What to do
Beach activities at Cape May Point: Cape Henlopen State Park provides access to pristine beaches within a short drive. "The beach is pristine and protected so it feels cleaner and calmer than the more commercial beaches. Because it used to be a fort, there are still watch towers and one is done so that you can climb to the top and have a view of the whole park," notes Sarah M.
Historical exploration: The area's military history offers unique camping experiences beyond just beach time. At Cape Henlopen State Park Campground, "There is a lot to do as far history and the old WW2 stuff. Really cool to explore. The beach and sand dunes are right here. There's a biking loop and plenty of coast line to fish," according to Daniel S.
Cycling and hiking trails: Extensive trail networks connect campgrounds to beaches and towns. "There is a connector that you can take from the park all the way to the beach in Rehoboth. We really enjoy the Gordon's Pond bike trail as well as the Junction and Breakwater trail. The biking options are truly endless! Catch awesome views of coastal maritime forests and salt marshes teeming with birds," writes Sarah C.
Water recreation beyond swimming: Many campgrounds offer kayaking and boating options. At Belleplain State Forest, "There is a small lake that was great to kayak on," says Lisa S., while Adam I. mentions, "Fishing was good from our inflatable kayak. Beautiful lake."
What campers like
Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathrooms and showers rank high in camper satisfaction. At Beachcomber Camping Resort, "Bathhouses are clean and well maintained. Can't comment on the bathrooms and bathhouses as they were closed due to covid-19. Much of the other amenities were all pretty much closed too," notes Douglas P.
Unique accommodation options: Glamping in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey area offers alternatives to traditional tent camping. Denise D. stayed at Beachcomber Camping Resort and says, "We stayed in a teepee and it is one of the coolest places I have camped. These days I like glamping and this was the best experience yet!"
Family-oriented activities: Campgrounds feature numerous child-friendly amenities. At Ocean View Resort Campground, "A few years ago they added a pirate themed splash pad by the pool and last year they unveiled a brand new mini golf course. Bathhouses are very clean and updated. They have a Great swimming Lake with a huge sandy beach," writes Harry L.
Wooded campsites: Tree cover provides welcome shade during hot summer months. At Belleplain State Forest, "The site was clean, the fore rings were perfect where you could have coals going for cooking and a simultaneous large wood fire. Huge campsite. Even though there wasn't a ton of privacy it felt like we were in an enchanted woodland village," Mary F. shares.
