Dispersed camping sites within Bald Eagle State Forest span 194,000 acres of dense woodlands at elevations between 600-2,300 feet throughout central Pennsylvania. The forest connects several smaller state parks near McClure, creating a network of camping options with varied terrain from riverside flats to mountain ridges. Winter temperatures regularly drop below freezing while summer daytime highs typically range from 75-85°F.
What to do
Tubing and river activities: The Juniata River at Buttonwood Campground offers calm water perfect for summer cooling. "Tubing down the river is so fun and the highlight of a stay here," notes Heather G., who visited in 2020. The campground provides tubing shuttles included with their activity wristbands.
Swimming at natural beaches: Poe Valley's lake beach provides a natural swimming area with gradual entry points and clean, cool mountain water. "The beach was nice, not crowded, soft sand, and warm water. It's a great lake to kayak or paddle board on," reports Taylor V., who camped there in summer 2021.
Hiking through tunnels: The tunnel hike near Poe Paddy State Park Campground creates a unique walking experience for all ages. "The walk to the tunnel is quick and easy for all ages. Beautiful spot," shares Sarah, who camped with family. The tunnel path follows an old railway bed alongside the creek for approximately one mile.
What campers like
Natural sound barriers: The mature forest at Raymond B. Winter State Park Campground creates natural privacy between sites. "Huge pines and hemlock, ferns everywhere.. just stunning. The grounds are extremely well maintained and clean," reports Greg S., who visited from Georgia. The forest density helps reduce campground noise even when sites are full.
Clean facilities: Reeds Gap State Park maintains exceptional bathroom facilities. "Bathroom with hot showers is nearby. One shower stall in each bathroom and the showers had a large dressing area," notes Cheryl K., who stayed overnight. Other campers praise the eco-friendly design and reliable hot water.
Dark night skies: The remote location allows for exceptional stargazing opportunities away from light pollution. "The night skies were beautiful (starry starry night w/little light pollution) and trails galore leading directly from the campground," shares Kassie F. about her experience at Raymond B. Winter State Park.
What you should know
No cell service: Most dog friendly campgrounds near McClure have extremely limited connectivity. "We pulled in to camp for the weekend, nice location right on the creek. Initial thoughts were clean, quiet, not very secluded, if we didn't need phone service it would have been perfect place to camp," reports a visitor to Penns Creek Campground.
Reservation requirements: Many campsites require advance booking, especially during peak summer months. "You can book your site online and go straight to your site! No check in required. If you are passing through and there are sites you can sign in by the honor envelops," explains Amanda H. about Little Buffalo State Park.
Activity fees: Some parks charge additional fees beyond camping costs. "Plan on spending $20 per person for an activity wristband that includes all the extras including mini golf and tubing shuttle," advises Bryan S. about Buttonwood Campground. Always check each park's website for current pricing structure.
Tips for camping with families
Creek exploration: Shallow water access points provide safe play areas for children. "The creek and river are perfect for curious little ones to explore. Great fishing spot," says Sarah about Little Buffalo State Park Campground. Look for sites with gradual entry points to water.
Playground alternatives: While formal playgrounds are limited, natural features create play spaces. "Site 108 had a site path right to the creek. I wouldn't recommend big campers as most of the spots would be a pain to back into. But if you're looking for a quiet campground in the woods, this is it!" shares Jolene J. about her stay at Poe Paddy State Park.
Campground activities: Buttonwood Campground offers structured activities for children. "There is tons to do for the kids. Ours really enjoyed the bounce pillow, laser tag and peddle cars the most," notes Bryan S. The campground also features a small pool and shaded areas for breaks from summer heat.
Tips from RVers
Sizing constraints: Pet friendly camping options near McClure often have limited space for larger rigs. "Not as rustic as other places or a state park, but still a very enjoyable weekend trip. Most sites have electric water and cable hookup," reports Jason H. about his stay at River's Edge RV Park & Campground.
Hookup availability: Check each campground's utility connections before arrival. "We stayed at site #3 with 150 feet of creek frontage backed by a beautiful playing field carved out of the forest," mentions Greg S. about Raymond B. Winter State Park, which offers electric hookups but no sewer connections.
Leveling requirements: Many forest sites require careful positioning. "When you arrive you are met by a staff member on a golf cart that takes you to your campsite. He helped us back in and get level and offered to bring us ice or wood if we needed it," explains Bryan S. about Buttonwood Campground's helpful check-in process.
