Ionia, Michigan features a range of mixed-use campgrounds scattered around the scenic Sessions Lake and Flat River areas. Bertha Brock County Park provides rustic tent camping, RV sites, and cabins just outside the city, while Ionia State Recreation Area offers both developed and walk-in camping opportunities along Sessions Lake. Campgrounds like Alice Springs RV Park & Resort and Wabasis Lake County Park complement the area with more amenity-rich options. Sites throughout the region accommodate various camping styles from tent-only primitive sites to full-hookup RV locations and rental cabins.

Camping seasons generally run from April through October across most developed campgrounds, with few options available year-round. Summer months draw the highest visitation, particularly at waterfront locations. The region experiences typical Midwest seasonal patterns with hot summers and cold winters that limit camping outside peak months. Many campgrounds require advance reservations, particularly for weekend stays during summer, while some sites operate on a first-come basis. Bertha Brock Park features walk-in access across a historic bridge, with primitive facilities in a natural setting. A visitor noted, "Bertha Brock is a great place for families. It is generally quiet, especially on non-holiday weekends. Near Ionia State Park with a nice beach for swimming or boating."

Campers frequently mention Sessions Lake at Ionia State Recreation Area as a standout feature, offering swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating opportunities. The recreation area contains multiple trail systems, including hiking paths around the lake, mountain biking routes, and equestrian trails. Several reviewers highlight the peacefulness and natural setting of area campgrounds, though facilities receive mixed reviews. Bertha Brock County Park earns praise for its secluded sites and disc golf course, while some visitors note the prevalence of insects near wooded sites. According to one camper at Ionia Recreation Area: "There is a disc golf course, mountain bike trail, equestrian trails, hiking trails, a beautiful no-wake lake perfect for swimming, kayaking, or fishing. The beach is fantastic especially for little kids who might not be the best swimmers."

      Double RR Ranch RV Resort

      Plenty to do here

Kayak/canoe, tubing, horseback riding, golf. They have plenty do do here but they just seem to float along. This is not a camp ground that uplifts there game to make it better and be a rising star. No full hook up site other than seasonal. Campstore is very limited, but good for the kids. Alway enjoy staying here but just think they could be more. They do put on a good fireworks on July 4th

      Fort Custer Recreation Area

      MTB camp and bike (again)

We camped and rode (again) at Fort Custer.  We've been here 2x before (once in a cabin and once in tents) and this has now officially become a favorite.

We loved our site (so don't book this one) as it's close to the trails for riding.  The campground was almost to capacity, but still some open sites.

All in all this was a great trip, and we even visited Belle's brewery on our way home.

      Crockery Creek RV Park

      Rude and unprofessional

The little owners wife racially profiled my kids friends mom,  in front of the kids!!!!!!  Ha!  She tried accusing us of sneaking in their pool.  That's hilarious,  because we paid $3700.00 for a seasonal.  The pool is actually small and it was oily and full of hair.  Being off Apple Ave,  it's  loud and hard to relax.  My husband had a tragic workplace accident,  so we weren't able to get to the camper in a few weeks.  The owner called him multiple times at once,  being aggressive with his tone,  trying to get us to pull our camper so they can rent that spot out.  They must be desperate for money.  They should try reading up on the law.  Their website lies about their amenities,  they had no fish all season and their pond was disgusting.

      Steamboat Park Campground

      Wonderful, well thought through campground.

I have had a very enjoyable stay. The river location is quite nice and the grounds are very well cared for. The site(and all sites, as far as I can see) are quite level. The bathrooms are not just clean and well maintained, but the shower rooms also have a dedicated sink and toilet, which I much appreciate. The washer and dryers in the bathhouse are brand new and take credit cards. While it is near a regional airport, there is close to no air traffic and no commercial traffic I noticed. Overall, probably one of the top 5 campgrounds I have encountered, if the list was for being up to date, well thought out and well provisioned. Everything was top notch.

    What to do

Disc golf courses: Ionia State Recreation Area offers an 18-hole disc golf course among several recreational activities. A short walk or bike ride to the beach of Sessions Lake or even to the peninsula to fish from dock," notes Nick B.

Kayaking on calm waters: Sessions Lake at Ionia State Recreation Area provides excellent paddling opportunities. "Nice camping. Great lake for fishing, swimming, kyaking or small boating. Scenic views on trails around the lake. Not too far so the kids can fallow along," according to Jo H.

Hiking trails: Bertha Brock County Park offers several marked hiking paths with historic features. "It was only $2 to enter the park. There was three hiking trails to choose from, we choose the 'turkey trail'. The trail was well marked but got quite confusing about 3/4 in. Tons of fun things to see here, beautiful stone bridges," reports Justyna E.

    What campers like

Secluded camping spots: Many campgrounds near Ionia feature private sites away from crowds. "We just got back from Ionia State Campground, and we had the most lovely time! First of all, I did some research ahead of time to find a more private camping spot, and ours did not disappoint. After looking around the campground, there were numerous spots that were very secluded and private," shares Rachel P.

Fishing opportunities: Maple River Campground offers riverfront sites ideal for anglers. "We were on site 6, and there was plenty of space! We were able to park the camper with the door facing the river. It was great for fishing, and our dogs had a great time too," according to Alexandra M.

Clean facilities: Some campgrounds maintain well-kept amenities. "We stayed in the camper cabins. Each cabin had a living room, two bedrooms, kitchen work counter, dining table, microwave, and a small fridge. One of the rooms contains a queen size bed, and the other bedroom contains two sets of bunk beds," reports ERolf P. about Wabasis Lake County Park.

    What you should know

Walk-in sites requirement: Some camping areas require hiking to reach sites. Michael S. warns about Ionia State Recreation Area's Beechwood Campground: "Once you do figure out that you have to drive to acolyte back end of park to register then turn all the way around and find hidden non marked campground, you'll soon realize they are walk/hike in sites. NO WHERE on DNR website for reservations does it say this."

Limited amenities at some parks: Many camping areas have basic facilities only. "There is dispersed camping. Out house bathrooms," notes Lydia T. about Bertha Brock Park.

Additional fees may apply: Snow Lake Kampground and other private campgrounds charge for extras. "You do have to pay $5 for shower use and $5 to use the dump station. They do have ice and firewood for sale there, but there isn't a little store so you have to leave the campground and drive a few miles for that," advises Alexandra M. about Maple River Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly swimming areas: Sessions Lake provides safe swimming for children. "The beach is fantastic especially for little kids who might not be the best swimmers ready for Lake Michigan or lakes with lots of boats and waves to deal with. Nice and sandy and a nice store and ice cream shop at the beach," mentions Joshua E.

Playground access: Some campgrounds offer play equipment for children. "This is a small campground with fairly good size sites. There is a playground in the center which was very handy for our little ones. They could play and we could watch from our site," shares Megan T. about Wabasis Lake County Park.

Budget-friendly activities: Scalley Lake Park Campground provides affordable options for families. "Amazing spot away from the city! The owner of the place is very accommodating and pleasant to be around. Private lake with no motors so it is very quiet and peaceful!!!" says Nolyn S.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at many area campgrounds. "To say the sites are uneven is putting it mildly. For 15 sites, you seriously can't level them??" warns Michael S. about Ionia State Recreation Area.

Limited large RV sites: Tyler Creek has improved site conditions. "Lots of lot improvement so it's not so bumpy and off level. Neighbors had a problem with there electric box the owner was there in 5 minutes to fix it," notes Gina K.

Seasonal campground differences: Most campgrounds operate April through October. "Overall this campground was fun. It's on a golf course which is something new and exciting! There was a live band there on the Saturday night we were there, they were AMAZING!" shares Angela J. about Tyler Creek.
