Winding roads with sharp turns lead to this 73-site campground within Black Moshannon State Park, where forested sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. The campground operates from the second Friday in April through December 15, with most sites offering electric hookups and some providing full hookups including water and sewer connections.
Cell service remains extremely limited throughout the park, with Verizon and AT&T coverage described as "basically non-existent" by recent visitors. "Verizon and AT&T cell service were basically non-existent," reports Joni P.. "Every once in a while a text would come in or send but very spotty." Payphones are available at the ranger office and beach bathhouse for emergency communication.
The campground features gravel pads that reviewers consistently describe as level, with sites offering picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern hooks. Two bathhouses serve the camping area, both noted for cleanliness and hot showers at no additional charge. A playground sits within the campground, while a second playground operates near the swimming beach. The beach opens mid-May through mid-September from 8 AM to sunset, though multiple campers note the lake water stays cold even in midsummer.
Moshannon Lake allows electric motorboats with permits, and boat rentals operate seasonally. The park maintains 24 miles of hiking trails, including two that connect directly from the campground to the lake. Mountain biking trails cover 4.3 miles, while hunting is permitted in designated seasons. A camp store and concession stand operate during summer months, offering basic supplies and ice cream.
Reservations are strongly recommended, as this popular campground books early for peak seasons. Site 70 at the loop's end and Site 22 with full hookups receive specific mentions from campers. For those exploring the broader region, places to camp around Port Matilda provide additional options within the area.
