Camping options near Jamesport sit along the North Fork of Long Island, with elevations rarely exceeding 100 feet above sea level. The region experiences moderate coastal climate, with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping season. Sandy soil conditions throughout the area create excellent drainage after rain, meaning campsites typically dry quickly after storms.
What to do
Hiking trails: Suffolk County Sears Bellows County Park offers well-maintained trails through pine barrens and hardwood forests. "This is a nice campground - not crowded and centrally located. However, I cannot walk ANYWHERE without picking up ticks. Even on the large sand paths, going to and from the bathroom I find ticks," notes Denis S.
Kayaking and boating: Sears Bellows County Park provides access to Bellows Pond for water activities. "The first night I stayed here my friends and I rented some rowboats and went on the water. It was a lot of fun, and the price of the rowboat was pretty cheap," writes Nadia V.
Beach activities: The proximity to both bay and ocean beaches offers multiple water experiences. "Stayed on the bayside (site 30), which had a fantastic direct bay view. Although most sites have views of the bay, some are blocked by seagrass. Literally steps to the beach," reports Gianna at Smith Point County Park.
What campers like
Platform campsites: Some parks provide elevated tent sites for comfort in wet conditions. "This is one of my favorite campgrounds solely because there are platform sites so I can place my tent on a concrete or wooden platform," shares Giselle P. about Wildwood State Park Campground.
Location convenience: Proximity to local attractions means diverse day trip options. "It is right at the entrance to wine country on Long Island and has a beach on the Long Island Sound. (A little rocky on the north shore)," notes James O.
Spacious sites: Many campgrounds offer ample room between sites. "It's nice for kids they have an open field with a playground for kids. There are dog friendly which was very nice. It is a lil tight from each site but you have the beach and a little hiking trails that makes it worth it," explains Gino D. about Indian Island County Park.
What you should know
Tick prevention: Wooded areas throughout the region harbor significant tick populations. "You need a Suffolk county green key card. And then pay 50 dollars per night. It wasn't cheap but it's definitely cheaper than the hotels in the area," advises fernando C.
Camping restrictions: Some waterfront campgrounds limit tent camping. "4x4 a must, air down a must. Beautiful on the bay or ocean side. They also have a hill top section. Beautiful views. Dry camping in an Rv no tents," explains Lisa M. about Shinnecock East County Park.
Fire pit requirements: Not all campgrounds provide fire rings. "A little bit of a bummer on the rental for a firepit but the bathrooms are big and spacious," mentions Megan B., while another camper notes, "The only reason I gave 4 stars is because the campsites don't come with a fire ring. Not sure if this is because of maintenance, but it just wasn't super apparent until we got there."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Jamesport include dedicated play areas. "It's nice for kids they have an open field with a playground for kids," notes Gino D., while another reviewer shares, "Perfect place to take the little ones has a beautiful lake and a really nice playground highly recommended."
Wildlife viewing: Southaven County Park offers nature observation opportunities. "There seemed to be a disproportionate amount of dilapidated trailers on the side of the campground with no electricity. Places to eat are very close, and a 15 minute drive to Smith's Point beach was a plus," explains Dominick L.
Shower facilities: Family-friendly bathroom facilities vary between parks. "Bathrooms are a bit distanced from most sites, bathrooms are run of the mill but centrally located. Bugs weren't too bad in July," reports Stephanie S. about Hammonasset State Park.
Tips from RVers
Pull-through availability: RV campers will find dedicated areas at several campgrounds. "RV pull through sites were fantastic. It was a great campground for maiden voyage in new rig. Plenty of amenities," shares Lori R.
Hookup options: North Fork Cottages & RV Resort provides full-service sites. "Easy access to water and electric. There were tons of campers that were there for the season and kids playing together," notes Corey M.
Vehicle restrictions: Some campgrounds limit vehicles per site. "Recently they became very stringent about parking to vehicles at the site making it very difficult to visit with a family and 2 vehicles. I usually host group camping trips and the single vehicle rule makes that very difficult," warns Giselle P.
