Island Resort and Casino RV Park

Basic RV park with free shuttle to the casino

We were in Site# 14. We had electric/water with a paved pull-through. We travel towing a 14 foot trailer and were able to fit both in our pull through site along with my jeep.
The site was easy to level but the wheels of our motor home were off of the ground.

Check-in is at the hotel. The RV park is not visible from the hotel (it’s back in the woods). There is a phone at the shower house that can be used to request a free shuttle to the casino.

Our site was not shaded with limited trees. This was a smaller lot with our neighbors fairly close.

The lot comes with a picnic table and fire ring.

There was not any WiFi (we used our Starlink). They do not offer Cable TV.

There is not a community outdoor kitchen or community fire pit.

They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster.

They do have an indoor Swimming pool at the hotel with a sauna and steam shower.

There is not a Playground. There are not any additional play areas like Bocce ball, shuffleboard, basketball sport court, horseshoe, or volleyball courts.

They have a general store in the parking lot of the casino where you can also get gas.

There are restaurants on site in the hotel as well as a spa. The closest big town with stores is Escanaba (about 20 minutes away).

This is solely an RV park. They do not have any cabins to rent or any tent areas.

They have one shower house. The shower house has individual showers (toilets & sinks are on opposite side of shower house).

The laundry facility is located at the BP gas station (located in the parking lot of the casino/hotel). It is a cash only facility, but they have a change machine. It is approximately $2 to wash and $2 to dry a load.

They do not have a fenced in dog park. There are areas to walk dogs.

Bugs did not seem to be an issue.

Some fun things to do outside of the campground are to visit the Sandy Point Lighthouse or Ludington Park in Escanaba.

The casino is smoke-free. It states that the tables are open from 10am to 2am. Not all tables are available though (for instance, roulette wasn’t always available and if they did open up the one roulette table, it wasn’t until 6 or 7pm). The slot machine options are abundant.

    Little Bay De Noc

    AbsolutelyBeautiful

We were by ourselves on the first loop site #6. Short walk to sandy beach. (Less than 25-30Yds). Deer in camp when we arrived. $21/night. 1/2 price for those with senior National park pass. Nice fire ring with grill and picnic table. About 1/3 of the 38 sites are first come, rest reservable. Only 2 other campers in area end of September. Could fish, swim or do boating from the site. Need gen if you want electric. No dump station but private campgrounds close and perhaps would let you dump for a fee. Several trails. Lighthouse at end of peninsula about 11 mi away. Fairly level sites. Tent pads with pine needles. Big rigs likely would fit but very narrow and tight squeeze. Length and slides not an issue as sites are large.

    Munising Tourist Park Campground

Nice campground, but it can't handle all the electrical draw for every site

This is a busy campground right on Munising Bay on Lake Superior. Reservations for the busy season need to be made months in advance, and even reserving 6 months before our arrival date, we got the last spot. We have a 22 foot travel trailer, so we can fit onto most any site, but this campground draws some huge rigs pulled by tractor trailers.

The people in the office are great. The beach on the bay is spectacular. Overall nice campground at a very good price.

But this is an older campground, and the electrical system can't handle the power draw from the big rigs. People at the end of the power line - beware! Bring your surge protector to protect your electrical system.

We were fine until day 3 where the temps hit 88 degrees, and the big rigs were running their double air conditioners, while we were running just our fridge, water heater and a fan. Draws about 6 amps. We didn't have enough power coming to our site even for that, and the surge protector shut everything down. Thank goodness it did it's job and protected the electrical system on the trailer. At one point the power coming into the site was only 98 instead of 120ish.

So while the big boys further up the line were running 2 air conditioners, we weren't getting enough power to run a water heater, fridge and a fan. We had to put our water heater and fridge onto propane and do without even a fan in 88 degree heat. Thank goodness our fridge and water heater can run on propane, and the lights work on DC, but the fan runs on 110, so it didn't work.

The people in the office were apologetic, and they said we should have power when it cools down and there aren't so many air conditioners running. That was small comfort when we were paying for a 50 amp site for our 30 amp trailer, and we couldn't even run a fan. At least the surge protector kept us from damaging the trailer electrical system - we hope!

    O. B. Fuller Campground

On the shores of Lake Michigan

You could drive by and miss this little gem. Beautifully kept up county park with clean shower house. Pet friendly, they even have a hitching post for your pet while visiting the bathrooms. On site hosts.

All sites are within a short walking distance of the beach and some are right on the beach. Site L1 had a good mix of beach and woods. Near the beach is a small playground for the kids.

    Manistique Lakeshore Campground

    Amazing small campground

There are a limited number of sites here, 6 for tents and the rest for RVs. We have a travel trailer and this was the easiest set up we’ve ever had. Each site has a long, paved, level pad for your camper and vehicle. The electric and water post is very nice organized. Sewer available at all electric sites. Tons of big rigs here bc the spots are spaced appropriately and easy to maneuver. Bathrooms and showers are the nicest I e ever used at a campground. But the jewel are the lake front campsites. We literally walked out our door to the sand beach. Our fire pit was located so we could chill and watch the lake while the kids jumped the waves in the long shallow sandy areas. Dunes are also behind some sites, which is fun for the kids to roll around in. Super dog friendly. Close to grocery and restaurants if needed, but still feel isolated despite the proximity to the highway. The sounds of the waves on the lake put us to sleep at night. A perfect camping paradise. The only downside is that this campground is always booked, so it’s hard to get a reservation. We booked in December for the following June, and all lakefront spots were booked already. A last minute cancellation meant we could snag the lakefront spot, and it’s amazing. Don’t hesitate if there’s a spot open, just book it!

    Fayette State Park Campground

    Beautiful State Park

Isolated, quiet park on Lake Michigan. Nicely spaced and shaded sites. Some level, many not so great. Big fire rings. Picnic tables. Electric hookups only. Bath and shower facilities very new and nice. Spotty phone service. Historic ghost town within walking distance of the campground. Many buildings open during the day with displays of what life was like when the town was occupied. Great history lesson and very interesting. Although town buildings were locked at night, you could still walk the streets. Spooky but fun! Sunsets on the lake are spectacular. Many hiking trails around the park. Not strenuous and fairly short. However, trails could use better markings.

    O. B. Fuller Campground

    Quiet, clean

Nice little county campground on lake Michigan. Sandy Beach. Clean bathrooms and showers, and a small laundry facility. Electric and water on each site. Dump station is available for registered campers. Sites are large, not crowded. Mixture of short term campers and long term locals. On site host, not a party spot.

    Wagon Trail Campground

    Greaet family campground

General: Pride of ownership is evident throughout the campground and there are many different types of accommodations: tent, electric and water, (including some classified as prime), full hook-up, cabins, and yurts. There are also seasonal sites and travel trailer rentals. This campground was as busy as I would expect for Door County in the summer. We checked in at the well-staffed office (open until 9 pm) at which time our site was assigned.

Site Quality/Facilities: Since there are so many different kinds of sites, they vary greatly. Our non-hookup site (#104) had an L-shaped driveway which was just a bit awkward to back our campervan into but not impossible. This site would not have been suitable for a large RV. Some of the tent sites in this loop (#111-113) were called “hideaway” tent sites as they had very long driveways and more privacy. Many of the sites are wooded and there is varying separation between sites but more than adequate. The premium sites have the most privacy and many of these have no one behind them.

Bathhouse: There are two bathhouses, and each is closed for a two-hour period each day. They were immaculate (possibly the cleanest campground bathrooms I have ever seen!). The shower, while a bit on the small side, had nice hot water and plenty of hooks to hang clothes and toiletries. They were clean.

Activities/Amenities: The campground itself has much to offer: playground, recreation area with volleyball net, laundry, dishwashing station, fish cleaning station, recreation room with pool table and arcade games, lounge with fireplace, couches, and books, a camp store, and doggie stations. A couple of hiking trails lead from the campground, including one to Grandma’s Swedish Bakery (highly recommend at least one visit). Nearby kayak and SUP rentals. There is much to do in Door County for active and less active pursuits; this campground is located on the quiet side of the peninsula, but it does not take long to drive to other activities.

This is not our typical type of campground. We used to live within two hours of the northern part of the Door Peninsula, so we only took day trips here; camping here is new to us but we are enjoying exploring many different options.

What you should know

Leveling challenges: Some sites require significant leveling equipment. A visitor at Indian Lake RV Resort and Campground notes "Campground is older and I understand it was purchased a year ago. Some of the spaces are a little tight but managable."

Limited facilities: Amenities vary widely between campgrounds. "There is a coin laundry facility on site. There is also a bar/grill, open year-round Wednesdays-Sundays from 12-8. You can walk there from the campground," reports a BayRidge RV Park camper.

Site availability: Dispersed camping options have limited sites. A camper at Peninsula Point Lighthouse Access Road warns, "I would have rated 5 stars if there were more sites available, but if you manage to snag one of the permitted ones, lucky you!"

Connectivity issues: Cell coverage varies throughout the region. "There was zero cell service on Verizon and although free WiFi was offered, it was weak and we often had to reconnect," reports a BayRidge RV Park visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access options: Several campgrounds offer swimming areas ideal for children. "Nice beach and trail along the water but a lot of it was flooded when we were here," notes a visitor at Gladstone Bay Campground, suggesting checking conditions before planning water activities.

Playground availability: Limited play facilities exist at some campgrounds. A camper at Picture Rocks RV Park and Campground observed, "there were no playgrounds, trails, etc, but the kids stumbled upon a sand dune just off the main stretch of campsites."

Wildlife encounters: Educational opportunities abound with local wildlife. "Lots of people out walking all times of day, otherwise really quiet and don't feel like you are intruded on by neighbors," reports a Pictured Rocks visitor, noting the peaceful setting for nature observation.

Tips from RVers

Full hookup sites: Multiple RV parks offer complete services. "This is a cool little retro campground with full hookup sites and lake access. It's close to a bunch of the UP attractions and the rates are very reasonable," mentions a camper about Indian Lake RV Resort and Campground.

Satellite reception: TV signal access varies by location. "Our satellite was able to locate channels and we had ATT connectivity," reports a visitor at Island Resort and Casino RV Park, noting the casino offers both camping and entertainment options.

Dump station availability: RVers should plan waste disposal carefully. "They do not provide garbage service at your site so you must walk to garbage dumpster," notes a visitor to Island Resort and Casino RV Park, highlighting the need to consider service limitations when selecting rv campgrounds near Nahma, Michigan.
