    Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins

    Family Friendly

Great campground with lots to do! RV sites are a little small and close together, but comes with a picnic table and fire pit. There are back in and pull through RV spots - along with nice shady spots for rent camping. Cabins are also available. Great spot to camp if interested in tubing/canoeing/kayaking down Mohican river. When you arrive everyone in the vehicle checks in, and then someone on a golf cart takes you to your spot. Campground has an indoor pool and hot tub. Also has pond with paddle boards and paddle boats that need to be reserved at additional cost. Quite a few playgrounds available and mountain bike trails. Small creek runs along the campground. All guests are given a wrist band that gives you a discount at the Trails End restaurant and at Mohican Adventures across the street.

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Winter Time But No Snow

We stayed on a full hook up site (turned off for the season) that had a nice concrete level pad. There was also a nice side pad that kept our chairs clean. A little further back in the campground to be close to the shower house that was open. Then found out that comfort station next to us was open - nice! Also close the water which was full and rushing all weekend.

The camp store was open on the weekend and the staff was nice to chat with. They had wood, but it was slab cut which doesn’t burn very well. We decided against it. Lots of snacks and other items still available.

Some sites were really close to the water, almost too close as the water flooded a few spots. The campground is nice to walk if you like to get in a little workout. They also have small camper cabins and them much bigger cabins which a few are pet friendly.

We went on a hike by the covered bridge to one of the waterfalls. Lots of trials to choose from.

    Cardinal Center Campground

    First camping trip 2020

This was our first camping trip after purchasing a new to us fifth wheel camper. We chose the Cardinal Camping Center because it was only 15 miles from our home. We arrived on Thursday afternoon registered and set up at our site. Staff was very friendly and helpful, we shared some fresh veggies from our garden as we had way too much for just us and asked the welcome center to tell people to help themselves to what ever they wanted. we then toured the campgroundand found the stocked fishing lake (catch and release) the indoor swimming pool. The camp also has some very nice cabins, no restrooms in the cabin but they are very close to the public restrooms and shower house. We then went over to the shooting center and tried our luck with some silliolet and metal targets on the pistol range. Thy also have trap and skeet available.

Our site had ful hook-ups 50 amp service with sewer and water picnic table and fire ring for $44 a night. All of the people next to us were very nice and everyone respected each other's sites.

I would go back to this campground again, we even extended our stay an extra day because we had such a good time.

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Unexpected Treat in Central Ohio

As part of a nearly 200-mile bikepacking ride, this was our last stop! We spent 2 nights in their "Class B" area down in the Mohican River Valley and loved it.

The oddly named “Class A” camping area offers everything from full-hook up camping slots for campers large and small, as well as just electric sites and 10 “walk-in” primitive sites, and cabins -- all of which are reservable. This area has all the bells and whistles of a modern campground with an environmental learning center, a nice outdoor pool, clean showers and bathrooms, an extensive playground and hiking and mountain biking trails right out the front door.

The “Class B” area offers 25 primitive sites on a first-come, first-served basis. It is almost 6 miles by road from the “A” services, but only a 2-mile flatish hike along the river trail. At these sites, there are only pit toilets and a water pump. Each site has a picnic table and a small fire ring. There is also a large group camping area just a few miles away from the primitive “Class B” area.

Tubing and canoeing are available within the park, but there are also several canoe outfitters in the area which provide rental / pick up services. The sheer number of these businesses makes me think that summer time can be crowded!!

Beautiful shaded trails meander all throughout the park and they boast some of the most challenging mountain biking in the mid-west, so read your trail maps. Hiking, equestrian and winter snowmobile trails also offer some great opportunities to get out and stretch your legs throughout the year. There is also a safe and convenient, bike lane / bike path into nearby Loudonville, which has a small grocery story and the usual fast-food restaurants.

Note: The only reason why this park didn't get a 5 star was due to their customer service. It was absolutely lousy, confusing, and the young folks working behind the counter acted as if they didn't want to be there and/or hadn't been trained. We almost left, but since we had cycled 42 miles to get there that day, we chose to stay and enjoyed our time in their Class B sites.

    Salt Fork State Park Campground

    My Go-to Weekend Getaway

Saltfork is located about 45 minutes from my house, and makes for the perfect overnight trip.

There are tons of things to do, and lots of space in which to do them. My favorites includes hiking trails, and the lakeside dog park.

I stay in the primitive camping, it allows for more privacy and quiet. Although it also means you are relegated to the pit toilets. I personally don't mind them, but I know some campers will make the drive to the nicer shower house in the RV heavy side of the park.

Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, the fire rings in the primitive section need some work, as the grates are very old and small.

    Malabar Farm State Park Campground

    Rustic

I found Malabar Farm in Lucas, OH on my way home from Mom’s house. Never heard of it before and I have been this way for over 20 years now. Louis Bromfield was a conservationist and among many other things (including winning a Pulitzer) he was in the forefront of organic and self-sustaining gardening. This place is amazing! ( and would be an excellent home schoolers camping trip!) Not your typical going hiking kinda campground (there are trails but they are not “major”) you come here to step away from city life and tour a working farm. Ohio countryside at its best. Primitive camping with a gravel parking pad and water, fire ring, picnic table and hitching post. No reservations, this is a first come campground. There’s also a small rentable cabin open year round. Definitely worth a visit and very family oriented events. ( your teenager will roll their eyes at you but probably secretly enjoy the visit)

    Mohican State Park Campground

    Great park

This is a great state park campground. We stayed at an electric site. The spots are decent sized, plenty of restrooms, pool, playground and camp store that sells ice cream! Tubing down the creek next to the campground was super cool too. Cabins looked very nice and secluded. We hiked to the swinging bridge which was newly dedicated (May 2021).

    Atwood Lake Park Campground

    Incredible!

The Atwood Lake Campground is a true gem in a beautiful area of eastern Ohio! We’ve visited the Atwood region many times in the past but have never camped - but after this visit we’ll be back for sure. The campground is relatively new, with the campground area being completely revamped beginning in 2017. There are two overnight camping areas with seasonal sites in a separate section; we stayed in “Camp H” which is the newest area. There is a huge bathhouse with two sets of men’s and women’s restrooms and shower facilities along with a very nice laundry area. Adjoining the bathhouse area is a beautiful pavilion and children’s playground - all of which overlooks Atwood Lake. The campsites are nicely spaced though if you’re in the inner loop as we were or even some of the outer ring sites you’ll be looking right into your neighbor’s site. All sites are FHU on level concrete pads and include a metal picnic table and fire ring. If needed there are two very well equipped dump stations if you prefer to use them instead of the sewer connection at your site. Many sites are on cul de sacs directly on the lake with docks and fishing areas adjacent to the campsites. Lots of hiking trails, paved bike paths, a swimming beach and restaurant are in a nearby area. We loved the campground and will return soon!

    Cleveland/ Sudusky Jellystone Park

    Kids Paradise

Large campground with a nice mix of seasonal and overnighters. Clean common areas. Nice pool, camp store on site with a nice selection of camp gear. Snack bar with pizza, ice cream etc. Tons of planned activities for the kids. Movie nights, wibits (inflatable obstacle course on the pond), stocked pond, kayaks, Gaga Ball, RC track, jump pad, climbing wall etc etc etc!!

This is a yearly trip for us! Never disappoints.

Guide to Shreve

Cabin accommodations near Shreve, Ohio range from rustic primitive structures to modern units with full amenities. The Mohican region lies within the Appalachian foothills with elevations between 900-1200 feet, creating varied terrain for multiple outdoor activities. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing, while summer brings hot, humid conditions that make water activities popular at cabins near lakes and rivers.

What to do

Fishing and water sports: Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground offers excellent fishing access with boat rentals available at the marina. "Big campground. Boat docking is available. I just love love the beach lake," notes one visitor to Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground. The lake supports multiple water activities including tubing and kayaking.

Hiking and exploring: Multiple trail systems connect throughout the region's parks. "Lots of hiking trails and waterfalls. Free hike-in camping available here too," explains a visitor at Mohican State Park Campground. Trails range from easy walking paths to more challenging routes through Hemlock Gorge.

Family activities: Whispering Hills Campground offers structured activities throughout the day. "Amazing staff, soooo much for kids and adults to do, nice pool, kids activity schedule 9-9 almost daily," shares a camper at Whispering Hills. Many cabins serve as convenient base camps for families wanting to explore multiple parks and attractions in a single visit.

What campers like

Riverfront locations: Cabins along the Mohican River provide direct water access and peaceful settings. "Beautiful campsites on the water and near it. Playgrounds, cabins, camper cabins, tent sites & camper sites," reports a visitor at Mohican State Park Campground. These riverside cabins remain popular for weekend escapes.

Large sites: Many cabin areas provide ample outdoor space. "The sites are spacious and with the option to park your trailer where you want (grass sites)," notes a camper at Mohican Wilderness. The extra space allows for outdoor dining and activities right at your cabin.

Year-round options: Some cabins remain available during winter months. "Another Thanksgiving spent in our camper and it was so nice and relaxing. There were more campers than expected this weekend," explains a winter visitor to Mohican State Park. Winter cabin stays offer a different experience with less crowding and seasonal activities.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabins require significant advance booking, especially for summer weekends. "We called last minute and it was on a first come, we hit the road quick," shares a camper at Pleasant Hill Lake Park who was lucky to find availability.

Amenities vary widely: Basic cabins have minimal facilities while deluxe options include full bathrooms and kitchens. At Toodik Family Campground Cabin & Canoeing, "The store appears to be well equipped with everything from ice to s'mores fixings. Though again off-season means fewer things available."

Access considerations: Some cabin areas have challenging terrain. "Getting here proved to be tricky, as it seems all of the GPS apps and my Garmin routed us on a county road that is not fit for RVs of any type," warns a visitor to Wally World. GPS directions often route vehicles on unsuitable roads, so calling ahead for specific directions is recommended.

Tips for camping with families

Indoor options during rain: Look for cabins with indoor recreation areas for weather backup plans. "The indoor pool and shower houses were amazing," reports a camper at Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins. Indoor facilities become particularly important during spring and fall when weather can be unpredictable.

Bike-friendly areas: Several cabin areas have dedicated biking areas for children. "The bike/walking paths for kids/adults is a great addition for campers with young kids," notes a family at Pleasant Hill Lake Park. These paths allow children to explore safely away from vehicle traffic.

Swimming options: Cabin locations have different swimming facilities. "We tent camped and had a private spot in the woods which we loved. We fished and swam in the indoor pool which was not heated at the time," explains a visitor to Mohican Adventures Campground. Swimming options range from natural lake beaches to chlorinated pools.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: When booking cabins, research specific site locations carefully. "RV sites are a little small and close together, but comes with a picnic table and fire pit. There are back in and pull through RV spots - along with nice shady spots for tent camping," advises an RVer at Mohican Adventures Campground.

Utility considerations: Cabin electrical systems vary significantly. "Our site was a normal GFI outlet and couldn't run A/C and air fryer, no biggie we did wings over a fire. I'd have a filter for water also," suggests a visitor at Lake Wapusun RV Resort. Even deluxe cabins may have limited electrical capacity.

Access to services: Cabin locations provide different levels of convenience to nearby towns. "The campground is about 10 mins from Loudonville, and it's a nice little town with a couple of good places to eat. If you need groceries, the IGA is a great place to go," notes a visitor to Wally World regarding supply options.
