What to do
Riverside relaxation: At Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground, camping right beside the river offers natural white noise from rushing water. According to one camper: "The sites are extremely close when down by the river, but the view is awesome. The road is right across the street but you cannot hear it at all and it is covered by the trees and sound of the rushing water."
Water adventures: Zoar Outdoor offers camping with direct access to water activities. "The campground is connected to an adventure/outing company that provides white water rafting, tubing and other water activities on a nearby river. It's close to where locals jump off outcrops into the lazy river and hang out on the river side."
Unique train-themed stay: Chester Railway Station provides a one-of-a-kind cabin camping experience in a converted caboose. One visitor reported: "It is a really fun place to spend a night, especially for a train enthusiast. The caboose is stationed on a big grassy field, near a real railroad. It sleeps 4 and you can set up tents outside too. You hear the trains running at night."

What you should know
Booking timing: October Mountain State Forest Campground requires advance planning. "First off no same day reservations or walk ups allowed. It tells you that the fee is $17.50 per site. I expected a little added extra fee for booking etc.... check out was $58.50 per night," warned a camper.
Bathroom facilities: Most cabins rely on central bathroom facilities that vary in quality. At Austin Hawes, "Bathrooms are nice, maintained, and well lit. You can get ice and firewood at the camp store at the entrance."
Seasonal considerations: American Legion State Forest has specific pest challenges in warmer months: "In the summer, this place is mosquito central, so bring lots of bug spray or be eaten alive!"
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Country Aire Campgrounds features planned entertainment for children. "This campground is family oriented. They have a pool they have games we even have a hayride pulled by a tractor. It is run by a family business."
Water features: Pine Acres offers multiple water options for kids. "AWESOME pools (very kid friendly), parks, dog park, hiking trails and even sections off of the trails to find your own private beach on the water."
Bear awareness: Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground requires proper food storage. "This campground is peaceful and has sites that are well spaced. A number of them have proximity to each other but not to the rest of the sites, making for a great multi-family gathering. There are lots of black bears so keeping food in the near lockers or locked in the car at all times is a must!"
Tips from RVers
Site privacy considerations: At October Mountain, "What site you get makes all the difference. There are many, I would say most, sites that you feel very exposed and out in the open. Just plopped next to someone on the grass. Look for the sites that go off to the side (not on the loops) like 39-40."
Hookup options: Country Aire Campgrounds provides amenities beyond basic cabins. "I have stayed here many times over the years due to work in the area. The owners are always working on improving sites. The pool is ok, the new playground is awesome according to my little experts and there are some nice sites along a brook."
Cell service limitations: Pack downloaded maps when staying at American Legion State Forest as one camper notes: "No cellphone service, which is either a good or bad thing, depending on how you feel about it."
