    Muskegon KOA

    Love this KOA!

Sadly, we just left the KOA Muskegon campground this morning after a relaxing and peaceful three-day stay. While travelling home, plans are already being made for another camping vacay at this KOA. The staff were all friendly and helpful, creating a family-like atmosphere. The cabins were clean, updated, and the beds were quite comfortable. Our deluxe cabin bathroom and kitchenette were also stocked with amenities, making the stay comfortable and effortless. Outside our temporary home was our own gas grill, patio table with seating, fire ring, and Adirondack chairs. How nice it was for meals on the deck and campfires in the evenings! Every morning we looked forward to the 3/4 mile hiking trail around the lake... which was gorgeous. Although, we personally don't fish, we enjoyed watching other guests fishing from the shore and various docks regularly. There is also a fun area of the campground that includes playground equipment, basketball, volleyball, a jumping pad that looks like a blast, and they were setting up some interesting looking mining activity. We did spend time on their community patio overlooking a fabulous greenspace, fire pit, swim beach, and the lake. I could've spent all day on the patio with the relaxing patio lights, flowering planters, and comfortable Adirondack chairs. The camp store is again clean, updated, and well-stocked, but I was also impressed that the prices were reasonable, which is not always the case in these type of"convenience" situations. Overall, cherished camping memories were made this past weekend, and we are anxious to return in the near future for more! Thank you KOA Muskegon staff!

    Cartier Park Campground

Good alternative to Ludington State Park

Park had vacancy when I called late Friday afternoon for Saturday.  So if you want to stay in the Ludington area but can't get into the State Park, this is good.  Just about 2 miles from the State Park beaches and less than 2 miles into downtown.  There is a designated paved trail that runs right through the campground.  You can easily ride bikes downtown where there is a large variety of restaurants and/or brewery.  The whole downtown area is very cool with city parks/beaches/marina/shops.  Office staff was very friendly and professional.  We camped in the "rustic" section, meaning no electric or running water on site.  Bathroom was relatively clean and near our site.  Crowd was not too rowdy and pretty chill.  Lots of kids ;-)  and dogs ;-(.  Best features are location (at nothing, but near everything).  Worst features mentioned by others - there is no fence between the campground and the busy road, road noise, the cemetery does not bother us.  Ludington State Park has MANY excellent opportunities hiking, biking, watercraft, beach bumming.  Highly recommend the State Park....but it is very hard to get into in the summer.  Stay here instead and you'll be half way between the State Park and Downtown.

    Newaygo State Park Campground

    Good summer weekend destination

If you have any watercraft, this is a good weekender spot. The hike trails are easily traversed and if you ask the camp ranger at reception, you can also rent single or tandem kayaks for *quite a reasonable price in varying time blocks if you don't have any watercraft of your own - you just tell them what time that you want to start and they will bring the kayak to the boat launch for you, which is great. Trash dumpsters and firewood are available at the campground entrance (if wood for some reason is unavailable, there's a BP gas station nearby that also sells it for $1 cheaper a bundle). The designated swimming area for the site is not the best unless you have small children, but if you like towed tubing, there's plenty of that happening mid-lake, outside of the other pontoons and boats. Also, despite the features listed here, there are no shower facilities available at this site, so bring bath wipes if you want to stay fresh! The water pump was also inoperable during my stay, but came prepared with plenty of bottled water anyway. The campfire pits also do not have grates for grilling/cooking any hot food, but if you have any cast iron cookware, you can get around this by placing your fire pit logs as evenly as possible so you can set your cookware direct on the flame (or just bring a mini grill if you prefer). Also close enough to Grand Haven so you can spend a few hours there as part of a mini get-away and still get to your site within about an hour or so.

Hill & Hollow Campground & RV Park

    Location is perfect!

Campsite is located 2 miles from downtown Pentwater, adorable small town on the water. Mears state park is 2 miles from the campground as well, Lake Michigan beaches. The playground on the beach is perfect for younger kids. There is a pavilion that serves hot food and ice cream ( hot food ends at 5pm/ ice cream till sunset.) Our kids loved walking in town and heading to the beach.

With that said, there is plenty to do at the campground . Outdoor pool, AJs (putt- putt golf, arcade, playground, go-karts) extra fee for AJs but reasonable priced, basketball court, volleyball court, small baseball diamond, tennis table, general store, shower house by pool ( very clean), private bonfire pits ( most campsites).

Seasonal’s were very friendly and helpful with local things to do. RV camp, Tent camp, or tent cabin.

Dump station available, firewood for sale, ice for sale, general store has several camping items, 15 minutes away is meijer in ludington. 2 minutes away gas station 2 minutes to Lake Michigan beaches 2 minutes to Pentwater downtown shopping

    Stony Haven Campground & Cabins

Great fun was had by all

We had a large family camp weekend at Stony Haven. We had 5 sites (21-25) pack to capacity with 32 people.  They owners allowed use to squeeze in a few extra bodies more than their policies specify.

They offer so much at the campground!! We rented bikes and tubes, but they also rent canoes & kayaks (including launch & pickup), pedal cars, yard games and wifi hotspots.  They have a nice playground with swings, a sandbox, slide and climbers.  Adjacent to the playground is a large pavilion with charcoal grills and a volleyball quart.

The tent sites were very nice. Well maintained, each with their own fire ring, a picnic table,  water spickets and electric.  They also have full hookup sites for RVs, rustic sites and mini cabins.

There is a walking path around the back of the campground. It cuts through the woods and past a pond.  My kids (ages 1.5, 3, 5,& 6) spent hours at the pond catching frogs.

The bathrooms were clean and checked several times a day. There were public bathrooms with a few stalls and a shower, but there were also 2 private bathrooms with showers, one of which was handicap/family.  There were 2 additional private shower rooms.  They also have a laundry facility ON SITE!!!!  This came in very handy when I opened up my canvas hammock and found mold.

There is access to Stony Lake across the street and that connects to Lake Michigan.  There was an awesome county beach 5 min down the road on Lake Michigan.  It was right where the big lake meets the outlet for Stony Lake, Benona County Park. When they weren't at the pond my kids were playing in the sand and swimming at the beach.  I love little outlets like this because they are usually shallower and warmer than the big lake and are great for my littles.

They offer a short worship service on Sunday mornings for all that wish to participate.

They owners were so sweet and easy going. We called several times to adjust our reservation right up to the day before and they gracefully tolerated our shuffling and were able to accommodate us. They even allowed us to leave our packed trailer at the site while we spent the afternoon at the beach after checkout.  We came back to the site ate, used the bathroom, hooked up the trailer and took off for home.

    Muskegon County Pioneer County Park

    Beautiful and relaxing

This campground is our home away from home in the summer! It is beautiful & very relaxing especially during the weekdays when it's not as full. The bathrooms are clean & the rangers keep up with mowing & other chores to keep the grounds clean. When it gets crowded the wifi doesn't work great & some of the campers are not very respectful; they cut through lots & don't abide by the rules (no pets on beach & no bikes or skateboards on boardwalk). The rangers get after them when they see it. Gets frustrating because it ruins it for others who care about the park. The only other downfall is there isn't much beach because of the high water table. I wish they could dredge & bring in more sand. Otherwise it's our favorite place to be!

    South Channel Campground

    Love it!

Stayed here with our camper over the weekend, we loved it! We stayed on the channel side, and was right next to the pathway to walk to the channel. It’s very well maintained, fire pit rings, bath house, electric hookups, dump station, paved spots. It was close to The beach to Lake Michigan and the beautiful sand dunes right on the beach. We brought our dogs and stayed for two nights, it was a great place to start our camping season.

    Hideaway Campground

    A favorite

Hideaway is one of my favorite campgrounds. We were on a tent site, which was kind of small, but the campground was great.

They offer both tent and RV sites ranging in from rustic to full hookup and cabins. The bathrooms and showers are very nice and cleaned daily. There is laundry on site. They have a full store on the grounds for all your camping needs. With a restuarant counter inside the store that serves breakfast-dinner and hand scooped ice cream you don't even need to bring a cooler.

Minutes from Silver Lake Sand Dunes and Little Saubel State Park this is a perfect location. If the sandy beach isn't your ideal vacation the park also features a full size inground pool and lounge deck.

Campers returning after dusk use a key code to open the front gate of this secure campground. Unlike camping at Silver Lake State Park, this location is quietly tucked off the main, very busy stretch of town.

Guide to Montague

Cabin accommodations near Montague, Michigan span from rustic mini cabins to deluxe units with private amenities. Montague's location along Michigan's western shore provides access to Lake Michigan beaches and inland lakes within a 20-mile radius. The region features sandy shorelines, forested campgrounds, and water recreation opportunities throughout the May to October camping season.

What to do

Explore winter activities: Muskegon State Park offers year-round cabin camping with unique winter recreation options. "Across the road is the Winter complex, sledding, skating, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and luge course. Our kids had a blast here, they have tons of bonfire pits as well," notes Melissa M. about Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park.

Fish at multiple locations: The region offers diverse fishing opportunities at inland lakes and rivers. Blue Lake County Park provides "quiet, very small campground on Big Blue Lake. Gorgeous water views and very clean showers and rest rooms," according to Doreen B. about Blue Lake County Park.

Kayak the White River: Launch from nearby locations for an easy paddle to campground landings. "We loved this campground! We brought our kayaks and just brought one vehicle up the river to the start point to put in and got out right at the campground," shares Cassondra P. from her experience at White River RV Park & Campground.

Hike wooded trails: Several campgrounds feature walking paths through forested areas. "Every year we go here with our whole family! We love the group camping area. Multiple bathrooms. Right on Lake Michigan. Great place to spend time with the family," notes Jamie M. about Muskegon County Pioneer County Park.

What campers like

Mini cabins with amenities: Some state parks offer compact cabin options with basic conveniences. "Stayed in Mini Cabin #16 over New Years. Hoped to try Luge at the adventure park but no snow and temps too warm prior to our trip. Cabin sleeps 4 in 2 bunk beds. Mini frig, microwave and table with chairs. Electricity and heat. Great choice for winter camping," shares Kathie M. about Lake Michigan Campground.

Clean bathroom facilities: Campgrounds in the area typically maintain high standards of cleanliness. "This is a super clean family friendly campground! It is one of our favorite places to camp and go back every year. The pool is not a large swimming pool but an activity pool with a kids area that is walk in shallow, a whirlpool circle, basketball area and a water slide," says Cassondra P. about Dunes Harbor Family Camp.

Lake access for swimming: Many campgrounds provide direct access to water for recreation. "The beach is a beautiful place to watch sunsets or see the moon over the lake. The spots are pretty close together but the ground is soft and flat. Choose a spot around the edge for some privacy," advises Jake N. about Pioneer County Park.

On-site rental equipment: Several campgrounds offer canoes, kayaks, tubes and bicycles for rent. "They offer so much at the campground! We rented bikes and tubes, but they also rent canoes & kayaks (including launch & pickup), pedal cars, yard games and wifi hotspots," notes Sarah S. who stayed at Stony Haven Campground & Cabins.

What you should know

Seasonal limitations: Most campgrounds operate from May through mid-October. "White River RV Park operates seasonally from May through mid-October," with variations between facilities. At the Channel Campground, one camper notes it's open "April 12 to October 25," providing more specific dates for planning purposes.

Cabin availability varies: Reserve cabins well in advance, especially for holiday weekends. "We called in March for the 3rd weekend in July and were able to get all the sites we needed together along with cabins for those without access to campers," mentions Ricky M. from his stay at White River RV Park & Campground.

Alcohol policies differ: Some campgrounds prohibit alcohol consumption. At Dunes Harbor Family Camp, one reviewer notes, "This is a dry campground," while other campgrounds permit alcohol. Check specific policies before arrival.

Cabin amenities vary by location: Cabin facilities range from rustic to full-service. "Have stayed in these cabins several times over the years. #16 in need of deep cleaning and minor maintenance," reports Kathie M. about cabins at Muskegon State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Look for campgrounds with activities: Select locations with kid-focused amenities. "This campground is FUN!!! The waterpark, playground, hammock area, swings, biggest sand box ever, all the activities, and can't forget the ice cream shop!!!" enthuses Melissa B. about Dunes Harbor Family Camp.

Consider tent platforms: Some campgrounds provide elevated surfaces for tents. "Tent camping has platforms, so your tent is off the ground," notes Marla S. from her stay at Stony Haven Campground & Cabins.

Check for playground access: Many campgrounds feature play equipment for children. "They have a nice playground with swings, a sandbox, slide and climbers. Adjacent to the playground is a large pavilion with charcoal grills and a volleyball quart," reports Sarah S. about Stony Haven Campground.

Look for privacy options: Some family-friendly sites offer more separation. "This camp ground is very crowed, during the summer. The sites are close together, dirt, grass and semi-level. They have water, electric, dump station, firepit & picnic table. There is a path to Lake Michigan," explains Lora H. about Pioneer County Park.

Tips from RVers

Electric capacity varies: Check amperage availability when booking. "15amp outlet was tricky and popped everytime we plugged anything into it. 30amp plug worked fine," warns Dakota R. about their experience at Blue Lake County Park.

Site layout considerations: RV sites have varying orientations and privacy. "We had one of the sites closest to the beach access which was very nice for us, but since we were there Labor Day weekend(my mistake lol) we had a lot of traffic come through our campsite," shares Julia A. about Pioneer County Park.

Delivery services available: Some campgrounds offer convenience services. "If you purchase ice, firewood, or propane from the store they will deliver it to your site for free! Very nice touch," notes Brad S. about Dunes Harbor Family Camp.

Site selection impacts experience: Choose sites based on sun exposure and proximity to amenities. "The east side of the campground has the river and lots of mature trees for shade. The west side is nearly wide open to the sun. Only saplings trees that where planted when the campground was build in 2015," advises Brad S. about Dunes Harbor Family Camp.
