Fayette State Park Campground welcomes campers with pets in both cabin and tent sites throughout its seasonal operation from mid-April to mid-November. The campground maintains clean facilities with fire rings and picnic tables at each site while offering electric hookups for campers with pets. Nearby, BayRidge RV Park provides full hookup sites with water, electric, and sewer connections for pet owners camping in RVs, featuring large gravel sites with shade trees and ample space between most sites. Indian Lake State Park South Campground also accommodates pets in tent sites, RV spots, cabins and glamping options. Most pet-friendly campgrounds in the area require dogs to be leashed when outside vehicles or camping units, though leash length requirements vary by location. Campsites are generally spacious enough for pet owners to set up comfortable areas for their dogs, with most campgrounds featuring dirt or gravel surfaces that work well for securing pet stakes or tie-outs.

Dog owners should note the seasonal mosquito populations at several campgrounds in the Nahma region, particularly at Flowing Well Campground where insects can be extremely persistent during summer months. Trails connecting Fayette State Park Campground to the historic ghost town and nearby beaches provide excellent walking opportunities for leashed dogs. Access to Lake Michigan shorelines varies by campground, with some offering direct access to beaches while others have rocky shorelines or steeper banks. The Sturgeon River runs behind Flowing Well Campground but has difficult access due to steep banks. Visitors camping with pets should bring plenty of water for both themselves and their animals, especially during summer months when temperatures can rise. The isolated nature of many of these campgrounds means limited cell service and fewer nearby services, so pet owners should pack all necessary supplies for their animals including food, medications, waste bags, and portable water bowls.

      O. B. Fuller Campground

On the shores of Lake Michigan

You could drive by and miss this little gem. Beautifully kept up county park with clean shower house. Pet friendly, they even have a hitching post for your pet while visiting the bathrooms. On site hosts.

All sites are within a short walking distance of the beach and some are right on the beach. Site L1 had a good mix of beach and woods. Near the beach is a small playground for the kids.

      Great lakeside camping

This is a great lakeside campsite just outside of Manistique. There is a main bathroom area with showers. Good shallow water to swim (and watch the beautiful sunset) but a little difficult to fish. Staff is friendly. They even do weekly events such as "Traveling Trivia" for kids. Pet friendly too!

      Love Love Love

My family and I have been coming here for years!!!!! The campground is big and beautiful! Every campsite has a picnic table and fire pit; the Yurts and cabins have chairs. The Yurts, cabins, and bathrooms are clean! The staff is friendly! It is pet friendly. It is located near the water and has many trails to hike! Love this place, especially in October with the leaves changing and the festivals around town!!!!!

Island Resort and Casino RV Park

Basic RV park with free shuttle to the casino

We were in Site# 14. We had electric/water with a paved pull-through. We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep.
The site was easy to level but the wheels of our motor home were off of the ground.

Check-in is at the hotel. The RV park is not visible from the hotel (it’s back in the woods). There is a phone at the shower house that can be used to request a free shuttle to the casino.

Our site was not shaded with limited trees. This was a smaller lot with our neighbors fairly close.

The lot comes with a picnic table and fire ring.

There was not any WiFi (we used our Starlink). They do not offer Cable TV.

There is not a community outdoor kitchen or community fire pit.

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster.

They do have an indoor Swimming pool at the hotel with a sauna and steam shower.

There is not a Playground. There are not any additional play areas like Bocce ball, shuffleboard, basketball sport court, horseshoe, or volleyball courts.

They have a general store in the parking lot of the casino where you can also get gas.

There are restaurants on site in the hotel as well as a spa. The closest big town with stores is Escanaba (about 20 minutes away).

This is solely an RV park. They do not have any cabins to rent or any tent areas.

They have one shower house. The shower house has individual showers (toilets & sinks are on opposite side of shower house).

The laundry facility is located at the BP gas station (located in the parking lot of the casino/hotel). It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine. It is approximately $2 to wash and $2 to dry a load.

They do not have a fenced in dog park. There are areas to walk dogs.

Bugs did not seem to be an issue.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are to visit the Sandy Point Lighthouse or Ludington Park in Escanaba.

The casino is smoke-free. It states that the tables are open from 10am to 2am. Not all tables are available though (for instance, roulette wasn’t always available and if they did open up the one roulette table, it wasn’t until 6 or 7pm). The slot machine options are abundant.

      Mowe Lake Dispersed Campsite

      3 is a crowd

Only 2 sites, and they need to be reserved, according to the ass who told me. Both occupied by people with pets, which I don't mind but is supposedly not allowed. 2 stars for the view.

      Wagon Trail Campground

      Best Campground Ever

This is probably the nicest, most well run campground we have ever stayed at. The staff is friendly and welcoming, they are pet friendly, and their sites are spacious and private - unlike so many other campgrounds we visit.

While staying here, you’re a short walk to a great bakery and restaurant. Additionally, you can bring your gear and hike the trails just 5 minutes away at the state park.

Rates are very reasonable and the bathrooms are the best we’ve seen at any campground.

This place can’t get much better...

      Little Bay De Noc

      Beautiful destination

Little Bay De Noc, Lake Michigan access with a pier. Only a few campsites, but includes group fire pit, playground and proximity to Pictured Rocks, 1 hour. Lots of hiking and great motorized non-motorized off-road trails.

      Northland Outfitters

Isolated, but not quiet. Disconnected. Fun and friendly.

Stayed here for 4 nights early July 2020. Social distancing had some sinks and urinals turned off. Seemed super clean. 4-6 tent only spots are in pretty good shade. All sites had at least water and electricity. Swingset and covered sandbox for kids. Volleyball net. I saw dogs and cats; we brought 1 dog.

Cell coverage (AT&T for my family, Verizon for my friends) was pretty hit or miss at 0-2 bars at any given time. I could sometimes stream audio for an hour or two. Other times, it wouldn't do anything. Wifi was available, but it wasn't any more reliable than cell service down in the tent area. Service wasn't normal until hitting either of the east-west roads at the north and south sides of the UP that run along Superior and Michigan, ~8-10 miles north or south of the campground. We like limited to no signal, but realize some count on it, so try to always include it in reviews.

Campground was pretty busy and the internal noise levels were fine, but you could hear vehicles (possibly cars as well as ATVs) racing off grounds in the night. I'm a very deep sleeper, so this didn't bother me, but I did hear it when I was awake for my nightly jaunt to the potty. My buddy mentioned it kept him awake for a while.

Went tubing with a launch from the grounds and got picked up by staff about half to 3/4s of a mile down river. My guests paid, so not sure how much, but perfectly nice little break from the heat for an hour.

~20-5 minutes to closest spots to hit the beach, both of which were about 10 degrees cooler than the campground.

      Portage Bay State Forest Campground

Great Lake sites! A great destination for relaxation!

Portage Bay State Forest Campground sits on a little peninsula just outside the Shingleton State Forest Area south of HWY 2 in the Michigan Upper Peninsula. This campground is not hard to find but it is a drive away from the main road.  As you head further into the forest and closer to the campground the road narrows.  There is still  room to drive your RV to the campground but be cautious as some traffic can be coming from the opposite direction so pay attention and be courteous to other drivers.

As you enter the campground you will enter from the South entering on the West end of the looping around to the East shore where the 23 available campsites sit.  All sites sit on the shore but some are closer to the shore than others and access to Lake Michigan is more accessible on some sites compared to others. Some sit directly on the lake and some have hills blocking the view, but you can set your tent up on the hill for a spectacular view. Having the hill on your site does help cut down on the cool breeze that can come off the lake. You can tent or RV on these sites and the sites are rather large offering you a variety of camp set up!

Pit toilets are the only toilets available.  There are a couple walking trails, nothing difficult or long but they offer beautiful scenery and gorgeous walks in the woods and to the lake.

This is a rustic campground and available by walk-in or drive-in only.  People that camp here like to keep things quiet!  I am not saying that it is not kid friendly but lacking amenities and being a good distance from any town you might want to reconsider if you have young ones.  There are some small towns on the peninsula to pick up some necessities but the nearest town of any size is almost an hour away in Manistique.

    Guide to Nahma

The Garden Peninsula area surrounding Nahma offers a unique Great Lakes camping environment with a mix of limestone bedrock formations and dense forests. Water levels in Lake Michigan near Nahma can fluctuate seasonally, with recent years showing higher-than-average levels affecting some campsite access. Most campgrounds maintain seasonal operations with peak availability from May through September when temperatures average 65-75°F during the day.

    What to do

Historic exploration at night: Fayette State Park Campground offers access to the townsite after dark. "When you camp here you can visit the townsite at night. I'm a photographer and i love the challenge of taking night pictures! I love the history here," shares Brianne M.

Fishing opportunities: The waters near Little Bay De Noc campground provide diverse fishing options. "Good walleye, panfish, and bass fishing spot. Peninsula Point Lighthouse is a great little area attraction to check out," notes one reviewer. This campground sits on Little Bay De Noc with direct water access.

Swimming and relaxation: Summer visitors can enjoy the sandy beaches at Camp Seven Lake Campground. "We enjoyed the beach at this clean and quiet campground," says Kay K. The lake features clear, shallow water ideal for families with children.

    What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many campers appreciate the roominess at Indian Lake State Park South Campground. "The sites were very large! There are three bath houses and a pavilion. The water is so nice! We used the boat launch and had no issues at all," reports Stephanie C.

Lake access: Direct water access ranks high on camper preferences. "Nice tent site with a lovely view of the lake. The beach area is nice for wading, but the water was a little chilly in June. The bathrooms are clean and the showers are free!" says Emily M. about Gladstone Bay Campground.

Secluded camping: For those seeking more isolated experiences, Portage Bay offers remarkable privacy. "Still the best most secluded place, fishing was excellent," states Brian H. Most visitors note the campground's distance from main roads contributes to its peaceful atmosphere.

    What you should know

Mosquito preparations: Bug protection is essential, particularly at certain campgrounds. "Holy mosquitos!!! The sites were awesome!!! We were so excited when we drove up. Spacious, secluded, just gorgeous. Until we stepped out of our vehicle. We were instantly swarmed by mosquitoes," warns Sue P. about Flowing Well Campground.

Limited connectivity: Cell service varies significantly across dog friendly campgrounds near Nahma. "Zero cell service on Verizon and although free WiFi was offered, it was weak and we often had to reconnect," notes Lee D. about BayRidge RV Park. Many campgrounds in the region have minimal or no service.

Site leveling challenges: Several campgrounds require additional equipment for proper setup. "Have plenty of levelling equipment available!! Some are very level, some are not level at all. We were in spot 32 and 4" laterally and 19" longitudinally out of level to start with," advises Alan B.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach activities: Manistique Lakeshore Campground offers family-friendly amenities. "I loved coming here. We tent camp and stayed in spot 1 and had great privacy being so close to the office. They had complimentary bikes you could use, fire wood and ice for sale, very very clean bathrooms," shares Alyssa C.

Educational opportunities: Historic sites provide learning experiences. "The historical site was a great way to spend a couple hours," mentions Cory W. about Fayette State Park. Most historic sites near pet-friendly campgrounds offer self-guided tours suitable for school-aged children.

Water safety: Lake Michigan can experience rapidly changing conditions. "The cove is several miles across and shallow. In late June the water was swim-ably warm," notes John G. Parents should check water conditions daily and maintain close supervision.

    Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: For RVers needing complete amenities, BayRidge RV Park offers comprehensive services. "Very quiet and peaceful. Very clean facilities. Only one washer and dryer. Well maintained although we never saw anyone in the office, but they'll call you back," shares Alan B.

Road conditions: Some campgrounds have challenging access roads. "7 miles down a road that quickly shrinks to a one lane dirt and gravel road you will find a beautiful campground stretching out along the lakeshore," warns Art S. about Portage Bay. Larger rigs should verify access before booking.

Seasonal considerations: Water systems typically shut down in mid-October. "FYI bathrooms, shower facility, water drops, and water dumpsite closes annually for winterization around Oct. 21. Keep this in mind when booking!" advises Rob at Fayette Historic State Park.
