    Sun Retreats Horn Lake

Clean and well maintained with lots of activities

This is a huge campground and the price for a spot was at least double what we would pay elsewhere (nearly $100). We weren’t able to get a campground at Tom Sawyer and the reviews were all over the place for the rest of the Memphis campgrounds that we decided to go ahead and splurge on this one.

This was our first Jellystone and I was shocked at how many campers the campground accommodated - there are RVs everywhere. Most of the amenities and services are located at the front of the campground and includes a store and propane, playground, dog run, pool, showers and laundry, gold mining station, and sports courts (basketball, Gaga ball, and basketball). Further back in the campground, was another playground and dog run and a really cute little lake.

We were staying off-season so there was no activities and they actually deflated the jumping pad, but my kids still had fun and I could see this campground either being a blast in the summer or being a nightmare because of too many people. While we were there, I saw almost no children and several of the camper sites looked like the guests were staying long-term. For a campground that is marketed towards families, the demographics were a bit strange.

That said, it was super clean, well-organized, the landscaping and sites were maintained, everyone was friendly. We got two loads of wash done and my husband said the showers looked good. There were some restaurants and a Walgreen that looked like they delivered to the campground. WiFi worked and they had cable tv.

We reserved a basic site, but for more money you could get a site with Adirondack patio furniture and there were plenty of cabins as well. We reserved same day online and they have a system for late check-ins.

I’m definitely giving Jellystone another go - but next time during the summer. I’m not sure whether this campground is a good base for exploring Memphis - I think if you had a car it would probably be fine as it’s only 20 minutes or so.

    T.O. Fuller State Park Campground

    Decent SP near South Memphis.

T.O. Fuller SP Is a decent campground situated 5 miles from Graceland and about 15 minutes (by car) from downtown Memphis. If you are concerned about staying in South Memphis, this state park is not for you. However, it is surprisingly decent compared to what you would assume based on its location.

TO fuller state park is expansive and has a state park feel to it. The campground is secluded and has 35-38 campsites. All campsites have 30/50 amp electric, water, picnic table, fire ring and trash hooks. There are no sewer hook ups, but there are two dump stations. This is helpful on busier weekends. The bathhouse is situated in the center of the campground and it has been updated. We did not use it and it was closed due to the pandemic. There is also an updated playground in the campground area that looks very nice. Many of the sites are level and there are a few pull through sites. Several large RVs and travel trailers were able to comfortably fit in these campsites.

There are several hiking trails, a swimming pool (in season), and a native American history Museum (Chulissa) that is very popular. Most of the facilities were closed, but we were able to hike and enjoyed it. The visitor center staff and Park Rangers were all helpful and very friendly. The visitor center has a number of state park items for purchase. If you are a person that collects patches, stickers, or clothing of the state park you visit visit, TO Fuller’s visitors center has everything you could need.

In summary, TO Fuller State Park is surprisingly beautiful for its location, but if you cannot get past its location then it is not a good place for you to try and stay. However, if its location doesn’t bother you, you’ll enjoy your weekend and a pretty state park.

    Tom Sawyer's RV Park

    Camp Along the Mississippi River

Tom Sawyer RV Park is located right along the Mississippi River. The entrance into the park takes you through a wooded area, which has beautiful scenery. Upon arrival they are doing contactless check in and have your car tag and park map located at the front office.

They have three areas to this campground: two are located on the river and one sits back into the trees with more shade. There is also 2 ponds located on site with fishing allowed. Sites are either concrete or gravel and mostly level. All sites are full hook up with 30/50 amp electric. They also have several bathhouses and laundry facilities, both which were clean.

We stayed in site 29 (concrete). We could see the river from our site, but it was a walk to get river side. Site had ample shade and was far enough apart from other campers. We also had cell service (ATT) and the park provides wifi.

Pros: •Clean campground •Spacious sites •Full hook ups with laundry facilities •WiFi included •Gorgeous views

Cons: •Poison Ivy •Ticks, mosquitoes, snakes, etc...are thick

    Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

    Hot, Remote, Bugs

Ok - so this campground is a few things.  Will detail the good/bad below as we saw it:

    Good

    1. This campground is super remote.  Like 20 minutes from downtown Memphis, but 0 bars of cell service.  Really nice for an escape, but hard if trying to work out of here.

    2. This campground is part of a HUUUUUUGE state park.  Like 10000 acres.

    3. Tons of outdoors activities in this state park.

    Bad

    1. No cell service.  Or Internet.  Or anything.  There is very small service for WIFI available at the visitor center, which is a 5min drive from the park.

    2. Bugs from April - October are pretty bad.  This is in a forest, so they are constantly around.

    3. Bath areas are old.  And full of mosquitos.  Would make sure you understand this before camping.

    4. No Full Hookups (state park).

Lady Luck Casino and RV Park

    Great find!

This casino RV park has all hook-ups, is very well-maintained, and our pull-through site was level. They have free laundry facilities and clean individual bathrooms with showers, ADA accessible with shower chairs. There are picnic tables and grills available nearby. Trash pickup offered daily between 8-9 am. No reservations, first come basis, we were second to arrive around 5pm and more came in later but there were spaces available next morning (they have a total of 18 pull-through and 9 back-in sites, concrete pads).

    Jackson RV Park

    Needs Assistance

    Fees:  Daily:  $40.00  Weekly $150.00  Monthly  $450.00

    Electric 30 - 50 amp

This is the only RV park in Jackson, Tennessee.  It is right off I 40 and it runs along side the interstate which will make it rather noisy with all the truck traffic.  This is a well established permanent mobile home park.  The RV's that are not long term are parked at the front of the park.  When you pull into the park you will need to drive through the park and back up the other lane and the sites are all pull thru.  There are full hook ups but I would make this a one night stand for me unless you need to live and work in the area.  Park needs some clean up and maintenance.  The RV's are sitting on top of each other.

    Tom Sawyer's RV Park

    Motorcycle Friendly & Free Laundry

Found this campsite on the Dyrt and was pleasantly surprised with the location and family friendly atmosphere. Right on the River but not swimable water. In an industrial park but felt very safe. Just a few minutes from the interstate.

The tent site is just a primitive grassy group area but had tons of shade from giant oak trees and is right next to the bathhouse.

Laundry is free on the second story of the bathhouse which was a wonderful treat.

The bathrooms weren’t awful but could use some TLC.

Tent sites do not get picnic tables. No fire rings.

Overall a decent night’s stay - whatever you do don’t forget your bug spray!

    Southaven RV Park

    Can’t beat the location

Located right off 55 at the first exit as you get into Mississippi. It’s 15-20 minutes from everything you want to do in the Memphis area like downtown or midtown. Groceries, gas, and other necessities are across the street. Mostly full timers here and everyone is friendly. It seems like the first pull through by the bathrooms and laundry is the transitory spot. Easy to get into, dry, and has a concrete patio. Not a ton of space between sites but definitely not the worst I’ve seen in smaller campgrounds like this. The people I spoke to in the office were awesome and very helpful. Had room to park the tow vehicle and the daily driver.

    Sun Retreats Horn Lake

    Fantastic campground

We were long term at this campground for 7 months. The staff was outstanding, the park was clean and well-kept, and the monthly rates were reasonable. We loved our stay here! We actually stayed from December 2020-July 2021.

Guide to Covington

RV camping near Covington, Tennessee provides convenient access to western Tennessee campgrounds within 1-hour driving distance. The region has elevations ranging from 250 to 400 feet above sea level with a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot summers and mild winters. Most campgrounds remain open year-round with summer temperatures frequently exceeding 90°F between June and September.

What to do

Explore historic sites: Fort Pillow State Historic Park requires careful navigation on narrow roads. According to one visitor to Joy-O RV Park, "We had business in Memphis and Jackson, this was a good in-between park" making it an ideal base for exploring regional attractions.

Visit Graceland: Campers staying at Graceland RV Park & Campground have direct access to Elvis Presley's home. A reviewer notes, "The campground is located adjacent to Graceland with a connecting gate for easy access," allowing visitors to walk directly to tours without relocating their vehicles.

Enjoy water activities: The Mississippi River offers boating and fishing opportunities. A camper at Tom Sawyer's RV Park shared, "Sunrise over the river was perfect. Watching the tug boats moving up and down the river all day and night was relaxing," highlighting the peaceful riverside setting.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Many parks offer concrete pads with room to spread out. At Midway RV Park, one military camper observed, "It is small and quiet. 2 very friendly camp hosts. Evon called us the day of arrival. Well maintained. Concrete pads."

Free amenities: Some parks include extras at no additional cost. A Tom Sawyer's RV Park visitor mentioned, "Clean restroom, free laundry and free WiFi. This is a campground we would like to stay at again," noting the value-added services that enhance the camping experience.

Security features: Many parks prioritize camper safety with monitored access. According to a reviewer at Graceland RV Park, "I felt completely safe at the camp ground. They have a 24-hour security guard at the entrance and you must sign-in to enter the property," providing peace of mind for travelers.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Mosquitoes can be problematic near water. A visitor to Agricenter RV Park noted its location within "Shelby Farms Park which is a 4,500 acres of lakes, bike and running trails, playgrounds and so much more," though summer visitors should bring insect repellent.

Facilities quality varies: Bathhouse conditions fluctuate between parks and seasons. A camper at Joy-O RV Park stated, "Facilities are very dated but functional," while another mentioned "gross showers that were air conditioned only from about 4 pm until 9 pm."

Reservation policies: Some parks operate on a first-come basis. A visitor to Lady Luck Casino RV Park reported, "No reservations, first come basis, we were second to arrive around 5pm and more came in later but there were spaces available next morning."

Tips for camping with families

Look for recreation options: Shelby Farms Park offers extensive outdoor activities. An Agricenter RV Park camper shared, "The park also has plenty of events to keep you entertained. And, there are bison!! Super close to Memphis and what the city and surrounding suburbs have to offer."

Consider unique dining experiences: Some campgrounds offer special meal arrangements. A Graceland RV Park visitor wrote, "The highlight of our stay here, however, was the opportunity to take a free pink Cadillac limo ride to Marlowe's for superb BBQ. Our children loved this opportunity."

Find playgrounds: Country View RV Park provides open spaces for children. A reviewer mentioned, "It's in a field so no frills... it was quiet and spacious," giving families room for outdoor activities away from busy areas.

Tips from RVers

Navigation awareness: Some access roads present challenges for large vehicles. A Tom Sawyer's RV Park camper detailed, "Holy heck the drive getting to this place is crazy- left off the interstate, through a shady part of Memphis, past all kinds of industry, across tracks and over a dike, down a curvy bumpy gravel road."

Site surfaces: Prepare for varying pad materials affecting leveling. A Country View RV Park visitor noted sites are "mostly level even though it's gravel," suggesting minimal setup time for stabilizing rigs.

Hookup reliability: Test connections upon arrival. One Midway RV Park reviewer advised, "Well kept, no laundry right now," indicating campers should verify which utilities are currently functional before settling in.
