals nearby. "There are two lakes, Scotts Run Lake and Hopewell Lake that you can fish, kayak, canoe or just relax by. There are several warm water fish in the lakes including northern pike, chain pickerel, bass, walleye, muskellunge and several types of panfish."
What campers like
Private wooded sites: Natural buffers at French Creek State Park Campground create secluded camping spots with mature trees and understory vegetation. "As long as you don't stay right across from the bath houses you will find ample shade at your site. There are so many trees and brush in between most sites you can't even really see your neighbors," noted a frequent visitor.
Clean facilities: Daily maintenance keeps most campground bathhouses in good condition year-round. "The bathroom at the campground is very nice and new however it is a little on the dirty side. I don't know if they have anyone who goes around to clean the bath houses but it certainly was in need of cleaning."
Urban escape options: 20 minutes from Philadelphia at Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA provides quick access to metropolitan attractions while staying in cabin accommodations. "Every night after my cacophonous conference in Philadelphia, I couldn't wait to turn down Timberlane Road and see that little KOA sign glowing in the darkness."
What you should know
Level site variations: Most parks feature gravel pads for RVs but tent sites can be challenging. "It was a little bit on the dirty side. I don't know if they have anyone who goes around to clean the bath houses but it certainly was in need of cleaning. There are two large showers as well with very warm water."
Seasonal operating schedules: Several parks close in winter months or offer limited facilities. "Stayed over for one night in early December. Showers and bathrooms were great! The honor system of payment at the office makes it really easy to come in late and leave early, make sure you have cash on you as it was unclear if checks were accepted."
Proximity to transportation routes: Some campgrounds sit near highways or the Pennsylvania Turnpike, creating ambient noise at certain sites. "A little loud at times with the turnpike right there. Overall, I'd weekend here... But not now knowing my camper isn't good enough."
Tips for camping with families
Playground facilities: Multiple play areas at Spring Gulch Resort Campground accommodate different age groups. "Tons of amenities for families including mini golf, an arcade, pools, fishing ponds, etc. Not to mention live music on the weekends! Some of the facilities are a bit worn down, but that didn't stop us from having a great time."
Animal viewing opportunities: Farm animals visible from certain campsites offer educational opportunities for children. "The most unique aspect we found was the cow pasture. It was a lot of fun watching the cows eating and interacting. I intentionally reserved the site we had to be close."
Activity programming: Weekend organized events at many parks provide structured entertainment. "Every Saturday they had an organized activity for the kids... EVERYONE was extremely friendly. I will definitely return - best kept secret!!"
Tips from RVers
Site angle challenges: Some pull-through spots at older campgrounds feature tight turns that can be difficult for larger rigs. "I did have major trouble backing in because the road is too narrow for a 45' motorhome to back in on a nearly 90-degree angle. So difficult, that I cracked the bottom of my front cap catching the grass and gravel beside the grave road."
Hookup positioning: Water connections sometimes require extended hoses due to shared hookups between sites. "The water hookups are shared every other site. I was lucky my 75' hose barely reached the distance needed. Be sure to bring extra hoses."
Length restrictions: Seasonal site policies at some parks limit RV age. "They only allow seasonal campers to be 10 years old or newer. Ours is 13. Very disappointed. But for a weekend away, it's a great place."
