Hither Hills State Park Campground permits pets at its oceanfront sites spanning the dunes near Montauk. The main campground offers tent and RV spaces with picnic tables and fire rings where dogs are welcome, and Theodore Roosevelt County Park provides similar pet-friendly accommodations with beach access for surf casting with furry companions. Visitors use The Dyrt to find real feedback on camping near Montauk, New York. Both parks maintain clean bathroom facilities with hot showers and require pets to remain leashed outside vehicles. Several sites along the J section at Hither Hills provide stunning ocean views where campers regularly spot whales breaching offshore while their dogs rest at camp. Cedar Point County Park also welcomes pets, though campers report significant tick activity during June visits, suggesting preventative treatment for dogs.

Walking trails connect most Montauk area campgrounds to nearby beaches where pets can enjoy the shoreline during non-peak hours. Campers should pack extra water for dogs, as drinking water access varies between campgrounds – Hither Hills lacks potable water hookups while Cedar Point offers water access points throughout the grounds. The proximity to town allows for quick trips to restock pet supplies, with most sites situated within 3 miles of Montauk's center. Generator hours are strictly limited at most campgrounds, providing quiet time for noise-sensitive pets. Summer reservations for pet-friendly sites fill extremely quickly, with some campers reporting that bookings must be made nearly a year in advance for prime summer weekends. Morning and evening beach walks with dogs offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities and comfortable temperatures during summer months.

      Waters Edge Family Campground

      Incredible campground

Most amazing weekend with tons of woods (privacy is huge for us). Very friendly guests and staff! Amazing weekend with lots of fun for the kids and even the dogs! We’ve been to campgrounds with playgrounds worse than the waters edge dog park. Every one of us had a great time with the perfect campsite deep in the woods (still able to park my 26’ camper trailer). Swimming pool, great playground, among lots of trails and wooded area surrounding almost every site. Best camping weekends we’ve ever had have been at Waters Edge.

      Fort Getty Campground

      Tent campers

Perfect location for a summer / beach camp. Mostly for RVs but tent site #6 was great. Views of the ocean to wake up too and tucked away from main area.

Worst part is you can’t bring your car on the site. Do not understand this, especially since it was over 95° and we have dogs that need AC, one if which is 14. We did sneak the car up by asking an RV camper to use his land because they block off the entrance with giant tree trunks.

More good stuff, the private pet friendly beaches were great! Small but perfect to relax. No problems with the pets at all and old but clean bathrooms.

      Ashaway RV Resort

      Rude Staff

Standard crabgrass parking lot with drunks driving around on golf carts and RV's stacked on top of each other. The woman who runs the office is a very angry person and it made the entire visit unpleasant, which is no surprise as she has been hostile and unwelcoming the several times I've visited. Pool looks nice though I guess, I've never dared to use it for fear of breaking one of the many unwritten and unspoken rules. A great place for people who enjoy eating dinner next to your neighbor's septic pipe. I called to ask if they allowed dogs and was told "NO" just to arrive and be asked to park next to the dog park.

      Whispering Pines Campground

      Great family campground

We stayed for 3 nights, the sites and camp were very clean and well maintained. Everyone was very friendly, lots of things to do - pool, bocce, volleyball, horseshoes, arcade, a small field to play frisbee or ball, mini-golf (mini-golf landscape needs to be refreshed a bit) there is even a very small fenced in dog park which was nice if you want to let your dog off leash to play. We did not experience any screaming kids all night.

      Totoket Valley RV Park

      Perfect for a stop over

Small campground with good electrical, clean water, sewer and a friendly owner. Each site has grass and a picnic table. There is a wonderful little frozen custard shop down the road called roses farm stand. It’s a perfect campground for seeing the local area or even catching the train to New York City.

    Guide to Montauk

Montauk camping areas sit at the easternmost point of Long Island, where the Atlantic Ocean and Block Island Sound meet. The region maintains average summer temperatures between 68-80°F with coastal breezes moderating the heat. Most campgrounds in this area open from May through October, with limited availability during peak summer months when temperatures reach their highest.

    What to do

Surf casting opportunities: Theodore Roosevelt County Park provides direct shore access for fishing enthusiasts. "Boondocking at its best! On the shore of the beautiful Block Island Sound...Bring your poles for surf casting," notes Diana F., highlighting the prime shoreline location.

Beach hiking trails: Rocky Neck State Park Campground connects campers with coastal exploration options. "Hiking trails along the coast line. Beautiful state park," writes Timothy R. The park offers maintained pathways suitable for all skill levels between camping areas and beach access points.

Lighthouse exploration: Cedar Point County Park provides access to a historic lighthouse via a trail system. "Really great and surprisingly long hike to the old lighthouse with lots of area for playing games and swimming," shares Maggie K. The lighthouse trail serves as both recreation and historical interest for campers staying at Cedar Point.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Niantic KOA maintains well-serviced bathroom and shower areas. "The facilities were kept tidy including the baths and showers. I was pleasantly surprised," states Nita D. The camp store and community areas receive similar attention from staff.

Beach proximity: Hammonasset State Park Campground offers quick access to multiple water areas. "The beach is a short walk away from the camping site," explains Bianca M. Campers appreciate the convenient shore access without needing transportation.

Family-focused activities: Burlingame State Park includes numerous recreational options beyond beach activities. "Good for families or couples," mentions Rebecca D., with the campground featuring a lake, game room, fishing opportunities and scheduled activities for children throughout summer months.

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Hither Hills State Park Campground requires early booking, especially during summer. "Great place to camp, need to reserve about 1 year in advance when i went to reserve it," advises Lou R. The most popular sites often fill within hours of reservation windows opening.

Seasonal tick concerns: Cedar Point County Park requires pest prevention measures during warmer months. "Twice though in June we had tons of ticks but overall is a good site!" warns Mayra D. Campers should bring proper insect repellent and conduct regular tick checks when visiting.

Generator restrictions: Hither Hills State Park enforces strict generator hours for noise control. "Generator hours are limited. There are spigots located down the middle of the rows. Go on google maps to find a spot near a spigot," recommends Nancy M. Campers should prepare accordingly if relying on electric equipment.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Fishermens Memorial State Park Campground offers structured play areas. "There are numerous recreation options available (playground, tennis courts, volleyball net, and basketball courts)," notes Lee D. The facilities provide entertainment alternatives when beach conditions are unfavorable.

Off-season quiet: Cedar Point County Park becomes significantly less crowded during fall months. "Spent Columbus Day weekend at Cedar Point. We pretty much had the entire park to ourselves," shares Chris A., highlighting the advantage of visiting during shoulder seasons with school-age children.

Educational opportunities: Hammonasset State Park includes nature education facilities. "You can ride your bike from your site to the playground, store, beach, local ice cream shop, coffee shop, or our family favorite, meig's point nature center," recommends Tiffany T. These learning centers offer programs specifically designed for younger visitors.

    Tips from RVers

Campground access: Crocker's Boatyard provides clear guidance for after-hours arrival. "Very concise directions on how to get into the property after the office is closed. We backed right up to the waters edge practically," reports Peggy L. The security protocols ensure safe arrivals regardless of timing.

Water access points: Hither Hills State Park requires strategic site selection for water convenience. "There is no pit at the sites. Very hard to find spot thru summer though," explains Murat H. RVers should research site maps to locate water spigots for filling tanks efficiently.

Site leveling challenges: Fishermens Memorial State Park contains areas requiring leveling equipment. "Some of the sites (55-65) are decidedly not level," warns Lee D. RVers should bring adequate leveling blocks and stabilizers when visiting this pet-friendly campground near Montauk.
