Cabin camping near Wheatland, Missouri provides visitors access to the Ozark Highland region with elevations ranging from 700-1,200 feet. The area features rolling hills surrounding Pomme de Terre Lake, which maintains a summer water temperature averaging 82°F. Most cabin rentals in the region require a minimum two-night stay during peak season from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Pittsburg Area Campground at Pomme de Terre State Park offers excellent lake fishing access directly from many campsites. "This has become our favorite family campground. The sites on the lake are awesome and large. The showers are clean and private. Fishing is great! My kids love it too!" shares Tiffany H.
Water recreation: Stockton State Park provides marked kayak trails on the lake for paddlers staying in cabins or camping. "Great state park. Cleanest restrooms I've seen. Great trails. Bring the kayaks. They have some pretty cool kayak marked trails on the lake. Beautiful sail boats to see as well!" notes Katie R.
Hiking access: Bennett Spring State Park contains over twenty miles of hiking trails ranging from easy stream walks to challenging mountain paths. "The park has a pool open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Several different campgrounds offer a variety. Primarily a trout fisherman's paradise the park offers plenty for the family. Wonderful hiking trails, a restaurant, and the above mentioned pool keep everyone entertained," explains Jeremiah K.
What campers like
Secluded sites: Pittsburg Park Campground offers privacy between sites in certain loops. "Two parks in one. The Hermitage and The Pittsburgh. We chose the 400 loop of Pittsburgh for its secluded spots. Spaces are not stacked on top of each other. You're in the woods so take bug spray. Level paved lots to choose from. Fire rings and covered picnic tables. Lots of shade," reports Cindy K.
Bunkhouse accommodations: B Berry Farms & Co. provides unique cabin accommodations with thoughtful amenities. "We stayed in the quaint little bunkhouse with an air conditioner and all the amenities that we needed- a little frig, toaster oven, microwave, sink, coffee maker with pods, storage the we could use for our things we brought and the bunk beds that held 5 of us," describes Hannah B.
Lake views: Many sites at Stockton State Park offer water views within walking distance. "We stayed in campground 1 right next to the play ground. Super clean, had a view of the lake. Within walking distance of the marina. Everyone was very friendly... Kayak trails on the lake...beautiful clean swimming beaches," reports Katie R.
What you should know
Water level fluctuations: Lake levels can change dramatically at Pomme de Terre Lake, affecting campsite availability. "We arrived to find that the normal lake level had risen from 830 ft to 860+. Needless to say almost all lakeside campgrounds were closed. We arrived at our site and identified that we had 13 inches until our site was to be claimed by the lake," explains Josh S.
Seasonal considerations: Many cabin facilities close or limit operations outside peak season. Hidden Valley Outfitters operates from March 1 to October 31, with most amenities available only during this period.
Limited Wi-Fi: Most cabin locations have limited or no internet access. Arrowhead Point RV Park & Cabins is one exception, with Wi-Fi available at their main facility.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Choose sites near play areas for convenience with children. "We stayed in campground 1 right next to the play ground. Super clean, had a view of the lake. Within walking distance of the marina," notes a Stockton State Park camper.
Swimming beaches: Several parks offer designated swimming areas with varying amenities. "There is a nice little swimming beach up the road and a boat ramp. If you like to fish or kayak the water isn't far from any of the sites," reports Seth about Pittsburg Park.
Recreational facilities: Hidden Valley Outfitters provides comprehensive family activities on-site. "My family had a blast on a short weekend trip. The staff shuttled our three kayaks back to our campsite after we floated all day, which was nice. No complaints. Would recommend staying here," shares Patrick M.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Look for level concrete pads when booking cabins or RV sites. "We had a later checkin and they had the campfire with plenty of wood going on our arrival. They also had a small tiki torch burning and a s'mores starter package!" reports a visitor at B Berry Farms & Co.
Hookup limitations: Many cabin areas have limited hookups, so prepare accordingly. "Real nice park Especially for what we paid. $8.00 for electric only per night. Senior rate off season, $2.00 discount. Two loops East & West. We stayed in the east on a fairly level site, all nicely spaced," notes a Stockton State Park visitor.
Cabin alternatives: Consider RV sites for larger groups needing more space. "Lots of space at the campsites! We enjoyed 2 nites at the tent sites with electric hookups. Great spot on the niangua river with easy access to the river which was a nice place to relax after fishing over at Bennett all day," recommends a Hidden Valley Outfitters guest.
