Dispersed camping near Balsam Grove provides access to mountainous terrain ranging from 2,500-5,000 feet elevation within the Pisgah National Forest. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing at night, while summer days average 75-85°F with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Most forest service roads leading to dispersed sites require vehicles with decent clearance, though not necessarily 4WD.
What to do
Trail hiking at waterfalls: At Gorges State Park Campground, follow the Rainbow Falls Trail for a challenging 4-mile round trip hike. "The hikes to the waterfalls are easily accessible and totally worth it," notes Todd S., who appreciated the peaceful forest setting.
Mountain biking from camp: The Art Loeb trail starts near Davidson River Campground, offering extensive riding options. "Located right inside Pisgah National forest this campground is perfectly set for all adventures... if you're thinking of riding the mtb trails you're in luck. They start literally across the davidson river from the campground," shares Travis S.
Fly fishing: North Mills River provides excellent trout fishing access right from your site. "We've enjoyed this campground mainly for the fly-fishing. The local Trout Unlimited group has also spent many hours upgrading the walkways and fence lines to protect the river," reports Shannon K.
What campers like
Riverside tent camping: Lazy J Campground offers tent sites directly along the North Fork French Broad River. "We did a spontaneous trip to the mountains and we found this nice camp site along the North Fork French Broad River and we camped right along the river. It felt like we were camping deep in the woods," writes Ricky J., adding that they could fish right next to their campsite.
Privacy between sites: The wooded setting at Black Forest Family Camping Resort creates natural separation. "Sites are wooded and spaced far enough apart that you barely see or hear neighbors," notes Chris Y., who appreciated the family-friendly amenities despite being away from town.
Winter camping options: Some area campgrounds remain open year-round with reduced rates. "After November 1st the prices get cut in half, so I stayed for $11," reports Jonathan N. about North Mills River, adding that the bathrooms remained open despite being unheated during his November stay.
What you should know
Campsite availability: Popular campgrounds fill quickly during peak seasons. "This area has become over run with tourists and the 'free' campsites have mostly been comandeered by squatters who rotate from site to site every 14 days," warns Anna R. about the Pisgah Forest area, recommending advance reservations.
Water access conditions: Some campgrounds provide direct water access for recreation. "Tube down the water and exit directly at their site," describes Tracy S. of Lazy J Campground, adding, "Three Falls waterfall is just up the road. You can get tubes at the office."
Bear safety requirements: All campgrounds enforce proper food storage protocols. "There is a steel box to secure food and wood," mentions Jodie K. about Mount Pisgah Campground, while Jonathan N. notes that each North Mills River site comes with a "bear box" for secure storage.
Tips for camping with families
Swimming options: Lake Powhatan — National Forests In North Carolina offers a swimming beach close to Asheville. "The park has a great beach and lots of hiking and mountain bike trails," reports Phil L., who appreciated having these amenities while remaining only 15 minutes from downtown.
Farm animals at camp: Kids enjoy the animals at some local campgrounds. "Chickens and horses on site. Playground and lots of fun," shares Tracy S. about Lazy J Campground, one of the more dog friendly campgrounds near Balsam Grove.
Weather planning: Prepare for rapid weather changes, especially in higher elevations. "We came into this campground during a very bad storm, actually hurricane. Our stay was cold, very windy and wet!" reports Jodie K., who cut their Mount Pisgah trip short due to the conditions.
Tips from RVers
Limited hookup availability: Only certain campgrounds offer full utility connections. "We were the only campers there. It was very quiet. The stream ran right by the campsite so listening to the stream as we went to bed was wonderful," shares Julie T. about North Mills River, where some sites offer electric but not full hookups.
Road conditions: Some campgrounds require navigating steep mountain roads. "This campground would've gotten five stars except for the road getting there was pretty exciting... the last 2 miles into the campground had I would guess a couple of 10% grades both up and down," warns Lisa M. about Pisgah National Forest Davidson River Campground.
Generator restrictions: Many pet-friendly campgrounds near Balsam Grove limit generator usage hours. "Generator hours are very limited. If you are traveling during warmer months or must have AC, this is not the site for you," notes ANGELA, though she added that "tree coverage really provided us protection from the heat" during their August stay at Davidson River.
