    Wonderfully updated!

This campground has been wonderfully updated! The owners have added in an additional playground, dog park, newly paved roadways, newly redone building, a new pavilion, fire pit, and boat parking! We love camping here every chance we get! It is convenient to the turnpike and Cedar Point is just a few miles away!

    Middle Ridge/Vermilion Valley Rest Area

Hook up, dump station, quiet and immaculate rest stop ad well.

This is a test area on the Ohio Turnpike. Rv owners can self pay $20 to stay overnight. Quiet area away from the semis and common parking lot, but super close still to the plaza. The plaza offers 5 restaurants and vending machines, a gift shop, and clean restrooms. Sufficient area to exercise pets.

    Nice campground

We have stayed here twice and will definitely be back. Both times at the end of September. Nice campground, friendly staff, store is well stocked for anything you may have forgotten. The playground and jump mat for kids is awesome. They usually have some kind of activity for kids on weekends. We travel with 2 large Labrador retrievers and love being able to let them play off leash in the kamp k9 dog park. The sites are a little close together and the train is loud but other than that, it’s a wonderful place to stay. Very close to Cedar Point.

We stayed at this campground in the group camp area. The sites are tight but do provide water and 30 amp electric.

The campground offers a pond for fishing , swimming pool , bounce pad , inflatable lake fun, dog park and mini golf.

Since we were there as a group event we didn’t use any of the extras but it all looked nice and clean plus lots of fun.

Cell coverage was spotty but you could usually get some kind of signal.

The campground has a lot of seasonal sites as well as primitive tent camping and standard rv sites.

Nice Campground for a Group Event

This is our second time camping here and both times were for a group camping event. For this type of event it’s a great park. We had a whole sector the event with water and electric sites.

If we were going to camp here on our own I am not sure I would like it since it’s mostly set up for seasonal campers. So there are no hiking trail and there is also a lot of golf cart traffic.

They do offer a swimming pool , pond with inflatable slides , dog park , bound pad and miniature golf.

    Van Buren State Park Campground

    Small and peaceful

We stayed one night on our way to IN. We’ve never been here before and wanted to check it off our list. It’s a small campground with one side as equestrian and the other side not. All sites had electric and water, no full hookup. There were only drop toilets and no showers. They were clean but I don’t think I’d want to do more than a weekend there. It had a nice playground for kids and plenty of trails to hike or go horseback riding. They also had a dog park and small wildflower garden. The check in cabin had ice and wood for sale but no store. Our site was really nice. The pads were recently paved and had a huge bumper at the end. The fire ring was nice and the site had plenty of space for tents.

Guide to Vickery

Lake Erie's coastline offers diverse camping options near Vickery, Ohio with several sites designed to accommodate water recreation enthusiasts. Many campgrounds in this region sit at elevations between 570-600 feet above sea level, providing views of the lake while maintaining access to nearby attractions. Most locations experience typical Great Lakes weather patterns with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping months.

What to do

Waterfront activities: East Harbor State Park Campground provides easy access to both Lake Erie and a protected harbor. "The wild life in the area was abundant making hikes in the afternoon great especially near sunset when the deer in the area started to come out. Also watching the sun set and rise on the beach/swimming area was a great experience," notes Elijah G., who appreciated the location for both wildlife viewing and lake activities.

Island exploration: Kelleys Island State Park Campground offers a unique camping experience accessible by ferry. "The island is beautiful and we hope that you can enjoy it! P.S. Check local deals on Groupon or Lake Erie Shores and Islands websites to save a bit on your trip," suggests Rebecca F. The campground provides a base for exploring the island's glacial grooves and other natural features.

Amusement park access: Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point serves as convenient accommodations for Cedar Point visitors. "Stayed just one night on our way up to the UP. Was relatively quiet as it was midweek in May. Could get busy and sites are close together but no one was around. Some nice walking and birding trails from the site," reports Cameron H. about East Harbor State Park, which provides a quieter alternative near the popular attraction.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the cleanliness of bathhouses at several dog friendly campgrounds near Vickery. "Very nice campground, it's large so if you're walking around, remember to take a map. The campground is right on the shore of Lake Erie, there are a few restaurants nearby. The sites vary in size, lots of shade trees where we camped," writes Michi P. about East Harbor State Park.

Lake views: The opportunity to camp near water ranks high for visitors. "This small park is laid out on the grounds of the former Victory Hotel, in its heyday the largest wooden structure in the US. Tent campers can choose a site directly on the lakefront; trailers & RVs must camp in the second tier but some sites still have Lake views," explains Blythe J. about South Bass Island State Park Campground.

Convenient locations: Many pet-friendly campsites near Vickery provide strategic access to regional attractions. "We drove down from MI for a quick weekend getaway. Nice and friendly staff with plenty of things to do in the area. Bathrooms and showers were clean which is always a plus. Wifi reception was also good. Definitely a place to stay if you're fishing Lake Erie or visiting Cedar point," says Derrick J. about his stay at Crystal Rock Campground.

What you should know

Site variations: Campground layouts vary significantly throughout the region. "Site D10 was massive, had a creek running alongside of it. And was hidden behind lots of trees. Will be back," reports Brendan B. about East Harbor State Park, highlighting the diversity of sites even within a single campground.

Island logistics: When camping on islands, transportation planning becomes essential. "Access is via ferry. If you chose to leave your car on the mainland (free parking there) & pack in there are multiple sources for golf cart & bike rentals. For a quiet visit camp Monday thru Thursday; if you like crowds & parties reserve weekend time in advance," advises Blythe J. about South Bass Island.

Weather preparedness: Cedarlane RV Resort visitor Ashley R. notes the need for weather awareness: "Due to covid our family decided to go to Lake Erie instead of the ocean this year. This was our first trip up. We got there on a Saturday and it was very busy but Sunday morning most of the campers started to head out." Be prepared for fluctuating crowds and weather conditions that can change quickly along Lake Erie.

Tips for camping with families

Pool options: Family-friendly amenities vary by location. "This campground has a little bit of everything. Rv parking, tent sites and several cabins to rent. Rates are decent. Has lots of stuff for kids to do. Pools are small and can be a little crowded during the summer on weekends. They have a great splash pad and wading pool for kids," notes Jeffrey C. about Cedarlane RV Resort.

Playground access: Several pet-accommodating campgrounds feature recreational areas for children. "Super nice people - small sites - bathroom/shower cleaned - a interesting area by Lakeside which is an 1800s art with very nice restaurants and shops most closed after Labor Day," observes Ray K. about Crystal Rock Campground, highlighting seasonal variations in nearby attractions.

Beach conditions: Tall Timbers Campground offers water recreation suitable for families. "We really enjoy this campground and it is 20 min from home so that is always a plus. Nice and clean pond and beach very clean. I used my camper shower and restroom so never used theirs," shares Dawn S. Check beach conditions before planning water activities, as algae blooms can affect swimming access.

Tips from RVers

Hookup quality: "Perfect for our visit to Cedar Point. We got there late at 9:00 pm and didn't have to check out until 8:00 pm the next day so our RV stayed plugged in all day. The campground stay also included early entry passes into the park at 8:45 AM before the opening for regular entry at 10:00 am," notes Elise A. about Lighthouse Point, highlighting the value of full hookup sites with flexible check-out times.

Site leveling: "No sewer hook up. Level sites. Sites pretty close to each other so only 1 car per site. Nice little swimming area with floatables for kids and sandy beach. Fire rings right outside your door. Friendly staff," describes Linda R. about Tall Timbers Campground, emphasizing the importance of assessing site configurations for RV setups.

Reservation timing: "Clean site, adequately spaced sites and clean and well stocked facilities! I'd absolutely recommend! With the amount of bars, restaurants and site seeing available on the island, it's definitely good for a 3-4 day camping trip!!" advises Nick T. about South Bass Island State Park Campground. Book early for prime spots, especially during peak summer months or holiday weekends.
