Cabins near Highland Falls, New York sit within the Hudson Highlands region, characterized by moderate elevation changes ranging from 400 to 1,400 feet above sea level. Winter temperatures average between 16-37°F with summer highs reaching 85°F. Most rustic cabin accommodations remain open from April through October with limited winter availability.
What to do
Swimming at dedicated beaches: Round Pond Recreation Area features a maintained beach area with established swimming zones. "The campground is beautiful and the staff was wonderful! We were very impressed with the playground on site! Unfortunately, due to our early start in the camping season the weather did not allow us to enjoy fishing or the beach," notes Jacey H.
Hiking local trails: High Point State Park Campground connects to the Appalachian Trail through accessible trail spurs. "I stopped at this shelter while hiking the AT in High Point SP. It was raining the entire day and the shelter provided a dry place to take a break," shares Richard M. about the trail shelters.
Stargazing at secluded sites: The Hudson Valley offers minimal light pollution at strategic camping locations. "The sites are secluded from each other and most if not all have an elevated space to put tents or chairs. Each place comes with a lamp hang, a fire pit, and a picnic table," explains Damia F. about High Point's layout.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Round Pond Recreation Area maintains well-kept bathroom facilities throughout the camping season. "Bath houses are absolutely spotless. Fire pits, electric and water hook ups only. Will return! Staff is friendly and helpful. Military families should check it out!" reports Mindie C.
Morning lake views: Mist rising off nearby lakes creates distinctive morning views at many cabin locations. "The lake was beautiful in the morning with mist or steam. We took one afternoon to visit the High Point Monument, which was lovely," describes Dwight D. about their experience at Sawmill Lake.
Proximity to NYC: Croton Point Park cabins provide accessibility for urban residents seeking weekend getaways. "Nice site and a 30-40 minute drive from Western Queens. Tent site is after the RV site, so use their LX before you get to site if you can," recommends Jonathan C., highlighting the park's convenience.
What you should know
Military-only facilities: Several cabins in Highland Falls operate exclusively for service members and their families. "Round Pond is camping reserved for active and retired military personnel only. We drove through and the whole space is rather large. There are several signs everywhere making it clear that it is only for military," explains Ethan K.
Site terrain variations: Sebago Cabin Camp features different terrain elevations across the property. "The gravel driveway is on a 30-40 degree incline. The tent was too long for the 12'x10' platform, so we had to set it up on the flattest part and hope not to roll down the hill in the night," cautions Dwight D. about site selection.
Limited services: Cabin rentals often provide minimal amenities compared to full-service resorts. "Sebago has a huge lake and great beach area. It was perfect for lounging and swimming in during a hot summer day. It was definitely more on the pricier end for just a weekend camping getaway," notes Ethan K.
Tips for camping with families
Research age-appropriate activities: Jellystone Park Gardiner features dedicated children's programming. "This campground has a lot of activities and has kids of all ages galore. I was worried my 12 year old would be too old for it but he enjoyed making friends there," shares Stephanie H.
Consider activity proximity: Select cabins based on proximity to desired recreational facilities. "It has a event just about every weekend with kid activity. Nice pool that is shallow so you can relax and let the little ones go in the water park section alone or they have a 3 ft pool also," explains Jennifer I. and Amanda S. about Jellystone's family amenities.
Check wifi and connectivity: Cell service varies significantly between cabin locations. "Just a note to other campers with T-Moblie, we did not have any service on the campsite, however just a hop in the car or a quick walk down the mountain for 5G service near the entrance off the main road," advises Jacey H. about Round Pond.
Tips from RVers
Confirm utility connections: The Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center provides different service levels across sites. "The parking for your car is 1/4 mile away but they allow you to unload and give you a wagon to take stuff to your site. Bathrooms and super nice and clean," explains Thomas M. about the transfer process.
Check road access: Several cabin areas have limited accessibility for larger vehicles. "This must be one of the most breathtaking camp grounds (family friendly) right on the Hudson. Tent sites are very private with some dirt roads to exit out but thats what make it unique experience!" notes Anil S. about Croton Point's access limitations.
Verify seasonal availability: Many cabin facilities operate on limited seasonal schedules. "We've spent years here, with Dan & Janet but, are looking forward to returning this year under new management, as they enjoy retirement after many years of hard work," mentions Heather M. about Lake Frederick Outdoor Recreation Area's operational timeline.
