Camping in the Hudson Valley region near North Salem offers accessibility to several state parks and facilities within an hour's drive. The area is characterized by rolling hills with elevations from 200-1,000 feet and receives about 46 inches of precipitation annually. Trail systems connect multiple camping areas, making it possible to hike between sites in some locations.
What to do
Hiking to Doodle Town ruins: Explore the remains of a historic settlement from the Revolutionary era at Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park. "The trails in the area are friendly to hikers, bikers, and the non arthritic kneers, as most are rated moderate to challenging. Don't fret, trails that are rated easy and accessible to disabled are equally enjoyable and beautiful. They offer stunning views of the changing foliage, quick glances at the Hudson River and the rolling hills of the area."
Fishing at multiple lakes: Cast a line at Clarence Fahnestock State Park Campground where campers report good catches. "There is another lake and two ponds that our neighbor campers said were great for catching panfish - one fisherman said he had caught several bass weighing over 3 pounds!!"
Apple and pumpkin picking: Visit local orchards near camping areas during fall months. "We make a habit of going during the end-of-summer/fall when you can watch the leaves change along the hiking trails, go apple and pumpkin picking near the campsites, and eat some scrumptious apple cinnamon doughnuts and drink pumpkin hot chocolate."
What campers like
Spacious shelter sites: The lean-to shelters at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation provide unique accommodation options. "The shelter sites are large and private with access to hiking trails and make for a unique experience. The staff is friendly as well."
Platform tent sites: Some campgrounds feature raised platforms that elevate your tent off the ground. "The biggest positive about Beaver Pond is how spread out it was. You definitely feel like you have your own space and are not camping on top of your neighbor. Many of the camping options were on platforms which is especially nice if it recently rained or if you are expecting rain during your stay."
Communal facilities: Convenient access to washing stations makes cleanup easier. "I also particularly enjoyed the communal sink which made it very convenient and easy to wash dishes and fill up water."
What you should know
Campground reservations vary: Some parks require in-person booking while others allow phone reservations. At Croton Point Park, "The reservation process is a bit wonky. You need to call (no online reservations) and then wait for an e-mail, but the e-mail does not tell you your assigned site; you have to wait until you check in to find out your site."
Train access possible: Public transportation can get you near some camping facilities. "When you are camping with a large group of friends and don't all have access to a car, this is the perfect spot. MetroNorth takes you right into Cold Spring, a charming, quaint town with antique shops and beautiful views of the Hudson. From there, it is a short drive to the campgrounds at Fahnestock."
Wildlife encounters: Be prepared for local animals visiting your campsite. "The wildlife do roam around your campsite so be mindful of putting food and garbage away before sleeping."
Tips for camping with families
Choose kid-friendly parks: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Gardiner offers numerous activities for children. "Nice pool that is shallow so you can relax and let the little ones go in the water park section alone or they have a 3 ft pool also. My older kids preferred a deeper pool but they still had a great time there they have lasertag which they enjoy. And a bounce pillow."
Look for playgrounds: Some parks feature play areas within sight of campsites. "Peaceful and gorgeous campsite, with plenty of space between sites. Great view of the Hudson, and playground within sight of our camper."
Find dog friendly campgrounds near North Salem: Many parks welcome pets, making them perfect for family trips with four-legged members. "This must be one of the most breathtaking camp grounds (family friendly) right on the Hudson with beach and trails. Tent sites are very private with some dirt roads to exit out but thats what make it unique experience!"
