    Current River Campground

    Not particularly worth it.

Location is great. The campground is on the basic side, with gravel and dirt everywhere. Not an issue, if that's what you're expecting.

We were in site 45 and our friends in site 46. These are both 30 amp sites, no sewer, and we both have 50 amp service. This shouldn't be a problem, assuming we're pulling less than 30 amps. With 1 AC running, were only pulling less than 15 amps, but still having multiple electrical issues the whole weekend. Both sites ended up having to run our generators most of the time we were here. The staff did come out and take a look at the pedestals, and even replaced the breaker on ours. We were told that because we were at the end of the line, and we had big rigs, that it was causing issues. However, it shouldn't be causing an issue if we weren't pulling more than 30 amps, which we weren't. (On a normal 30 amp service, our rig will run 2 ac units without issue.) Multiple times, we were receiving less than 100 volts, which shut our Bulldog EPO off.

We went to check at the office as we left for the dump station location. I was told that they could dump for you for $20 or, you could back into a full hook up site and dump for a $5 fee. We have been full time since November and this is the 1st time I've encountered needing to pay to dump when full hokkups weren't available. I double checked the website and couldn't find anything that mentioned a fee to dump.

The staff did credit us 1 night stay and we didn't end up having to pay to dump.

Long story short, definitely paid for the location to the river. We backed up onto the water and let down our ramp/patio for a nice view.

    Otahki Lake Cabins and Campground

    Word from the staff

This 1200 acre property used to be the beautiful Cherokee Ridge Girl Scout camp until it was sold in 2019. We have went through extensive renovations and development to bring this property to the public so that it can be enjoyed by our guests. River access and our private gravel/sand bars are available exclusively to our guests and have provided some of the most peaceful weekends imaginable.

We have everything from glamping tents right on the river bluff (photos attached) to 12 fully equipped cabins with hot tubs overlooking the 22 acre lake with a beach and activities (photos attached)

We have 4 Conestoga Wagons that are heated and air conditioned (see photos attached). They are the definition of glamping.

50 RV sites with picnic tables fire/grill pits with a variety of 30 and 50 amp pull-through and back-in sites. We offer float trips, rental boats for the lake, and rental golf carts to adventure around the park.

The park is going through endless development to continue to provide everyone with the most enjoyable and peaceful vacation possible.

Pinewoods Lake Rec Area — Mark Twain National Forest

    Easy access, private sites

Stopped here while passing through Missouri on a Saturday on 4th of July weekend and there were only 3 other campers when we arrived late afternoon. The sites are nice and big with picnic tables and fire rings, even a few “doubles” that would fit two big rigs side by side. The trail around the lake makes for a nice short walk with the dogs and it was surprisingly not terribly buggy for July. No hook-ups, which was the only downside since it was so hot and my Husky demands AC in the summer!

    Greenville - Lake Wappapello

    A great COE campground

If you've camped before at a COE campground you expect a quality experience. This one is no exception. It has paved drives and paved sites with a concrete pad for the fire ring and picnic table along with a hook for your lantern. They are also full hookups.

The place is very clean as well as the restrooms. There are plenty of things to do right from the campground including a paved bike trail into Greenville. We spent two days in early November and just about had the park to ourselves.

Cell service was adequate but not great.

    Redman Creek Recreation Area

    Best place to camp

This is a Army Corps of Engineers campground. We love it because it is quite and peaceful. The sites are well maintained with asphalted pads, fire pit, grill, camp light pole and picnic table. Best of all it is full hook up. Redman West traditionally has older campers (sites 1-40)but Redman east usually has more kids (sites 41-109) (currently under remodel 2023 season). Both sides are family friendly. We camp Redman West March to November.

    Redman Creek Recreation Area

Nice COE park, but not as nice as some others

On the smaller side for COE parks, and generally pretty nice. Not many real level sites. Bring plenty of blocks. Some sites are pretty close to each other. Water & electric at sites, although our faucet leaked a lot. ATT & Verizon both worked weakly but got out. Shower house was clean, used, but clean. Roads were easy to navigate & several big rigs had no issues. Right off the hiway, so easy in & out.

    Highway K

    Nice all around campground

We have stayed here a few times over the past couple of years and really enjoy that it’s it’s right on the Black River and that it is still within a couple of our drive from St. Louis. The campground is actually made up of two different campgrounds, East and West. The East is the older campground while the West campground is newer and geared more towards larger RVs and features bigger sites. Although we have camped at both with our 40 foot fifth wheel and as long as you pay attention to the trees you can still get around the East campground without any problems. The newer campground does not have as many trees so most of the sites are out in the open. The campground is just a few minutes away from Annapolis which has just about any of the basic needs that you might want. And again the proximity to river access is wonderful for enjoying a day at the river. Great campground!

    Holliday Landing Campground & Marina

    small quiet campground on lake

Campground was nice and quiet, spots were all maintained. only a few spots farthest away from lake had sewer, the others have water and electric. none of the spots are very far from the lake however. No wi-fi. showers were out of order half of the time. No store as it states on site, only and office but mostly no one there but it was holiday weekend. broken down marina sitting in ruins and what was left of dock didn’t seem too sturdy. Remnants of old gas pump but no marina gas. terrible fishing off of dock, you have to go out on lake. Several high speed boats passing by. Fairly far from any decent sized town but that is not bothersome as that is the point of camping. we enjoyed our stay but we’re disappointed about the showers, restrooms out of repair. Overall a decent campground just dated. grass and sites were kept up well. picnic table and fire pit at all sites.

Guide to Doniphan

What to do

Fishing access: Asher Creek Campground at Lake Wappapello offers excellent bank fishing and boat launch facilities for registered campers. "My group and I camped in two of the basic sites in Asher Creek campground and we couldn't get enough of the front-row lake view! The sites closest to the lake are very level, and everyone in the campground is only a short walk from the cleanest park restrooms I've ever seen," notes one visitor.

Trail riding: Fourche Creek RV Park and Riding Trails maintains dedicated horseback riding paths around the lake. A camper reports, "Hosts were so attentive and helpful-the grounds were so green and view of the woods and pond was so relaxing... we brought our own stall bedding and buckets but they provided a tack room, pitch fork, whellbarrow and shovel to help us clean up after our horses."

Water recreation: New Horizon RV Park provides boat-in access for campers and sits near prime fishing areas. A visitor confirms its "awesome location and good fishing!" The park also offers cabins and glamping options for those without RVs.

What campers like

Lakefront views: Asher Creek Campground earns praise for its waterfront setting. "All sites at Asher Creek loop have water views. Most of the sites have little to no shade during they day but as the sun goes down you have plenty of shade at the sites. The lake is great to swim in - very clean bottom and not slimy at all," according to one camper.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds in the Doniphan area maintain well-kept restrooms. One visitor to Asher Creek noted, "Restroom was emaculate. Clean park with a boat launch. Electric only spots and dispersed. Water and dump are on site."

Off-season solitude: RV camping near Doniphan provides quiet experiences outside peak season. A camper at Asher Creek observed, "On a Monday in July, I counted 2 other campers in the ridge campground," while another mentioned, "We typically camp just at the end of season and have this is our favorite place to camp. We always tent camp with minimal supplies."

What you should know

Weather considerations: Summer humidity requires climate control in RVs. "From April to September, you're gonna want electric so you can run AC (or at least a fan), Missouri humidity is not a joke," warns a camper at Asher Creek Campground.

Limited shade: Many campsites have minimal tree cover during daytime hours. One tent camper suggests, "If you're like me and are just doing basic tent camping, I'd recommend a pop-up canopy for the table area since there is not a lot of tree cover in those sites."

Reservation timing: Camelot RV Campground remains open year-round with 76 full-hookup sites, making it a reliable option when seasonal parks close. One reviewer notes it's "just off of hwy 67 very easy in and out. Full hook ups including cable. Clean and level sites."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose based on specific needs and season. A camper at Camelot notes, "The campground sits on a hill so the sites are terraced and there are mature trees everywhere. The trash bins were located up the hill from my site. Not a problem for me to access, but someone with mobility issues might find the location less than ideal."

Overnight considerations: Several RV parks near Doniphan serve well as stopovers. "We were just passing through for one night. Wish we had more time here," mentions one Camelot visitor, while another adds, "We did a 1 night stay passing through to St. Louis.
