Turkey Swamp Park offers camping from April through mid-November with five distinct loops containing 64 total sites. The dirt roads through the campground remain well-maintained during dry conditions but can become problematic during rain. Sites in Loops B-E feature pull-through driveways with lantern hooks, picnic tables, and fire rings standard at each location. The campground houses one central bathhouse located in D Loop, serving all campers regardless of which loop they occupy.
What to do
Water recreation on 17-acre lake: Turkey Swamp Park offers non-motorized boating with seasonal rentals available. "Kayaking, Canoeing. The list goes on. I've been here a few times, every time I'm here I barely touch my phone," writes camper Tylen L. Another visitor notes, "In the summer, canoe, kayak, paddle boats, and row boats are available for rental."
Winter ice skating: Seasonal recreation options extend beyond the main camping season. Campers who visit during colder months enjoy unique activities not available in summer. "We go every year. It has everything the outdoorsman could ask for. Bring your bow and shoot at the hay barrels. Ice skate on the lake in the winter or just enjoy a gorgeous walk in the woods," shares Patrick M. about his experiences at Allaire State Park.
Biking opportunities: Several campgrounds provide dedicated cycling routes on both paved and unpaved surfaces. "A really nice bike ride to Ocean Grove and other beach towns. There are outlets in the bathroom and someone put a fullass drip coffee machine in one of the sinks. I did not refuse a fresh cup of brew," reports Dan X. about his biking adventures from Allaire State Park.
What campers like
Spacious wooded sites: Campers consistently appreciate the natural spacing between sites at several parks. "Sites are level and well maintained. They also allowed us to put the car tent on the same site as a friend's camper. There's a nice lake to kayak or paddle boat on. each site has a fire pit, picnic table and garbage can," writes Jean T. about Butterfly Camping Resort.
Family activities: Many campgrounds offer organized events and recreational facilities. "The campground was super clean too. It was perfect!" exclaims JAEWOOK P. about their family camping experience at Turkey Swamp Park. Another camper at Butterfly notes, "My husband and I came to this campground for a quick weekend getaway with our dogs. We had a great time! There was tons of stuff to do. There's a pond to fish, trails to walk/bike, basketball, sand volleyball, the list goes on and on."
Privacy barriers: Natural divisions between sites provide campers with added seclusion. "This campground offers many things we were looking for: proximity to Six Flags, cleanliness, access to nature and entertainment for the kids with quiet and relaxation. The sites are cozy and each lined with natural shrubbery and in some cases fencing," explains Tina D. about her experience at Butterfly Camping Resort.
What you should know
Terrain challenges: The sandy soil common throughout central New Jersey campgrounds creates specific conditions campers should prepare for. "The site was sandy. The whole place is sandy. This is messy, especially after a bit of rain (which we had), and makes it a constant challenge to keep the sand out of the RV," explains Matt S. about Timberland Lake Campground.
