    Lake Norman State Park Campground

Unexpected Stop, Perfect Stay at Lake Norman State Park

We pulled into Lake Norman State Park around 6 PM on New Year’s Eve, mainly because we didn’t want to drive a couple more hours to our original destination. We only planned to stay one night, but the campground surprised us—in the best way—and we ended up staying three nights instead.

There were plenty of available campsites, and every site we saw was at least decently spaced, with several feeling nicely secluded. The campground was quiet and well laid out. The bathhouse was clean and modern, and having water spigots available in the no-hookups loop was a big plus.

One of the highlights was riding our e-bikes on the Hawk, Hicks, Norwood Creek, and Monbo loops. These are the easier sections of the Itusi Trail system and were a lot of fun—though still a bit too unpaved for my wife’s taste😄. Even so, the hiking trail access from the campground made it easy to get out and explore.

This stop wasn’t planned at all, but it turned into one of those stays that makes you glad plans changed. We’ll definitely be coming back to Lake Norman State Park.

Double Shoals Campground — New River Trail State Park

    Camping on the River

You can only access Doubles Shoals Campground from the New River Trail of from the New River in a Kayak.  It is a great place to camp if you are traveling the trail or river.   The two sites include picnic tables, fire ring with grill, benches and a pit toilet.

Raven Cliff Campground — George Washington & Jefferson National Forest

Primitive camping, park by campsite. Truly accessible. Plenty of trails and peace and quit between traffic. Alot of locals use this spot to fish and hunt bear. Be due diligent while staying. But truly a peaceful resting stay!

We stayed a week. Truly peaceful. There's alot of traffic from locals and wellness checks by law enforcement. Your truly looked after! Other than the bear hunting that went on, was scary..this is a peaceful spot to reset with plenty of hiking trails right next to the creek.

    Dan Nicholas Park

    Beautiful place

This is a nice campground. Water issues in the ladies bathroom and spotty/weak Wi-Fi. Most amenities were closed due to short staffing. They are planning to refurbish a lot and staff more in the new year. When that happens this place will be a strong 5 stars!

    Cedar Rock Campground

    Great spot!

Very clean and taken care of. Owners are friendly and check in daily. The creek is very nice and creates the perfect amount of ambient noise. I found ample amount of space between spots. We had all the space we needed and some. We have an 8person tent. We will definitely be coming back.

    Fancy Gap-Blue Ridge Parkway KOA

    Camping in Quiet

This is our second time here. It's pretty quiet here. There is a heated pool (closed), corn hole, playground, and multiple games. We noticed there's no kids during this time of the year. The KOA station has some cute gifts. 24 hrs. Restrooms, laundry area, and great outdoor. The cabins have there very own toilet, tv, full size bed, and bunk beds. Very nice KOA.
