Best Campgrounds near Wickliffe, OH

Camping locations surround Wickliffe, Ohio with a mix of developed state parks and more rustic reservation campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. Punderson State Park Campground offers year-round camping with both tent and RV sites, while smaller options like Penitentiary Glen Reservation Campsite provide more secluded experiences for tent campers. Most campgrounds in the region feature fire rings and picnic tables, with varying levels of amenities from primitive sites to those with full hookups. Several locations include access to water recreation at lakes like Punderson Lake or the nearby Lake Erie shoreline.

Reservations are required at most campgrounds in the area, particularly during the peak summer season from May through October. Many sites offer both electric and non-electric options, though full hookups with water and sewer connections are limited to certain campgrounds like Punderson State Park and Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA. Weather conditions impact camping experiences throughout the year, with northeastern Ohio experiencing cold winters and moderate summers. Road access varies by location, with some sites requiring short hikes from parking areas. "We stayed at one of the primitive sites up the hill, which was perfect for tenting and had excellent drainage even after getting poured on all night," noted one camper at Punderson State Park.

The quality of tent sites receives mixed reviews throughout the region. Many campgrounds feature wooded settings with ample shade and privacy between sites. Penitentiary Glen Reservation offers particularly secluded experiences, with one camper noting, "It's like you have the forest to yourselves out here." Walk-in sites at locations like The West Woods require some effort but reward campers with increased privacy. Campgrounds closer to Lake Erie tend to be more popular during summer months. Families frequently mention appreciating amenities like playgrounds, hiking trails, and kayak rentals at the larger state parks. Noise levels vary significantly by location, with some campgrounds experiencing road noise while others provide quiet, natural settings perfect for hearing wildlife.

    Punderson State Park Campground

    Solo tent camping went well

I had originally gotten lot #81 but quickly got it switched to #83 because it was just waaaay better. Flatter ground and I was able to go deeper into the woods.

I went the first week of October, and on weekdays, which was great because I had no neighbors.

Staff was great, check in area also has a little store with all the essentials stocked up, lots of trails, great for biking and hiking, a park for the kids, fishing, canoeing, showers, flush toilets, all that fancy stuff was there.

Only down side was occasional road noise which I just can't seem to escape in my area of Ohio. And I personally wouldn't go here on weekends or over the summer because there are RV sites everywhere, which is another thing that dominates my area of Ohio.

Going again, as long as I don't have the kids, I would try for a test space as far from the road and is deep in the forest as possible. Do that at tge right time of year and I think this will be a great spot for me in the future

    Woodside Lake Park

    Nice quiet camping

Quiet tent campsite parked in this area. There are quite a few RVs parked here and it appears lively, but the tent area in hilltop was quiet and secluded. Very kid friendly. At night, there was highway noise in the background. A lot to do here but also very close to Cuyahoago Valley National Park.

    Beautiful

There are many sites taken by permanent campers for the summer. There are pickleball courts in park. Right on Lake Erie, nice hot showers.

    Village Green Campground

    Long-term RV

This site is great if you’re moving in with your RV. I’m tent camping, and while there were tent sites (about 5), it wasn’t the atmosphere I generally go for.

Positives- there are bathrooms, showers, and laundry. Right on Lake Erie. Fine for overnight.

Cons- this is a live-in RV site in the outskirts of Ohio.

    Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

    Woodside Lake Park

Old Park With Iron Laden Well Water Beware

I stayed at this park for 2 months in 2023 and was planing on staying for 5 months in 2025. I left after 2 months due to iron& sulfur laden well water that is provided in at least half the park. I spent hundreds of dollars trying to filter and clean up the water to no avail. It damages everything and they won't put a treatment system in at the well pump like the 2nd well has so you can filter it to an acceptable level for drinking, cooking, washing etc.

In 2023 I was in a section that was treated and my filters/softener did a acceptable job to make it work. I Used the laundry facilities also. This trip to see family in 2025 I was in a different section and by the second day it was unacceptable disgusting turbid rusty water with sulfur odor. I bought additional filters for Ferrous Iron Water treatment and remediation along with iron out chemical for cleaning fixtures and plumbing system on the camper. It barely worked well enough for a couple weeks between filter changes and rinsing the system for shower use. I Had to buy drinking water in town every few days for cooking, drinking and brushing teeth etc.

New owners bought the park in 2023 and have increased monthly rent from$750 a month to$950 a month but don't seem to care enough about the health and comfort of their guest to do anything with the well water for a majority of the park. Let alone any of the other infrastructure or"amenities" to be generous in there reference This year even the laundry machines where too disgusting to use that we had to go into town for laundry also.

The park needs major renovations to just bring it up to modern standards. The bath house is in decrepit condition moldy smelly and barely cleaned anytime I was over there. Site pads are rip rap 1" to 4" size rock with no fine rock coverings, or in some areas smoother rock and dirt but nowhere close to flat or level. Water drainage when its raining is deplorable and you very well might be in a mud pit at your doorway.

It's sad there are no decent RV parks in the Cleveland area, just old campgrounds that have added hook-ups and market themselves as RV parks and now charge like they are RV Resorts. Reserve a space at your own risk and definitely verify where and what water source you are on. Bring plenty of filters and plan on sanitizing your system after staying there.

Guide to Wickliffe

Camping sites near Wickliffe, Ohio range from lakeside experiences along Lake Erie to more secluded forest settings within a 30-mile radius. The region experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F and winter temperatures often dropping below freezing. Eastern Ohio's geography creates a mix of lakefront camping with beach access and inland wooded sites with varying terrain.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Perry Township Park features lakefront sites with easy lake access for anglers. "Beach is right next door too! Great trails, clean facilities, no complaints," notes one camper at West Branch State Park Campground.

Disc golf courses: Several campgrounds offer disc golf courses for campers looking for recreation beyond hiking. At Punderson State Park Campground, campers can enjoy "opportunities for disc golf, archery range, canoeing/kayaking/row boats, swimming (no lifeguard) and golf."

Beach activities: Multiple camping areas provide beach access for swimming and sunbathing. "The campground has a little swimming area... There's a boat launch, disc golf, trails, kayak rentals, archery range and more," according to visitors at Punderson State Park.

Nature center visits: Some parks feature educational facilities with exhibits about local wildlife and ecosystems. "The West Woods as a park is really nice with a nature center, hiking and bridle trails," mentions one camper, though they noted the campsite itself was lacking.

What campers like

Lakeside views: Many campers appreciate waterfront sites that provide scenic views. "There are many sites taken by permanent campers for the summer. There are pickleball courts in park. Right on Lake Erie, nice hot showers," reports a visitor to Perry Township Park.

Secluded sites: Several parks offer more private camping experiences away from crowds. "Would have given this site 5 stars but the walk to the site was a bit more of a haul than expected. It was just myself, kids, and pup. So it made setting up camp a bit more work but we enjoyed our stay thoroughly," comments a camper at Penitentiary Glen Reservation Campsite.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms and showers rank high on camper preferences. At West Branch State Park, campers appreciate "clean individual showers" and note that "bathrooms were clean separate showers verizon works well here."

Wildlife viewing: Many sites offer opportunities to observe local wildlife. "My friends and I decided to stay here for the weekend. Even with the colder weather it was nice and cozy. Plenty of fire wood provided and a short distance away from the gorge to walk. The second night had lots of coyotes around, which is cool but can be dangerous if not careful," reports a camper at Penitentiary Glen.

What you should know

Site terrain challenges: Many campgrounds in the region have uneven grounds that can complicate setup. "The sites greatly very on size and flatness so make sure you look at the pictures of the site before you book some are basically the parking pad and a fire ring, some are big and flat some are on a incline," advises a camper at Punderson State Park.

Seasonal availability: Most campgrounds operate from April through October, with limited winter camping options. "Stopped here on a road trip traveling East to west. Campground is in a residential type area with houses and neighborhoods nearby. Campground staff were very friendly," notes a visitor to Silver Springs Campground.

Reservation requirements: Popular sites fill quickly, especially waterfront locations. At West Branch State Park, campers recommend, "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!"

Bathroom facilities vary: Toilet and shower availability differs significantly between parks. "Vaulted toilets which were very clean and we could also use what seemed to normally be the bathrooms affiliated with sporting fields which have hot water and flush toilets," reports a Silver Springs camper.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. "This is a good campground for families. We tent camped here. The sites are pretty far apart and you feel secluded but, at the same time, the bathrooms are close by. There is a lot of hiking and things to do around the area and even a playground for the kiddos," shares a visitor to Punderson State Park.

Beach proximity: Campgrounds with beach access provide built-in entertainment for kids. At Geneva State Park Campground, "Easy to get to, not crowded, the sites were paved and spaced decently and, it had bike paths! Another bonus is that it borders Lake Erie."

Organized activities: Some parks offer structured programs for children. "There is an ice cream social held on Saturday evenings that my children always love to attend," mentions a West Branch State Park visitor.

Dog-friendly options: For families traveling with pets, several parks accommodate four-legged members. "The dog park was a bonus... we camped right next to it. Perfect! Playground, big open area and a nice pool!" notes a camper at Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Many RV sites require significant adjustment to achieve level setup. "Very few full hookups. Rest of the sites only have 15-20 amp service. The lots are not even close to level. You will need a lot of blocks to get close to level. Saw one RV with auto levelers with his tire about foot off the ground," warns a Punderson State Park visitor.

Limited hookup availability: Full service sites with water, electric, and sewer connections are limited in the region. "No time for pictures to much family time. Large beautiful park with lots of amenities. Boat ramp, disc golf, trails, kayak rentals, archery range and more," reports another Punderson visitor.

Water fill stations: Some campgrounds have challenges with water access points. At West Branch State Park, "the water fill is on an incline so when our tank was 'full' pulling away from fill station it was really only 2/3 full. This was okay for a short weekend but not good planning from who ever designed the park."
