    Punderson State Park Campground

    Solo tent camping went well

I had originally gotten lot #81 but quickly got it switched to #83 because it was just waaaay better. Flatter ground and I was able to go deeper into the woods.

I went the first week of October, and on weekdays, which was great because I had no neighbors.

Staff was great, check in area also has a little store with all the essentials stocked up, lots of trails, great for biking and hiking, a park for the kids, fishing, canoeing, showers, flush toilets, all that fancy stuff was there.

Only down side was occasional road noise which I just can't seem to escape in my area of Ohio. And I personally wouldn't go here on weekends or over the summer because there are RV sites everywhere, which is another thing that dominates my area of Ohio.

Going again, as long as I don't have the kids, I would try for a test space as far from the road and is deep in the forest as possible. Do that at tge right time of year and I think this will be a great spot for me in the future

    Woodside Lake Park

    Nice quiet camping

Quiet tent campsite parked in this area. There are quite a few RVs parked here and it appears lively, but the tent area in hilltop was quiet and secluded. Very kid friendly. At night, there was highway noise in the background. A lot to do here but also very close to Cuyahoago Valley National Park.

Canal Fulton Canoe Livery & Campground

    Great location, laking facilities

The campground runs along 100 yards or so of the tuscarawas River. Sandwiches by a railroad, and walking path. They allow you to drive to your spot to pack/unpack, but have to park in the lot. While the campsites are scenic and what you expect... the washroom, especially the shower are pretty lacking. There's a nice covered picnic area with grills available with your own gas. And a small (toddler) kids area. All in all, a great cheap spot for a quick stay.

We stayed mid September and there was live music walking distance every night, a cute ice cream shop a short walk over the bridge, and a nice playground on the other side of the river that was also an easy walk.

I didnt partake in the canoes... but they do a river clean up monthly and really seem to enjoy what they do.

All in all a great cheap spot for a quick stay.

    Bear Run Campground

    Options.

This is an amazing campground with reasonable prices, an array of camping options to suit different camping needs as well as budget range. I am unsure if I just happen to have gotten lucky and decided to go camping during a special weekend, but it’s Labor Day weekend and I am loving that there is a calendar of events for campers to participate in if they choose to. Activities include wagon rides to the lake, talent show, karaoke…etc, as well as church! This was an unexpected gem as we are from Florida and were blessed enough to stumble upon the right person in a parking lot when my husband asked if they knew of any places that we could possibly camp at nearby and that gentleman told us about Moraine Park. Upon making our way out to here, we found Bear Run and have loved our experience so far. Love it!

    Streetsboro-Cleveland SE KOA

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

    Woodside Lake Park

Old Park With Iron Laden Well Water Beware

I stayed at this park for 2 months in 2023 and was planing on staying for 5 months in 2025. I left after 2 months due to iron& sulfur laden well water that is provided in at least half the park. I spent hundreds of dollars trying to filter and clean up the water to no avail. It damages everything and they won't put a treatment system in at the well pump like the 2nd well has so you can filter it to an acceptable level for drinking, cooking, washing etc.

In 2023 I was in a section that was treated and my filters/softener did a acceptable job to make it work. I Used the laundry facilities also. This trip to see family in 2025 I was in a different section and by the second day it was unacceptable disgusting turbid rusty water with sulfur odor. I bought additional filters for Ferrous Iron Water treatment and remediation along with iron out chemical for cleaning fixtures and plumbing system on the camper. It barely worked well enough for a couple weeks between filter changes and rinsing the system for shower use. I Had to buy drinking water in town every few days for cooking, drinking and brushing teeth etc.

New owners bought the park in 2023 and have increased monthly rent from$750 a month to$950 a month but don't seem to care enough about the health and comfort of their guest to do anything with the well water for a majority of the park. Let alone any of the other infrastructure or"amenities" to be generous in there reference This year even the laundry machines where too disgusting to use that we had to go into town for laundry also.

The park needs major renovations to just bring it up to modern standards. The bath house is in decrepit condition moldy smelly and barely cleaned anytime I was over there. Site pads are rip rap 1" to 4" size rock with no fine rock coverings, or in some areas smoother rock and dirt but nowhere close to flat or level. Water drainage when its raining is deplorable and you very well might be in a mud pit at your doorway.

It's sad there are no decent RV parks in the Cleveland area, just old campgrounds that have added hook-ups and market themselves as RV parks and now charge like they are RV Resorts. Reserve a space at your own risk and definitely verify where and what water source you are on. Bring plenty of filters and plan on sanitizing your system after staying there.

Guide to Boardman

Campgrounds near Boardman, Ohio offer distinctive accommodations beyond the region's established facilities. Most camping opportunities are located within a 45-minute drive from Boardman's urban center, situated between Youngstown and the Pennsylvania border. Winter access remains possible at select locations like West Branch State Park, though campers should check specific road conditions as smaller access routes may become challenging during snowfall.

What to do

Kayaking and water activities: At Mill Creek Camping, visitors have access to Berlin Lake with multiple water entry points. "Very nice park with a lot of spacious spots. Scout camping, boat launch, primitive camping and more," notes one camper. Sites with water access provide convenience for boaters who want to keep their vessels nearby.

Dog-friendly amenities: West Branch State Park Campground offers dedicated dog facilities that enhance pet camping experiences. A visitor observed, "Dog park is pretty great, too! Good spot to camp for Cuyahoga Falls National Park." The park's trail system accommodates hikers with pets on many routes.

Historical exploration: Beaver Creek State Park provides access to a pioneer village with original structures. According to a camper, "The best part about the area was the history that surrounds it. There is a pioneer village near the park office that offers some picnicking areas around it. It also has original buildings from the pioneer days (church, school, etc)." The North Country National Scenic Trail also passes through the park.

What campers like

Private wooded sites: Many campsites in the region offer substantial tree coverage for privacy. At Pioneer Trails Tree Farm Campground, the camping experience occurs within a working tree farm, creating a distinctive environment. A reviewer mentioned, "Camping in a tree farm has been cool! Clean bathroom. Office to charge electronics and a campsite with firepit was great."

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness receives consistent praise across multiple campgrounds. One camper at Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground stated, "The owners have a desire to keep prices steady" while maintaining clean facilities. Another camper highlighted West Branch's "clean individual showers" and mentioned "best bathrooms around! Showers great."

Spacious waterfront options: Waterfront sites are particularly valued at Shenango Campground in nearby Pennsylvania. A visitor reported, "We had site #9 which had electric hook up and you fill with water...Our site was waterfront which had a nice view." The sites provide scenic views though some have steep slopes to the water.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Many sites require advance bookings, especially for premium locations. A West Branch camper advised, "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" Popular campgrounds fill completely during summer weekends and holiday periods.

Site leveling considerations: Uneven terrain affects some campgrounds. A West Branch State Park visitor noted, "First time at this park I can see why it's always booked up. It seems like the sites are good sized but some are on slopes even the pads so make sure to bring stuff to level." At Mosquito Lake State Park, a camper similarly mentioned, "Only negatives I have are some of lots are pretty uneven."

Seasonal limitations: Most campgrounds operate May through October, though availability varies. At KOA Lake Milton Berlin Lake, reviewers note the best weather typically occurs between late May and mid-September. A camper shared, "The campground was clean, the bathrooms were updated and also extremely clean. The campground had so many amenities its hard to name them all!"

Tips for camping with families

Water attractions: Family-oriented campgrounds often feature swimming areas. At KOA Lake Milton Berlin Lake, a visitor reported, "Kids absolutely loved swimming in the little lake and sliding/jumping off the inflatables." Mill Creek Camping also provides swimming opportunities with "many access point to the lake."

Playground access: Several campgrounds maintain dedicated play areas. A Mosquito Lake State Park visitor mentioned, "Beach was great and there is an epic playground for kids. If your kids are 8 and under they'll love the nature playground and nets provided to catch critters."

Weekend activities: Organized events occur at many campgrounds, particularly on weekends. West Branch State Park offers ice cream socials on Saturdays that children "always love to attend," according to one regular visitor. Others mentioned movie nights at various parks throughout summer months.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Level sites with good hookups require planning. An RVer at Chestnut Ridge noted, "They keep up on the gravel and leveling which is always appreciated." For larger rigs, a Shenango visitor advised choosing sites in the main Golden loop for better access.

Utility limitations: Water access varies significantly between campgrounds. At Beaver Creek State Park, an RVer reported, "They are on a well so there is limited water and they don't allow you to fill up your on board tank. Make sure you fill up before you go!" At Shenango, campers mentioned the need to fill at designated locations before proceeding to sites.

Road considerations: Access roads present challenges at some locations. At Beaver Creek, a reviewer warned, "There is a road in the park (Echo Dell Road) that RV's/Trailers can't go on so make sure you approach this campground from Leslie Road!" Similarly at Shenango, "The road going into the duck loops aren't as nice as the rest of the campground roads."
