Best Campgrounds near Nunica, MI

Camping options near Nunica, Michigan include a mix of developed state parks and private campgrounds spanning both Lake Michigan shoreline and inland areas. Hoffmaster State Park Campground in Muskegon offers tent, RV, and cabin camping with amenities including electric hookups, drinking water, and shower facilities. The Allendale-West Grand Rapids KOA provides family-friendly camping approximately 15 miles southeast of Nunica with tent and RV sites in a wooded setting. Grand Haven State Park Campground and Muskegon State Park also feature lakefront camping within 20 miles of Nunica, giving campers access to beaches and water recreation.

Most developed campgrounds in the Nunica area operate seasonally, with peak availability from May through September, though some remain open year-round. Grand Haven State Park specifically operates from April 1 to October 30, while several private campgrounds like the Allendale KOA stay open throughout the year. Reservations are strongly recommended during summer months when waterfront sites fill quickly. Winter camping options are limited primarily to year-round facilities with appropriate infrastructure. A visitor noted that "the staff is very friendly and helpful. There are activities for young and old and everyone in between. The showers are clean and spacious."

Campground experiences in the Nunica region vary significantly between lakefront and inland locations. Lake Michigan campgrounds like Grand Haven State Park offer beach access and water views but tend to be more crowded during peak season. Inland campgrounds such as Allendale KOA provide more wooded settings with family amenities including pools, playgrounds, and organized activities. Several campers highlighted the recreational opportunities for children at these mixed-use campgrounds. As one review mentioned, "We have two girls of the age of five so the pool, the hayride, the night hayride, two parks, jump pad, and feeding the goats kept them busy." Water-based activities remain the primary draw for most visitors, with many campgrounds offering boat launches, fishing access, or proximity to swimming areas.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

    Great tent camping destination

We really enjoyed our two nights tent camping at Kal Haven Outpost! The management is great, and the restrooms are very clean and the sites were really well designed. We love the wooded camping sites that we used in the four of us. Had a great time. We brought our bikes and use the trail for several miles. It was so peaceful and relaxing, and a great way to get away.

    Drews Country Camping

    Rustic Backyard Camping Charm

This is a sweet little family-owned park just outside Holland with about 30 grassy sites that feel more like someone’s big backyard than an actual campground. The place has been around since 1981, and while you’ll notice some older RVs parked around the edges and a slightly dumpy vibe overall, it’s still cared for with pride with fairly clean restrooms (in a building that looks like it was built in the 1930s), a small playground where the boys burned off energy, and a pool that (full disclosure) sits right up front near the highway so it feels a bit awkward, but still fun on a hot day. Our boys made fast friends, turning a simple game of tag into a neighborhood adventure before we strolled into town for cones at the Polka Dot Ice Cream Parlor and a sunset walk along 8th Street. I’d recommend Drew’s to families for its homey feel, fairly well-maintained facilities despite the vintage look, and the friendly mix of full-timers and travel-campers that keeps things relaxed and welcoming.

    Fisherman's Landing & Campground

Classic Michigan Sunsets with Lakefront Views

Nestled along the shores of Muskegon Lake, Fisherman’s Landing Launch & Campground hums with the easy rhythm of boats, endless laughter and evening campfires over s’mores. It’s a city-run spot with around a hundred sites, a marina close at hand and the kind of well-worn facilities that feel lived-in but cared for with clean restrooms, warm showers and a big playground that kept the boys busy while my husband wrestled with the fishing rods. We spent sunset on the dock, toes trailing in the water as the boys skipped stones and tried to out-cheer one another. I’d recommend Fisherman’s Landing to families who appreciate a laid-back lakeside stay, friendly folks and those golden Michigan summer evenings that end with the smell of water and woodsmoke.

Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park Campground

Lakeshore Campground at Muskegon State Park

Staying in the north loop of the Lakeshore campground. Sites were level and shaded by mature trees. Road is a bit narrow which made backing out travel trailer in a bit tricky, not impossible. Family friendly campground that is a couple hundred feet away from Lake Michigan. Will definitely come back.

    Sawkaw Lake

Doesn't exist and says "no camping"

We went down the path and it says to make it right when there's no road that goes to the right. We drove three and a half hours to get here and now we've got to figure out where we're going to stay for the night. And the only spot that looked like a campable spot says no camping. There's a stake in the ground that says it.

    Nichols Lake South Campground

Needs to maintain standards of operation

Facility at Office quite nice. Camp host was running his generator all night long. Women routinely take their dogs with them into the restroom. We’re not talking about outhouses but flush toilet bathroom with shower.

Guide to Nunica

Camping sites near Nunica, Michigan range from wooded inland properties to waterfront locations along the Grand River and Lake Michigan. Average summer temperatures reach 80°F with cooler spring and fall temperatures in the mid-50s to 60s. Many campgrounds in the Nunica area feature sandy soils with mixed hardwood and pine forests, creating natural drainage during Michigan's rainy periods.

What to do

Hiking trail exploration: At Hoffmaster State Park Campground, trails wind through 1,200 acres of dunes and forest. "My favorite part of this campground was the trails. In addition to several trails within the campground, many more can be accessed in the state park, which contains over ten miles of trails in its 1,200 acres," notes reviewer Shelly B.

Water-based activities: Lake Sch-Nepp-A-Ho Family Campground offers fishing without a license since the lake is privately owned. "They had great fishing. We caught a lot of bass, bluegill, crappie and even a catfish. All catch and release. Lake is privately owned so no need for a fishing license," shares Clint.

Winter recreation: Winter camping options include Muskegon State Park which maintains a winter sports complex. "Across the road is the Winter complex, sledding, skating, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and luge course. Our kids had a blast here, they have tons of bonfire pits as well," reports Melissa M.

What campers like

Beach access: Grand Haven State Park Campground offers direct beach access. "This is a cool campground to come hang out at one of the most beautiful beaches in Michigan, and provides the unique experience of actually camping ON the beach, which is something you don't get to do with 95% of the campgrounds on Michigan's coast," says Ryan L T.

Riverside camping: Steamboat Park Campground provides river views with unique features. "Beautiful to drink your morning coffee by the water! They have a small but well maintained pool and playground for the kids. Their shower and laundry facilities are bright and clean," shares Allison H.

Woodsy settings: Shaded campsites provide relief from summer heat. "Sites are fairly wooded (lots of pine trees) and not too crowded. The owners are super friendly - I love how the campground rules are written humorously," notes Deb M. about Allendale-West Grand Rapids KOA.

What you should know

Alcohol restrictions: Several state parks prohibit alcohol consumption. At Muskegon State Park Campground, "Alcohol is NOT allowed and is posted," according to Kathie M. Other reviewers confirm this policy extends to multiple state parks in the region.

Reservation timing: For popular lakefront campgrounds, book early. "This campground is EXTREMELY hard to get into on the weekends. If you are planning a trip to Grand Haven State Park, be sure to log onto the State Reservation site six months to the date that you want to camp," advises Stephanie C.

Early arrival fees: Some private campgrounds charge for early arrival. One camper noted: "Make sure you do not arrive before 2:00PM, as they require a $10 early registration fee. If you decide not to pay, you'll be directed to overflow parking where you can loiter until 2:00."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Pioneer County Park offers family-oriented amenities. "Every year we go here with our whole family! We love the group camping area. Multiple bathrooms. Right on Lake Michigan. Great place to spend time with the family," explains Jamie M.

Swimming options: Choose campgrounds with beach access or pools. "We loved this campground! Perfect place to camp and hangout. So many activities for EVERYONE. They even have doggy play pens for the pups where you can let them roam off-leash," shares Magy C. about Allendale-West Grand Rapids KOA.

Playground access: Many campgrounds feature playgrounds. "Lake is perfect for boating, fishing and swimming. We've really enjoyed our time here and how friendly everyone is. Seriously impressed with how clean the facilities are (showers/bathrooms)," says Lisa B. about Lake Sch-Nepp-A-Ho.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Beach Campground — Holland State Park, choose sites strategically. "The best campsite is 348. This site gives you a good view of the beach outside your rig. Other good campsites are 347 & 349, but your door faces away from the beach," advises Cynthia K.

Lakefront considerations: Beachfront sites may experience strong winds. "Some sites towards the northern section of the park have great views of Lake Michigan but be warned that strong winds can come off the lake and really shake your RV," notes Nancy W. about Grand Haven State Park.

Utility placement: Check utility locations when reserving. "Utilities are at the very back of the site so you may need an extension for your sewer hose," warns a camper about Holland State Park. This is common at many Michigan state park campgrounds.
