Best RV Parks & Resorts near Scotch Plains, NJ

Several RV campgrounds operate within 30 miles of Scotch Plains, with Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City providing 90 sites with electric hookups, water connections, and dump station access. The park functions primarily as a base for Manhattan exploration, with sites positioned extremely close together on a gravel lot. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers paved, level RV sites with electric and water hookups in a more natural setting with greater spacing between sites. Crystal Springs Lodges & RV Resort in Cream Ridge accommodates big rigs with 50-amp service and full hookups. "This is basically a parking lot, with absolutely nothing but a spot to park. It's pricy, but if you're planning on seeing everything NYC has to offer, you can't get a better base camp."

Navigating to Liberty Harbor RV Park requires careful driving through urban streets that may challenge larger motorhome owners. Sites at most area RV parks range from basic water and electric connections to full-service pads with sewer hookups. Reservations are essential at Liberty Harbor, which maintains year-round availability but fills quickly during peak tourist seasons. Cell service varies across the region, with stronger signals at urban locations like Liberty Harbor and potentially weaker coverage at more rural campgrounds. According to one visitor, "Getting in and out is not for someone in a brand new 45' travel trailer. Know your rig and know how to maneuver it in tight spaces." Most parks accommodate pets, though military installations like NWS Earle RV Park and Military Park Fort Dix Range 14 Camp typically prohibit animals.

    Adventure Bound Camping (Tall Pines)

    Deceiving Website

We stayed at Adventure Bound Tall Pines in Elmer, New Jersey, for Memorial Day weekend for a quick getaway. Despite reserving and paying for a“Premium” site, it fell far short. But there were still a few things we liked…

    THINGS I LIKED:

    1. Super-friendly staff, especially Allie, who was courteous and seemed to try to make things right

    2. Lots of mature shade trees

    3. DJ at the pool Saturday and Sunday and live band Saturday evening

    4. Close proximity to Delsea Drive-in Theatre and Cohenzick Zoo

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

    1. I reserved and paid-in-full for a premium site which listed 50-amp service and a concrete pad. Nope. Only 30-amp service and no concrete pad. When I called the office, assuming there must’ve been a mistake, I was told by two different staff members that their website is“wonky.” I wouldn’t mind as much, but this weekend was 90-degrees each day and humid, so it would’ve been good to have air conditioning.

    2. The entire park was dirty sand with weeds growing everywhere

    3. This place is not big-rig friendly, difficult to navigate some of the turns in our 45’ motorhome and taking scratches from tree branches that should be trimmed

    4. I paid$432 for 3-nights and feel like I was taken

    WOULD WE COME BACK?

Nope. I’m sticking with campgrounds that give you what you paid for.

    Kymers Camping Resort

Fun, friendly & nestled in the woods

We stayed at Kymer's on a whim for a weekend, so we could be close to Mountain Creek for a Spartan Race. It truly exceeded our expectations in all aspects. This is a family friendly, camper-friendly place. Lots of seasonals- everyone waves, everyone stops to chat. This is what a campground should feel like. The sound of laughter and play sitting around the huge, clean pool was refreshing. Our site was Oak 10. It was level, good placement of electric water & sewer connects. Camp store has all the basics you might need. There is a brook that flows adjacent to the property. It's peaceful & magical. Pet friendly, although we didn't have our pup with us. We will be back again. I almost feel like I'm revealing a hidden gem with this post. 💎

    Colonial Woods Family Resort

    Not big rig friendly.

Ok so let me start off by saying. If we still had our smaller travel trailer this review would’ve been at least 4 stars. However this place is not the place for you if you have a fifth wheel. The roads are very narrow, pretty sizable boulders on both sides, trees are very low and need to be trimmed (almost took my ac out with a huge limb). Now if you’re not big rig camping like we do, this place is great for you. Close to the ringing rocks and three other towns. We were able to do so much even though it rained the entire weekend we were there.

Pros Great People beautiful surroundings Nice Bathrooms Quiet and Peaceful Accessible Nice Pool Every store U could Need is in about 15 mins Away Not Alot of Stupid rules just Be respectful Pet friendly

    Mountain Vista Campground

    Mt Vista Campground

Beautiful Campground. Clean. Gravel sites. Fire ring and picnic table. All sites have ample room. Lots of pull through for bigger rigs. Wooded. Large dog park. Love the Campground except our site is near a fairly busy road which takes away from that beautiful tranquility. They have camouflaged it as best they could. Friendly staff. Lots to do. Pool, tennis. Sauna, pond for fishing ( catch & release ). Would definitely recommend.

    Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

    Nice, small, spacious campground

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

    Panther Lake Camping Resort

    Stayed all summer

We stayed at Panther Lake as full timers all season. Great during the week but very busy on weekends. Could be noisy with children not very well supervised.
Friendly, helpful staff. Cable TV poor when it rains. Cell service spotty all carriers. No internet at sites. Lake beautiful and pool nice.

    Turkey Swamp Park

    Quiet Woodland Campground

Turkey Swamp Park is a great find! Heavily wooded and supremely quiet, it’s located not far from anywhere you’d want to be. 30 minutes to the shore. Every site is a pull-through, large and spacious with great woodland views. 30amp and water. Dump station.

The park has miles of shady forested trails for hiking and dog walking. there’s a large lake here too, for water based recreational activities.

The bathrooms, showers, and laundry are co-located in a centrally situated structure. Everything inside is clean and well-maintained.

We’ve got good cell signal with Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. (We use all three.) Good OTA television signal also.

We spent three days here in July 2021.

Guide to Scotch Plains

Camping opportunities near Scotch Plains, New Jersey range from urban locations with Manhattan skyline views to more secluded forested settings in the surrounding counties. The region sits at low elevations of 70-150 feet above sea level with humid subtropical climate conditions. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F with high humidity, while spring and fall camping seasons offer milder conditions with temperatures between 50-70°F.

What to do

Explore Manhattan attractions: Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City serves as a base for city exploration with ferries nearby. "Very plain & functional, no frills but right on the harbor & on the very edge of Jersey City, close to a ferry & the train that takes u across to New York City. Shopping & restraunts are right next door. We brought scooters & had a great stay!" shares Emily L.

Visit Statue of Liberty: Several campgrounds provide access to national monuments. "We spent 3 nights here last week. I was in NYC for business and we took our RV. Very convenient location. My wife visited Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The sites had electric and water and were in a fenced off section of tue marina parking area," notes a visitor at Liberty Harbor.

Hike forest trails: Mahlon Dickerson Reservation offers natural woodland experiences. "We always hike to the lake here, it's a very easy hike and also very peaceful. Definitely come here when you get a chance," mentions Paulene-Amanda M. The reservation includes multiple trails with lake views and peaceful forest settings.

What campers like

Proximity to public transportation: Campers appreciate RV parks with access to trains and ferries. "The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8," notes Joe R. about Jersey City accommodations. This provides car-free access to Manhattan attractions.

Natural settings outside urban areas: Pleasant Acres Farm RV Resort offers a countryside alternative. "Large levelled spaces but a little muddy. Good for a quiet, relaxing weekend; not very close to attractions otherwise. My daughter loved the horses and goats," writes Erin S. The farm setting includes animals for children to interact with.

Spacious woodland sites: Some campers prefer more secluded options. "Located in the Skylands of New Jersey, Mahlon Dickerson Campgound is a perfect place to spend a few nights or a couple of weeks. The campsites are paved and mostly level. They are wooded and large," explains Jeff W. about the Jefferson Township location.

What you should know

Urban camping constraints: City-adjacent RV parks typically feature limited space and basic amenities. "This is a pricey park, but options are limited. As in almost non existent. This is a prime location for visiting the city or heading down the shore," explains Joe R. about Jersey City options.

Navigation challenges: Urban streets require careful driving. "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze," advises a Liberty Harbor visitor.

Military campground restrictions: NWS Earle RV Park requires military ID for access. "Small campground W/ 8 spaces in the main area and 7 in an adjacent area. All spaces are level concrete With fill hookups and attached concrete patio," reports Jeffrey. These facilities offer lower prices but have specific entrance requirements.

Tips for camping with families

Farm animal interactions: Children enjoy campgrounds with livestock. "Lots of seasonals and lots of cabins, many RV sites I think all with full hookups. Plenty to occupy the kids. Playground, hayride, animals to feed (goats, chickens, donkey and pony)," notes Janelle G. about Pleasant Acres Farm.

Swimming facilities: Thousand Trails Timothy Lake South offers pool access for families. "Campground was clean, staff was friendly, sites were decent. My kids explored the playground and found it sufficient," states Ashley O. The facility includes recreational amenities for children.

Park location considerations: Evaluate distance to bathrooms and amenities when camping with children. "The office, playground, dog park, pool, laundry are located at the top of the hill. Camping spots are downhill, a good distance from the office and amenities," warns a Pleasant Acres visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategies: For RVs requiring more space, request specific locations. "When we arrived we were surprised at how many seasonal campsites there were. We came on a holiday weekend and thought it would be rowdy and loud. So far, nice and quiet," reports Angie G. from Timothy Lake South.

Water and electric considerations: Check utility locations before setup. "Power is at the far back & sewage is in the middle (left to right). A longer camper will be parked over the sewage connection," advises Jeffrey about the Earle military campground.

Cell service variations: Military Park Fort Dix Range 14 Camp and other rural locations may have limited connectivity. "We stayed here in November-December to do some exploring around Jersey. Not a lot going on at the fam camp. Clean and gravel," notes Rara B. about the Fort Dix location, which provides basic accommodations with potential connectivity limitations.
