Best Campgrounds near Afton, OK

Camping opportunities around Afton, Oklahoma center on Grand Lake, with several developed campgrounds and RV resorts providing lake access and amenities. The Bernice Area of Grand Lake State Park offers concrete RV pads with water and electric hookups, while private resorts like Pine Island RV Resort and Monkey Island RV Resort provide additional options including cabin rentals. Most campgrounds in the area accommodate both tent and RV camping, with several offering full hookup sites for larger rigs.

Grand Lake campgrounds typically operate year-round, though facilities and amenities may be limited during winter months. "The lake is gorgeous and the campground is clean. On the farthest side from the exit, there is a really nice paved trail with lookouts and various paths to the lake," noted one visitor about Bernice Area. Most campgrounds offer electric hookups ranging from 30 to 50 amp service, with water connections available at most sites. Several campgrounds provide dump stations, though not all sites have sewer connections. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the area, with visitors reporting good Verizon coverage at most locations.

Waterfront access represents the primary draw for camping in the Afton area, with the highest-rated sites offering direct lake views. "We spent several days camping at Bernice State Park. Spacious, open sites and beautiful views of the lake," shared one camper. While some campgrounds provide significant shade, others have more exposed sites that can become hot during summer months. Facilities vary considerably between locations, with state park campgrounds offering basic amenities like showers and flush toilets, while private resorts often include additional features such as swimming pools, boat rentals, and on-site stores. Grand Lake's popularity means campgrounds can become crowded during peak summer weekends, with many campers bringing boats for lake activities.

    Bentonville Bike Camp

Great place to explore Bentonville and amazing biking trails

Great private small business! Owners Julie & Jason very easy to communicate with. Campspot registration went smoothly. While we enjoyed Dry Camping meadow, they have a few basic cabins, and several electric sites. If you enjoy supporting a small family business and basic accommodations this place is for you!

    Sweetwater Forge Campground

    Clean, inviting, quiet, wonderful owners.

Jeff and Stacy are incredibly kind and accommodating. This campground is wonderful. We were able to use their new pavilion for a family get-together, which was great. They also have several new cabins and a private bathhouse/laundry room, coming soon. We will definitely be coming back again and again. Even when it poured down rain one day, there were no puddles or muddy areas to navigate around.

    Thank you,

Jeff & Stacy Beach, for a wonderful 4 days!

    Spencer Creek

    Nice place to camp.

This is a nice place to camp. It got a little crowded on the weekend but the weather is good so, have to expect that. Bathrooms are close by and were very clean and well maintained. They have 2 large dumpsters located at each end of the camp and the campground was cleaner than most I have been in. No view of the lake from my site but when you walk up the hill to the bathrooms you have a nice view. Stayed 3 nights on my way to Colorado.

    Shady Beach Camp & Canoe

Easy to plan a trip and relax once you arrive

Once arriving the owners/ staff were friendly and helpful. The convenience shop had everything you could possibly forget at home and plus! They have thought of everything you might need while camping. Kayaking/ Canoeing is so laid back , there was absolutely nothing to fuss over. Bonus was the float ended right at the camp site. How can that be topped!

Will be returning hopefully for many years.

    Ballard's Campground

    Stay away

After reviewing the camp map, I found C1 shown as a pull thru site available for the week we would be staying. Easy peasy. Until 2 days before we are set to show up, I get an email and we have been moved to a back in site. When ask I was told pull thru sites are for are monthly renters. So why did your reservation system allow me to rent for a week? Then they tell me C1 isn't a pull thru site after all, although the map outside the store shows it as pull thru, great then I shouldn't have been moved give me C1. It is already filled. So a site I reserved was given to someone else and I never got an honest answer as to why. During the conversation the staff was rude and condescending. The camp store is not stocked well. The sites are close together and not level at all. The bath house smelled moldy. The worst campground we have ever stayed out.

Guide to Afton

Grand Lake dominates the camping scene near Afton, Oklahoma, with over 46,500 surface acres of water and 1,300 miles of shoreline. Seasonal water level changes can affect shoreline camping locations, especially during spring when levels typically rise 2-4 feet. Camping options include concrete pad sites for RVs and designated tent camping areas, with most campgrounds remaining open year-round despite temperature fluctuations from below freezing in winter to above 90°F in summer.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The waters around Echo Hollow - Twin Bridges offer excellent access to multiple waterways. "This is a lovely campground that sits between two rivers. There's two boat ramps that give quick access to Grand lake, Spring River, or The Neosho River," reports Jennifer Z.

Boating access: Many campers bring boats to explore Grand Lake from Honey Creek Area. "Big park with so many site options. Very large sites on the lower area, upper area is a little more tight. Easy access to the launch ramp for smaller boat rigs," explains John F.

Family activities: Eagles Landing Resort & Recreation provides options beyond just water recreation. "This campground felt a bit like a summer camp. There is a good sized pool, a pond with a couple of kayaks and pedal boats, and an (aging) mini golf course," says Stephen K.

What campers like

Lake views: Sites at Grand Lake O' the Cherokees RV Resort offer scenic vantage points. "Cedar Oaks is a very easy campground to find and get into... This site had a large lawn area due to site 91 being decommissioned because of flooding a while back. We enjoyed a very nice lake view as this site is probably the best site in the park," writes MickandKarla W.

Seasonal camping: Many Grand Lake campgrounds have dedicated yearly sites for repeat visitors. "My family has had a membership to this resort since about 1996. As leadership changes the quality fluctuates, but it has always been a reliable campground. The indoor and outdoor pools are always fun," notes Mandi R. about Pine Island RV Resort.

Nature observation: Wildlife viewing adds to the camping experience. "The lake is gorgeous the campground is clean. On the farthest side from the exit, there is a really nice paved trail with lookouts and various paths to the lake. Lots of ducks, geese and herons," describes one camper at Bernice Area.

What you should know

Site placement considerations: The location of your campsite can significantly affect your experience. "The sites are closer than I prefer and it feels a bit crowded, but we still enjoyed it. The spaces are packed tightly so there really is no room to spread out & enjoy," notes Jeremy C.

Seasonal fluctuations: Off-peak camping provides a different experience. "There weren't any people during the week. It was nice and peaceful. You can put your camping chairs down by the lake and sit. Not a good place to fish, unless you have a boat. The lake is shallow quite a ways," explains Barb T.

Wildlife awareness: Some campgrounds have active wildlife. "Im here annually and love it but let me warn you of the raccons. I left my van a few hours at night and they got in and tore the place up! They got in the back pop open window," warns Ramblin R.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly locations: Gopher Valley - Twin Bridges offers family amenities. "This campground is fully paved with both full hook up RV camping area, tent camping area and areas that work for both. Campground has a large pavilion which can be rented. The pavilion has a huge BBQ grill. Campground has a small playground for the kids," notes Dexter I.

Summer crowds: Many popular spots get busy during peak season. "This place was very quaint and exceptionally close to the lake. However, in the summer the day use areas are PACKED," cautions Kristie P.

Family-oriented parks: Some campgrounds specially cater to family gatherings. "We come here and stay every summer! They have good size places you can stay as a family, as well as lots of RV spots. We absolutely love the mini golf course and game facility," shares Brittany G.

Tips from RVers

Hookup logistics: Be prepared for utility connection challenges. "The electrical and water hookup for most sites was a strangely long run, so bring a long extension cord and hose," advises Stephen K.

RV pad quality: Concrete pads at most Grand Lake campgrounds provide stable parking. "Nice quiet campground on Grand Lake. Spots are spacious on back-in concrete pads. Each spot has 50/30/20 power, bbq grill, fire ring, picnic table and light on the power pole," reports Rebecca B.

Trailer parking: Overflow areas accommodate boat trailers at many of the best places to camp near Afton, Oklahoma. "Very nice overall, very easy access to Grand Lake and Cherokee Casino. Sites are good size and have full hookups. Good overflow parking for trailers," notes John F.
