Taos Valley RV Park & Campground's pet-friendly sites accommodate tent campers, RV travelers, and glamping enthusiasts seeking accommodations near Arroyo Hondo. The campground maintains clean facilities while welcoming pets throughout the property. Many nearby campgrounds including Hotel Luna Mystica and Cebolla Mesa Campground also accept dogs with minimal restrictions. Tent camping spots at Arroyo Seco Dispersed NF Camping offer free, primitive sites where pets can join their owners in a natural setting. Wide spaces and good views are strong points at many area campgrounds, particularly at Taos Monte Bello RV Park where spacious RV sites provide ample room for pets to rest comfortably at designated camping spots.
The Rio Grande Gorge area provides excellent hiking opportunities for campers with dogs, with trails accessible from multiple campgrounds. Dispersed camping near Taos requires approaching from the west rather than crossing John Dun Bridge when traveling with pets. During summer months, early morning or evening walks help prevent paw pad burns on hot surfaces. Most campgrounds enforce standard leash requirements, though enforcement varies by location. The Taos area experiences significant temperature fluctuations, requiring pet owners to prepare for both hot days and cool nights. Earthship Biotecture and the Rio Grande Bridge, both pet-friendly attractions, lie within 5-15 minutes of most camping options. The area's dispersed camping locations provide excellent stargazing opportunities for evening dog walks with minimal light pollution.

Such a great spot! Several small camp loops along the river. Each offers different amenities. We were in the arroyo hondo loop and it was primitive camping...no water acces, no power, pit toilet. There are showers and potable water at the second camp loop on the road( less than a mile away.). The leaves were turning, we could walk down to the river right from our campsite, we could see a million stars at night, and we loved our time there.
No cell service for several miles near this canyon so plan accordingly.
We really like this RV Park! The spaces are wide and angled enough to allow for great views! There are no trees, so you will be using your AC and awning when it’s hot out. Sites were quite level and hookups are easy access. There are both full hookup sites and water and electric only sites; there is an RV dump. Laundry, restrooms and convenience store are still closed due to Covid - much of New Mexico is still this way. It is right off Highway 64 which has a minimal amount of road noise, but provides easy access. There’s a Pet Resort across the road where you hear dogs barking in the distance in the mornings. They do need to start working on weed control before the weeds get out of hand. Each of those negatives are so minimal, I still rate this as a five! Wide spaces and good views are always strong points in my reviews!

Taos Monte Bello RV Park is an excellent place to stay in the middle of it all. There are limited options in the area and this small, family-run business delivers on exactly what we needed. Their sites are very wide and spacious, the views are outstanding (even though smoke from the wildfires caused some obstruction) and the area is full of spots to explore.
I had a little trouble making a reservation as they don’t currently accept online reservations and getting ahold of them via phone or email took constant attempts over the course of 24 hours. However, once I got through, they were exceptionally friendly and accommodated us for a same-day Reservation. The owner invited us to arrive early as the spot was empty and upon arrival, gave us a full download of the area including providing maps and guidebooks. All their amenities were closed due to COVID (laundry, bathrooms, BBQ grilling area) but I won’t detract any stars for this as I believe it’s a wise decision. The wifi was better than average the entire time, it was a little spotty at times but we were consistently able to stream and upload large videos without fail. We were in a spot close to the office and it’s a small enough park that this seems like there would be a consistent signal.
The park is 5 minutes from the Rio Grande Bridge and 10 minutes from Earthship Biotecture, both worth a visit. The Taos plaza is about 15 minutes away and there is plenty to do. We found an awesome restaurant in nearby Arroyo Hondo.
The cost is very reasonable for FHU, large spaces and good proximity. The hookups are solid. They also offer shaded tent spots that looked killer. The grounds are gated with a passcode which offers nice assurance, though the area is very quiet and rural. It’s off a major roadway but road noise is limited. There is a dog boarding kennel across the street that was a little noisy one night but not anything crazy.
They take very good care of these grounds and are very COVID conscious, so come prepared to respect distance and face coverings, just like in all places across NM. We will definitely return.
This park was a great choice. Tucked in a canyon with a stream running through it, we secured a spot on the water. Large pine trees, tiered spots, walking distance to the cute town of Red River.
Small gift shop with very few items, no firewood for sale that I could see. Friendly staff, dog park, fishing, deer come in every night
This RV resort has beautiful views of the mountains. Angel Fire RV Resort has beautiful grounds, the bath houses and very nice and modern, very nice hot tub, beautiful clubhouse. The resort has fire pits, pickleball courts, large dog park, putting range, walking path, laundry facilities. It is also close to several towns. One that you can ride your bike too. This is a A+ resort for TV camping.
Stayed in spot R1 which is pretty small/crowded in, but near river and trees. Lovely duck and geese ponds and river walk, also dog park. Clean restrooms and showers but no changing stalls in either mens/womens shower. Very quiet and affordable. Near to grocery. Grounds are well-kept and healthy & green (lots of trees, shrubs, beautiful walk by river). Sorry pics are a bit washed out, doesn't do it justice.
Smaller camp ground, with modern and very clean bathrooms and showers! Dog friendly, with a small dog park to boot. Easy in and out, hooks ups and wifi. Manager on site and very attentive. We stayed April 1 for one night, was quiet, friendly and comfortable. Will stay again!
Not a bad setting. Surrounded by mountains, yet you are really in the city of Taos. Prices are fair, pull through with Electric and Water $43.00. The landscape is really cool, fits the New Mexico motif. A little noisy in the morning with the barking dogs in the surrounding neighborhood. We felt safe with no problems.
Arroyo Hondo sits at 6,870 feet elevation in northern New Mexico, where temperatures can fluctuate 30-40 degrees between day and night. The area features a mix of mesa-top camping and riverside sites within the Rio Grande Gorge system, where dispersed campers must contend with limited shade and cell coverage during peak summer months.
Hiking to river confluence: 1.5 miles from Montoso Campground down to the Rio Grande. "You can walk down and swim in the river but you will need a swim once you get back up again!" notes Alice R. The trail offers "fantastic access down to the trails along the Rio Grande. You can also walk pretty quickly down to the confluence, which offers some nice views of both gorges," according to Talon W.
Mountain biking on forest roads: Access multiple trails from Columbine Campground where "There are a few trailheads towards the back of the campground with awesome trails," explains Brittany S. The area provides "hiking trail, clean, informative host," according to Mike W., making it easy to locate appropriate routes for your skill level.
Night sky photography: The area around Arroyo Hondo offers excellent dark sky viewing. "We busted out our Airskirts Insulation to help keep our floor warmer and our heated air inside" during overnight photography sessions at Hotel Luna Mystica, reports Shari G. The campground is "ideal for solar power, as is the New Mexico weather. We also had no problem connecting with Starlink."
Riverside tent sites: Campers appreciate the water proximity at Cuchilla Campground where "Sites are right on a creek & have picnic tables," according to Tara S. Another camper notes, "The highway sounds are mostly drowned out due to the beautiful sounds of the river flowing. The spot was clean and easy to get to in the truck out for most standard vehicles."
Low-cost options: Budget-conscious visitors appreciate the value. At Montoso Campground, Jenny M. calls it the "Best $7 you can spend" with "awesome views, got visited by some deer, and had the whole place to ourselves." Similarly, Wild Rivers Recreation Area offers affordability: "Super cheap BLM campground - $7 a night! - with beautiful views and hiking," according to Evelyn.
Clean facilities: Many pet-friendly campgrounds maintain exceptionally clean restrooms. "The most beautiful pitt toilet I've ever seen, even had a car air freshener in it," reports Anne W. about Montoso. At Cebolla Mesa Campground, Christopher P. notes there's a "Pit toilet, table, fire pit" and Abby M. adds it has "1 clean vault toilet, but no TP so bring your own."
Access limitations: Some roads require careful navigation. For dispersed camping near Taos, "you MUST approach from the west, you can't get here coming from the east over John dun Bridge," warns Madeleine H. She adds, "Dirt road but we did it with no problem with our 24ft trailer." At Cebolla Mesa, expect a "Long and slightly rough dirt road entry. If it rains or storms you'll have a tough time getting out with a camper if you don't have a 4x4."
Cellular connectivity: Coverage varies throughout the region. Hotel Luna Mystica offers strong connectivity where campers report, "our starlink really works super fast here" and "We also had no problem connecting with Starlink and had LTE in the campground." At Cebolla Mesa, Abby M. reports "1-2 bars LTE AT&T service available near bathroom but gets worse the further you go away from it."
Weather preparedness: Temperature extremes require planning. Wild Rivers Recreation Area can be "hot as all hell" with "barely any protection available so be careful." For cold weather camping, Michael N. advises at Cuchilla Campground to "pack as warm as possible" during fall and winter months.
Child-friendly biking: Paved roads at BLM Wild Rivers Recreation Area provide safe cycling. "Great bicycling for kids on nicely paved roads," notes Edwin Y. The area features "About 8 small loops, many with trails dropping 900' to the Rio Grande in the gorge below."
Site selection strategy: Choose locations carefully with children in mind. At Arroyo Seco Dispersed NF Camping, Melissa J. reports, "We brought our four dogs and 13 year old. There's so much to do to keep them busy." She adds it's "peaceful and quiet" despite being popular with other families.
Water access considerations: Riverside camping provides natural entertainment but requires supervision. At Cuchilla Campground, one camper notes, "Right next to a river which is pretty and convenient," while another mentions their dog "was in and out of the river all day" at the pet-friendly campsite.
Site leveling challenges: At Taos Monte Bello RV Park, "The gravel sites are long and pretty wide offering some privacy. The hook ups were well placed and worked well during our stay," reports Patrick J. For those with larger rigs, "The spaces are wide and angled enough to allow for great views" according to Melody M., who appreciates that "sites were quite level and hookups are easy access."
Spacing between sites: RVers value room to spread out. Monte Bello RV Park offers "huge spaces and can accommodate the biggest rigs," according to Pat W., though he notes "There is no shade and nothing recreational to do on-site." At Columbine Campground, there's "more than expected space and offset to adjacent sites," according to Patrick M.
Parking access limitations: RV sites at dog-friendly campgrounds near Arroyo Hondo vary in accessibility. At Cuchilla Campground, "You have to leave your car up by the road" for some sites. For Columbine Campground, Josh M. found "The spot was mostly level making set up easy," while John H. cautions "Not a terrible campground but, I would not make the drive to stay here again."
