      Hickory Hollow Campground

A new favorite quick getaway for me and the wife

This campground checks all our boxes. Beautiful scenery, quiet location, spacious campsites, full RV hookups, well-placed fire rings, dog park, nice large bathhouses, polite staff, and Wi-Fi that works.

This is located about an hour away from my home, so we plan on making this our go-to for quick camping getaways throughout the year.

Highly recommended. Definitely worth checking out.

      Hickory Hollow Campground

      Wow!

This may be the first campground I give a 10 out of 10! All the amenities your could want, it's clean, sites are leveled, it's maintained beautifully, there are cows in the distance, fully stocked store, friendly staff. Laundry, bathrooms, fairly spacious sites, a pool, dog park. Very, very nice.

      Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

      Pet friendly campsite, with electric

While most of the campgrounds in the park are no pets- there are 2 loops that allow your furry companions! Loop F includes electric spots! Loved seeing the 'neighbors' dogs get excited and curious when I walked my 4-legged best friend around the site. Clean area , close to a modern bathroom (a few stalls & even 2 showers!) Looking forward to going back at the end of the month.

      Awesome staff!

Very conveniently located off the interstate. Follow the signs to the campground NOT the GPS in order to avoid some narrow and sharp turn roads. Staff were super friendly! Front desk staff were knowledgeable and and helpful. We had some issues with our power, and Larry was at our site within minutes to fix it. Big open dog park! There are only a few shaded spots. Spot width was a little narrow where we stayed (on the hill), but perfect for a quick overnight stay. Bathrooms were fairly clean, laundry was nice. The pool looked very well maintained.

      Hickory Hollow Campground

      Soooo spacious!

I was the only tenter at the time of my stay; had the whole place to myself. The sites are spread far apart and wooded. Table and fire rings are at each site. They have a brand new bath house which was spotless and a well kept dog park for the furs. If desired, there is a group campsite and the use of a pavilion too. The camp store if beautiful and has everything in it should you forget something. I’ll definitely be back.

      Laurel Hill State Park Campground

Nice state park with a lake

Stayed 3 nights because I wanted to be centrally located to the he Flight 93 Memorial and Falling Water (about 30 miles to each). The non pet section is heavily wooded and very shady. The pet section is more of a loop set up with some trees. The no pet section had no, zero, zilch cell service so my stay was super quiet. Site 173 was easy to back into and had a large picnic area with a fire ring next to the brook. There is a lake with a small beach and a boat launch and numerous hiking trails. The park will s very nice pretty and during the week fairly empty. I would recommend

      Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

Let a Local Give You The Scoop!

In the past 5 years, I've made 13 trips to Raccoon Creek State Park and spent 16 nights in a tent there. It is my local state park and I can tell you lots about it.

The D loop is really great tent camping at Raccoon Creek State Park. It's tents only, no RVs. So it gets a really fun, party vibe on Saturday nights during the summer. There's a trail right to the beach near the D loop, so it's a great place for families to go with pets. The sites are big, wooded, and all close to the bathroom.

The C loop, however, doesn't take pets (which stinks). When we have our dogs with us, we gravitate towards the C loop. It's fine, but it's not as fun as the D loop.

When we don't make a reservation and we have our dog, we end up in the F loop. It's not our preference (but--let's be clear--even the worst site in the F loop is better than NO trip!).

      Laurel Hill State Park Campground

Be Sure to Pick the Right Loop

There are two main loops in this campground. One that is pet friendly and more of a pitch-your-tent-in-the-yard thing and another that is pet-free and wooded. We didn't realize and stayed in the first one. Dogs were barking at all hours and there's no privacy. We drove through the other one and it looks so much nicer. Campsites more spread out with trees in between and way quieter. Will definitely stay there if we return.

    Guide to Bentleyville

Bentleyville camping areas feature hillside terrain with elevation changes that affect campsite access and levelness. Most local campgrounds sit at elevations between 900-1,200 feet, experiencing four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F. Fall temperatures drop to 45-65°F, making late summer and early fall popular camping periods with cooler nights and moderate daytime temperatures.

    What to do

Hike near waterfalls: Ohiopyle State Park offers access to Cucumber Falls, located up the mountain from town. "Cucumber Falls is on the right. Again, get there early for one of the few parking spaces to walk down to the falls," notes Dave V. The falls flow more heavily after rainfall or in springtime.

Explore historic locations: Near Dravo's Landing Campground, visitors can find an old cemetery adjacent to the campsite. "It's close to an old cemetery which is useful in telling ghost stories around the campfire," mentions Lauren C., highlighting a unique evening activity option.

Water recreation: Whispering Pines Family Campground provides brook access where campers can enjoy water sounds. "Site was right on the water and listened to the bubbly brook all day," shares John R., describing the relaxing waterside atmosphere.

Outdoor fitness: Dog-friendly activities extend beyond simple walking at some parks. "Friday nights are Toke With A Goat Yoga at 7 at the barn weather depending," explains Ashley F. about Laurel Highlands Hemp Cannabis Farm, offering a unique activity for visitors.

    What campers like

Budget-friendly options: Fox Den Acres Campground provides affordable tent camping with amenities. "Tent site was nice and conveniently located next to the bathhouse," reports Joanne H., noting the convenience factor for primitive campers.

Spacious campsites: Large pull-through sites accommodate various camping setups. "The pull through sites are very ample. Gravel roads and level sites. Lots of grass areas for play and walking," explains Msmetoo48 S., highlighting the practical layout at Fox Den Acres.

Easy highway access: Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA offers convenient interstate access for travelers. "Easy highway access great for overnight travel," states Candi S., making it suitable for those passing through the area.

Dog exercise areas: Pet-friendly campgrounds provide dedicated spaces for dogs. "Big open dog park!" exclaims Brandy S. about Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA, making it convenient for travelers with pets needing exercise after long drives.

    What you should know

Terrain challenges: Many campgrounds feature sloped sites requiring careful setup. "A dozen or so of the sites are not level, not only that but they are narrow and where you sit is a slope making it very uncomfortable," Kevin D. warns about Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA.

Navigation considerations: Some campgrounds recommend specific travel routes. "Follow the signs to the campground NOT the GPS in order to avoid some narrow and sharp turn roads," suggests Brandy S., providing practical advice for arriving at campgrounds without difficulty.

Wildlife awareness: Secure food properly at Kentuck Campground and other locations. "Just be sure to secure your food overnight - if you don't, the raccoons will make quick work of it!" advises Sarah Q. from her experience at Dravo's Landing.

Bathroom facilities: Bathhouse quality varies significantly between parks. "The floor in the women's bathroom had holes in it. It smelled funny in there too. This place needs a major remodel!" reports Cynthia K. about Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA, indicating potential maintenance issues.

    Tips for camping with families

Pool access verification: Call ahead to confirm pool operations, especially during shoulder seasons. "We did watch kids fishing and pulling fish out as soon as they put their line in!! So much fun for them," notes Patience W. about Fox Den Acres, suggesting alternative water activities when pools aren't open.

Playground proximity: Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA offers play areas for children needing post-travel activity. "There was a playground for the kids to unwind after a long day on the road," Glynnis A. mentions about a nearby KOA, highlighting important amenities for families.

Scheduled activities: Many dog-friendly campgrounds near Bentleyville organize regular events. "They provide activities almost every evening, making sure every age range is catered to throughout the week," Heather H. explains about Fox Den Acres Campground, offering entertainment options beyond natural attractions.

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds. "Quiet in the camp but lots of highway noise at night if the breeze is just right," warns Kathryn about Fox Den Acres, suggesting site selection away from roads for families with light sleepers.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Choose extended stay areas for more seclusion. "We are in the extended stay part of the campground which is quiet and slightly more secluded than the other spots," advises Ariel F. about Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA, sharing insights for longer visits.

Road access assessment: Pet-friendly campgrounds with RV access have varying entry conditions. "Very steep narrow roads to access campground and sites," cautions Chris H. about Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA, highlighting navigation challenges for larger vehicles.

Early arrival benefits: Arriving early helps secure better sites, particularly at popular locations. "A nice pull-thru spot. Spots were pretty close to each other," reports Glynnis A. about Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA, indicating the importance of spacing awareness for neighboring campers.

Laundry facility quality: Some campgrounds offer exceptional laundry options. "Laundry facilities are the best we have encountered. Big machines and dryers making life easier and less time spent doing laundry," shares Mary Elisabeth D., noting this practical amenity at Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA.
