Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Hyde Park, NY

Mills Norrie State Park Campground permits pets on a leash throughout its wooded Hudson River Valley campground. Campers can choose from tent sites, RV spots with electric hookups, and pet-friendly cabins located above the river. The park maintains spacious, well-spaced sites with fire rings and picnic tables, though some sites have steep terrain that may be challenging for RVs. Multiple hiking trails connect directly to the campground, giving dogs and owners easy access to woodland walks. Other pet-friendly options include Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park, which offers free dispersed camping with pets allowed, and Interlake RV Park & Campground, which features a range of pet-friendly accommodations and full amenities. The bathrooms and shower facilities at Mills Norrie are dated but functional, with the main bathhouse built during the 1930s New Deal era.

Hiking trails along the Hudson River provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with trailheads located just outside campsites at Mills Norrie. The park area remains quiet during weekdays and becomes more crowded on weekends, offering both solitude and social opportunities depending on timing. Dogs must remain on-leash at all designated campgrounds to protect wildlife and other campers. Most sites in the area require standard camping fees ranging from $15-$60 per night depending on amenities, with Taconic Hereford being the exception as a free camping option. The majority of campgrounds in the Hyde Park region operate seasonally from April through October, with Mills Norrie specifically open May through October. The park's proximity to the FDR National Historic Site, Vanderbilt House, and New Paltz provides additional pet-friendly outdoor exploration opportunities.

    Spacious Skies Woodland Hills

    A peaceful place with character.

My first visit to New York state was amazing, largely in part due to my campsite at the Woodland Hills campground. I had a back in site and was having problems with my camper, and they were able to change to a pull through at time of check in. However, it was in early May and before the summer crowds. The pond has a fountain which sounds like a small waterfall at night, and wildflowers were in bloom. Very nice bathrooms and showers, and my dog loved the dog park.

Fishing and Birding and close to everything

This park is literally in the heart of the action. You are within an hour to West Point Academy, vanderbilt mansion and franklin D roosevelt national historic sites in hyde park, and downtown manhattan. The walkway over the hudson is a must do and is right up the road a half an hour. Tons of fishing in the surrounding lakes and ponds. You feel like you are a world away, but within an hour to so much!! Great home base!

    Cozy Hills Campground

    Very nice campground however…

We have enjoyed our stay. Nice campground with lots of activities and things to do. However, we picked this place because it has an enclosed dog park. It does have an enclosed dog park but the fence is only 3 feet high. While this might be fine for some dogs, I have 2 young border collies that will jump that fence like it is not even there.

    Lots of fun

The campsite was great. Big and going after Labor Day means there was tons of space. Well priced. We did have neighbors that had a trailer and used their generator early in the morning and late at night. Beside that it was fantastic. We had planned on driving to hiking but there was so much to do around the camp site we just walked around and did the hiking near by. The dog park is wonderful. Our dog loved it.

    Interlake RV Park & Campground

Full amenities - stay for a few days or a season; lots to keep you occupied

It took me a while to identify a campground that was convenient for exploring the Hyde Park area, in particular the FDR National Historic Site (20-30 minutes away) and the Walkway over the Hudson, but this campground also offers plenty to keep the whole family occupied. It was Christmas in July while I was there, with decorations and planned activities to accompany it. All these amenities do come at a price. This year the most basic site with water costs $46; add electric on up to sewer and cable tv and you'll pay as much as $60/night.

With that you get free wi-fi, a heated pool, a lake for fishing and boating, a game room and snack bar, movies, other sports, and the security of a gated entrance. That's great if you're a family looking for entertainment for your kids, but I spent so much of my days running around exploring the area that I didn't feel I got my money's worth. Sites are close, some are sunnier than others. I was below the bath house/rec hall, but wasn't disturbed by lights or noise (I was in a tent) except from my next door neighbors.

If you don't need all the amenities, check out state parks in the area, but if you've got kids and want full hook-ups, want a snack bar so you don't always have to cook, I doubt you could beat the offerings here at Interlake RV Park.

    Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground

    Big Widely Spaced Sites

Lots of room in many sites for my 24 ft RV and 30 ft trailer. Big meadow in middle with new full playground set.

Dry camping but water available and a sewer dump. Gotta haul your own trash.

Two ponds to play in and a fenced dog park.

Some nice hiking in the park.

    Catskill/Kenneth L Wilson Campground

Nice stay and very friendly staff

Such a clean and well maintained campground. Staff were so nice and friendly. Only one shower area that was a bit of a trek from our site, a bike would have been nice to get around. We had to move our tent as we had set it back too far and was not on the site pad and park ranger Brian who was very lovely came and asked us to move it and we had a nice chat. Lovely big dog park. There are some nice little walks and small hikes on the ground with a lake that you can rent kayaks or canoes. Close to Woodstock which is a cute town. Our site was a little exposed but the sites either side of us were closed for restoration thankfully. There are some more secluded and set back sites too though.

    Serious Dog Bite Incident

Recently, we camped here for a week. We don’t ever post negative reviews like this. The last day, we experienced a violent attack by a very large and aggressive Pit Bull. The Pit Bull did not have a collar or a leash and was accidently let out of the RV to roam free and unsupervised. It immediately ran to our site(4 sites away) and attacked our dog that was tied at the time. The incident was unprovoked. While trying to save our dog, my wife and I were also attacked. The wounds were serious enough to require emergency transport to a hospital for treatment including stitches. All we could think of was what might have happened if our granddaughter had been playing with our dog.

To put it mildly, their existing pet policy is grossly lacking. They never checked what breed of dog or ask to see documentation of shots when we were registering. Yogi Bear Jellystone Park needs to better manage their pet policy to address aggressive dog breeds and ensure the safety of campers. We camped there for seven days and saw multiple sites have more than one large dog, which in many places we’ve camped at would have been banned due to breed type or size. We have RV’ed extensively across the US and have never seen such careless enforcement of a pet policy regarding aggressive dog breeds. Seriously, think about avoiding this park if you have pets or small children.

Guide to Hyde Park

Mills Norrie State Park Campground provides pet-friendly camping options in Staatsburg, New York, approximately 10 miles north of Hyde Park. Dogs are permitted at the campground's tent, RV, and cabin sites with standard leash requirements. The park features over 1,000 acres with hiking trails accessible to leashed pets, giving ample room for dog walking and exploration along the Hudson River. Campsites are spacious enough to accommodate pets comfortably, with many sites offering picnic tables and fire rings. The campground maintains basic pet waste facilities and enforces standard park regulations regarding animals. Most campers note the park is particularly peaceful and uncrowded during weekdays, making it ideal for those camping with pets who need quieter surroundings. The bathhouse facilities are functional but basic. The camping season runs from May through October.

Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park offers a more primitive dispersed camping experience where pets are welcome. This lesser-known 900-acre forested area provides a true wilderness camping experience while maintaining proximity to Hyde Park. Unlike established campgrounds, this location lacks formal facilities but offers the advantage of free camping with pets in a natural setting. Trails throughout the area provide excellent opportunities for dog walking and hiking. Campers should note that proper pet waste disposal is especially important in dispersed camping areas to maintain the pristine environment. The park backs up to additional protected forest areas, creating an extensive natural space for longer hiking adventures with dogs. Cell service remains available throughout most of the area despite the remote feel. Nearby Interlake RV Park & Campground offers a more developed alternative with pet-friendly sites, clean facilities, and proximity to local attractions like the FDR home and library.
