Winter temperatures average 45°F while summer months typically range from 60-70°F, making the region a popular year-round camping destination with notably cooler summer temperatures than inland areas.
What to do
Crabbing adventures: Located directly on Tillamook Bay, Jetty Fishery Marina & RV Park offers on-site crabbing rentals and fresh seafood. "You can rent items to go crabbing or just eat some of their fresh clams, oysters and crab. We did a bit both! Staff is friendly and hard working," reports Jaime K.
Beach exploration: Cannon Beach is accessible via a short walk from several campgrounds. "Just east of Hwy 101 in Cannon Beach, this RV resort is an easy (really!) 10 minute walk to the beach, just north of Haystack Rock. A sidewalk underpass under 101 and a path through a small city park makes it a family-friendly, dog-friendly walk," notes Mari H.
Tillamook attractions: Many campgrounds serve as convenient bases for visiting the Tillamook Creamery. When staying at Harborview Inn and RV Park, one camper noted: "It is a nice walk around and from the RV Park with the marina and harbor areas providing great views. Portside Bistro is a short walk and was very enjoyable."
What campers like
Waterfront views: The oceanfront setting is a major draw for many campers near Nehalem. "Our site was right on the water so I really enjoyed watching the sun set over the bay! Sites are close together but I didn't mind at all," shares Jenn M. about her experience at Jetty Fishery.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently note the cleanliness of facilities at Netarts Bay RV Park & Marina. "Very clean RV site with views of the bay and inland views. I enjoyed walking my dogs out to see the birds, crabbers, and seals," writes Pilar F.
Close to town conveniences: Many appreciate being able to walk to nearby shops and restaurants. "Walk to beach, coffee and restaurants if desired. Wonderful coffee at Sleepy Monk Roasters! Wayfarer is a great restaurant and they deliver to the park," mentions Layton R. about Cannon Beach RV Resort.
What you should know
Site spacing varies: Campsites throughout the Nehalem region range from spacious to quite tight. At Paradise Cove RV Resort & Marina, a camper advises: "We chose a site down by the bay, what a beautiful view, clean bathroom s and showers. Appears to have seen it's better days though."
Reservation necessities: Many campgrounds fill quickly, especially in summer. "About 4 years ago my wife, who was my gf then, and I took a road trip to Seattle to see her grandma... Unfortunately all the state parks were packed and so we're the local private campgrounds," recounts Elijah A. about finally finding space at Jetty Fishery.
Seasonal pricing: Prices at RV parks near Nehalem can be higher during peak season. "Expensive ($80-90/night) but great facilities in a good location. Great showers, internet, hookups, pool and campsites. Relatively quiet… not a KOA," reports Mark B. about Cannon Beach RV Resort.
Tips for camping with families
Indoor amenities for rainy days: The coastal climate often brings rain, so parks with indoor facilities are valued. "There's a pool and spa. There's also a lodge with a game room and laundry. Full hookups. Paved loop for kids and bikes," notes C M. about Cannon Beach RV Resort.
Beach access considerations: When camping with children, easy beach access makes a difference. "Central place to stay for access to Ecola State park to the North and Oswald State park and Beach to the south for hikes trail," shares one camper about proximity to multiple beaches.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Thousand Trails Seaside offers unique wildlife viewing. "Fun fact: In the winter months you will likely see the local elk herd around town," mentions Mari H., providing an educational opportunity for families camping in winter months.
Tips from RVers
Hookup specifics: RV campsites in the Nehalem area offer various hookup configurations. "Flat paved rv sites, can see it getting crowded during peak season. Prices are on the higher end but you get what you pay for as they accommodate for fishing and crabbing," advises C.W. about Netarts Bay RV Park.
Internet connectivity: Working remotely can be challenging at some campgrounds. "The only reason it is not a 5 star is the lack of good Wi-fi. There is 'wi-fi' available, but you can only use it for email? Part of why we choose RV parks from time to time vs a state park or dispersement camping is to have access to some amenities," explains Julie F.
Road noise considerations: Highway proximity impacts some Nehalem area RV campgrounds. "Oregon Hwy 6 runs alongside the RV Park. It is a major source of road noise during the day and late night. The RV Park is a moderately maintained facility," warns Cande D. about Misty River RV Park.
