    Pierz Park

Too many kids driving golf carts.

First the negatives. No internet, medium phone signal. The campsites are too small and too crowded. The adults let their young kids drive their cold carts and atvs back and forth from the campground to the beach all day long. I counted one particular one make 34 trips in less than 6 hours. I used to golf and I occasionally used a cart but usually I walked. Kids and young parents are way too lazy now, because it's a small campground and short walk to the beach from the farthest site. I think they do it for 2 reasons, they are bored, and they can. There is only one road in and out so there is constant traffic, and the road is gravel so prepare to eat dust. The sites aren't paved or even gravel, you park on the grass. Now for the positives. Some sites have 50 amp, most just 30 amp or less. Water hookups at most. No full hookups or dump site. There is a beach and swim area on Skunk Creek. A playground by the bathroom and showers. That building is clean, showers are free. Lots of shade from all the trees. Mosquitoes are few, flies plentiful. It is a quiet park after 10pm, but although they say closed after 8pm there was traffic all night long. Ask for a site in the back to avoid headlights shining on you all night long. Rates are $40/night for the pull through site we had w50 amp service. It has a few seasonal sites, all located at the rear. There is a golf course right next door across the creek. That is where the office is located. The town is small, only a gas station and small grocery store, so bring what you need. A Subway and nice drive-in are close by. Oh, the water is in me/my dogs opinion not for drinking. I wouldn't suggest weekends here unless you're into hearing every conversation your neighbors have or want to sleep in. Maybe the week days are better? They do allow leashed pets.

    Fish Lake Acres Campground

    Quiet, Lake Views

This campground is great especially when compared with state park camping. Full hookups available, quite a few pull through lots and close to the twin cities! No wifi, so make sure you've got decent cell service and hotspot if you need internet/wifi. Verizon gets ok coverage here, T-Mobile does too. Showers/bathhouses are clean and the hot water runs forever and not coin operated or push button like some others I've been to! Bonus! Good toilet paper in the bathrooms not the cheap stuff. The lake is literally out your door and they do have a small swimming beach and boat launch. MN Horse and Hunt club is about a mile or so up a trail access that is Almosy directly across from the camp entrance. There is an ATM there along with a bar and restaurant. Be prepared to hear gunshots regularly but it's not really bothersome unless you aren't prepared for it. The trail to the club is safe to walk though. The campground ONLY accepts cash so be sure to hit the ATM before you get here. They also charge $2 extra per dog if you have them. Nightly rate for the full hookup site I had was $32 with the dog. They charge .50 c per log for firewood. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The staff are really nice and laid back. It's a really nice little campground!

    Ham Lake Resort

Well Rounded RV Park and Campground

My partner and I scheduled a 3 day / 2 night stay in a new Vintage Cruiser RV for $39.99, in exchange for attending a presentation on private membership.

We checked in Wednesday evening, and the nicest staff I've ever met helped us acclimate to RV living. We are new to this game. They patiently described how to utilize the grey and black water tanks, as well as encouraged us to check-out the canoes, row boats, bikes, horseshoes, ladder golf and many other entertainment items - for FREE!

The map provided was accurate which made locating the cruiser a breeze. There were further instructions inside as well. The RV was immaculate. Provided for our use were all linens (a public very clean bath and shower was just across the road), dish soap, dish towels, paper towels, flat wear, plates, bowls, mugs and pans.

The campground has a couple of ponds, as well as access to Ham Lake where the watercraft is launched. There is a petting arena with goats, ponies, and a llama who gave my partner the stink eye, but fell in love with me rubbing the fence and giving me all googly eyes!

The clubhouse sells bundled wood, ice, snacks, cold drinks, ice cream and provides 24-hour fresh coffee. There is also a small resupply area, and gift shop.

There are pull-through sites, back ups, 50 and 30 amp hook ups, and tent sites, covered pavilions, picnic tables and fire pits.

The campground itself seems remote, secluded and peaceful, however, you are conveniently located to two well-stocked convenience stores, as well as Wal-Mart about 15 minutes away. It's also only about 45 minutes from the Minnesota Twin Cities.

One note: We visited in August and needed gallons of bug spray.

We very much enjoyed our get away!

    Ann Lake

    Rustic & Family Friendly

This is a great little rustic campground within an hour's drive of the Twin Cities! It has several potable water sources throughout the campground, but no running water for toilets or showers. There are several vault toilets. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring. You can buy firewood & ice at the Sand Dunes Stop gas station, just a 10 minutes drive away.

This is a first-come, first-served campground, so no reservations required. This does mean that there is a chance you won't be able to get a site, but I've only had that happen one time when I got there at 6pm on a Saturday. There are usually sites available.

I love going to this campground - it's family friendly, and there is a swimming beach a quick 3 minute drive away! The hiking trails aren't half bad, either! I love coming here to relax for a weekend, spend some time at the beach, and just enjoy nature. If you go in the early to mid summer, you'll also hear local whip-poor-wills serenade you to sleep.

Overall, 4 stars. The only downsides are no running water and no ice & firewood at the campground itself.

    Spirit of Ripley

    Small and family owned

Nice large grass pads, easily accessible for big rigs! Close to the lake(mom and I went for some bike rides around the lake) and public boat access. Each site had a picnic table and a fire ring provided. All sites have power, water, and sewer hook ups.

    Lebanon Hills Regional Park

    Friendly staff & quiet

Great location for easy access to mountain bike trails. Friendly staff. Clean facilities. Nice trail within the campground. Some sites are more shaded than others in the east loop so look at photos if you want shade. Sites that back up to the green space are very sunny. 87 is a great site! Plenty of space for a trailer or tent with a private “nook” for the fire pit.

    Lake Elmo County Park Reserve

    Great for the kiddos

For a County Park, Lake Elmo has an impressive list of amenities. Before we even get to the campsite let's mention the filtered swimming pond. This man made pond is a sandy bottom and surrounded by a nice sand beach. Large built in umbrellas are available for sun coverage and there is a concession stand and bathrooms with showers. And yes, as I mentioned the water is filtered! No gross goose poop or green algae to deal with! Next to the swim pond is a giant playground with fun for the big and little kids. Other amenities include archery, horse trails, paved and grass trails, camper spots, rustic spots and hike in camping spots. In winter the xc ski trails are lit for evening skiing. Or let's be honest early afternoon. It is Minnesota and the suns down by 4 In the Winter! They also have a newer Nordic center that's open all year round and includes a locker room with showers. The hike in camp spot we chose was on a small lake so it had a nice breeze and made it easy to bring a kayak or paddleboard and hop right in. There is also a boat launch for your larger toys! The trails in the park are quite impressive for its size. We enjoyed a 5 mile loop off the Nordic center and right past the camp spot. A picnic table and fire pit as well as nice flat tent pad were provided. If you're coming in from out of town then you're just a 5 minute drive from Woodbury and all the amenities you'd ever need but the park feels miles away from it all.

Guide to Monticello

Camping areas near Monticello, Minnesota offer access to the Mississippi and Rum rivers with camping seasons that generally run from May through October. The region features a mix of wooded and open sites with terrain that remains relatively flat throughout the camping areas. Water activities dominate the recreational landscape due to the numerous lakes and rivers within a 30-minute drive of the town.

What to do

River tubing on the Rum River: Country Camping Tent & RV Park on the Rum River provides organized tubing trips with shuttle service. "Great tubing and canoeing," notes visitor Rory T., while another camper explained the process: "They have a bus that takes you into town float back to the campground, love it."

Swimming at seasonal pools: Several campgrounds maintain heated swimming pools open from late May through early September. At Cokato Lake RV Resort, visitors appreciate the "inground, heated swimming pool" and "lake with beach." The resort also features "mini golf, pickleball, tennis, and an arcade room attached to the office."

Hiking woodland trails: The trail systems at regional parks connect camping areas to natural features. At Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park Campground, campers enjoy "really nice wide trails around the lake" that are "basically designed for cross-country skiing in the winter." Wildlife viewing opportunities abound as one camper noted: "This place had awesome trails and so many deer! It's like they were camping with us."

Fishing local waterways: Access to fishing spots varies by location. Most campgrounds with river or lake frontage offer shore fishing, though some require short walks to reach designated areas. Baker Campground provides "access to Lake Independence" with "great fishing" according to regular visitors.

What campers like

Spacious sites with shade options: Many campgrounds feature larger-than-average sites compared to state parks. At St. Cloud-Clearwater RV Park, campers appreciate the "absolutely beautiful campground with mature trees. Cedars, white oaks, hickory's and more." Some visitors choose specific camping zones for privacy: "We have a pop up so we parked on a grassy spot next to the cabins that backed up to a field. It was nice to be there instead of in the thick of the big camper section."

Clean facilities: Bathroom and shower buildings receive consistently positive reviews. At St. Cloud Campground & RV Park, visitors note that "the shower house was clean" and the campground itself is "well maintained." Another camper mentioned that "the facilities including 2 bathroom facilities" were among the highlights of their stay.

Family activities: On-site recreation options keep children entertained. Country Camping RV Park features "a heated pool, splash pad area, BIG playground area, indoor game room" and "HUGE sites" according to one reviewer. Another visitor added that the campground is "great for everyone" and they "would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to having a great time camping."

Convenience to metro areas: The region's proximity to Minneapolis makes it suitable for weekend getaways. One camper called Baker Campground "a gem so very close to the Twin Cities" with "great fishing, playground, swimming, and biking trails very nearby" that kept children "as busy as they wanted to be."

What you should know

Seasonal operation limitations: Most rv sites near Monticello, Minnesota close between mid-October and early May due to weather conditions. Opening dates typically range from late April to early May depending on spring conditions. Baker Campground specifies its season as "Apr 30 - Oct 20" while Country Camping RV Park operates from "May 1 - Oct 1."

Variable cell service quality: Connectivity differs significantly by location and carrier. While the existing description notes Verizon coverage, other carriers may have spotty service particularly in river valley locations. Limited WiFi is available at some campgrounds but bandwidth issues occur during peak periods. At St. Cloud Campground, one camper reported it was "the worst wifi of about 15 campgrounds we've been to on our trip this year. They warned us it was slow, but we couldn't even connect to it from our site."

Weekend crowds: Popular campgrounds fill quickly for summer weekends. Reservations should be made 2-3 months in advance for prime summer dates. Some visitors noted that at Country Camping Tent & RV Park, it's "quiet during the week and busy on the weekends."

Limited boondocking options: Traditional dispersed camping is not readily available near Monticello. The closest options require driving approximately 45-60 minutes to state forest lands. Overnight parking at Love's RV Hookup provides a basic alternative with "electric hookups" and is "convenient location right off I94 and HWY 23" for travelers needing a simple overnight spot.

Tips for camping with families

Recreation program scheduling: Some campgrounds offer organized weekend activities for children. At St. Cloud-Clearwater RV Park, families enjoy "pool, pool table, soccer table, mini golf, swing set, clubhouse, 3 wheel bike racing, and water balloons wars." Parents appreciate that "the birds are singing and so are the kids because this place has so much to do for them."

Swimming options beyond pools: Natural swimming areas provide alternatives to campground pools. Baker Campground features "2 swimming beaches: 1 for the campground and one for all of the day visitors." Rental equipment is available as "you can rent canoes, paddle boats and SUP boards" at some locations.

Biking-friendly campgrounds: Paved trails connect camping areas to recreation spots. At Baker Campground - Baker Park Reserve, families enjoy "a nice 6+ mile biking trail that connects to others, so bring the bikes." Another visitor noted it has "a lot of paved bike trails" making it ideal for family cycling outings.

Playground proximity: Consider site location relative to play areas. At St. Cloud Campground, families appreciate access to "playground, volleyball court, dog walking area, baseball field, a lodge with games and a store." Campsites furthest from these amenities offer more quiet but require longer walks with children.

Tips from RVers

Site surface variations: RV sites near Monticello, Minnesota feature different leveling challenges by campground. At RiversEdge RV Park, campers appreciate the "concrete patios on every lot and crushed granite streets and drives" which make leveling easier. These improved surfaces remain stable during rain events compared to grassy areas at other campgrounds.

Electric service limitations: Power demands during peak summer heat can strain electrical systems. When temperatures exceed 90°F and humidity is high, some campers report voltage drops. One visitor at Country Camping "had one issue with power dropping so we had to pull the surge protector off" but noted it was "very hot and humid so everyone was running AC to the max."

Dump station availability: Not all campgrounds offer sewer hookups at individual sites. St. Cloud Campground provides "big rig access with electric, water, and sewer hookups" while others may only have a central dump station with limited capacity during peak checkout times.

Winter camping options: For cold-weather RVing, choices are extremely limited. Love's RV Hookup remains "still open in the winter" with "convenient location" and basic amenities. One camper noted it serves as "a great option for a stop halfway through a trip" with "clean bathrooms in Love's, Hardee's for food" and fuel available on-site.
