School Section Lake Veteran's Park Campground

    Nice campground

Was a decent place to camp- lots are very close though! Luckily in the fall it wasn’t very busy. Nice little lake on property. Fire pits in odd spot near the road. No pets allowed-not even a cat that stays inside in your camper! Also- there is a $7 a day fee for out of the county. Even when you arrive late at night.

    Muskegon KOA

    Love this KOA!

Sadly, we just left the KOA Muskegon campground this morning after a relaxing and peaceful three-day stay. While travelling home, plans are already being made for another camping vacay at this KOA. The staff were all friendly and helpful, creating a family-like atmosphere. The cabins were clean, updated, and the beds were quite comfortable. Our deluxe cabin bathroom and kitchenette were also stocked with amenities, making the stay comfortable and effortless. Outside our temporary home was our own gas grill, patio table with seating, fire ring, and Adirondack chairs. How nice it was for meals on the deck and campfires in the evenings! Every morning we looked forward to the 3/4 mile hiking trail around the lake... which was gorgeous. Although, we personally don't fish, we enjoyed watching other guests fishing from the shore and various docks regularly. There is also a fun area of the campground that includes playground equipment, basketball, volleyball, a jumping pad that looks like a blast, and they were setting up some interesting looking mining activity. We did spend time on their community patio overlooking a fabulous greenspace, fire pit, swim beach, and the lake. I could've spent all day on the patio with the relaxing patio lights, flowering planters, and comfortable Adirondack chairs. The camp store is again clean, updated, and well-stocked, but I was also impressed that the prices were reasonable, which is not always the case in these type of"convenience" situations. Overall, cherished camping memories were made this past weekend, and we are anxious to return in the near future for more! Thank you KOA Muskegon staff!

    Cartier Park Campground

Good alternative to Ludington State Park

Park had vacancy when I called late Friday afternoon for Saturday.  So if you want to stay in the Ludington area but can't get into the State Park, this is good.  Just about 2 miles from the State Park beaches and less than 2 miles into downtown.  There is a designated paved trail that runs right through the campground.  You can easily ride bikes downtown where there is a large variety of restaurants and/or brewery.  The whole downtown area is very cool with city parks/beaches/marina/shops.  Office staff was very friendly and professional.  We camped in the "rustic" section, meaning no electric or running water on site.  Bathroom was relatively clean and near our site.  Crowd was not too rowdy and pretty chill.  Lots of kids ;-)  and dogs ;-(.  Best features are location (at nothing, but near everything).  Worst features mentioned by others - there is no fence between the campground and the busy road, road noise, the cemetery does not bother us.  Ludington State Park has MANY excellent opportunities hiking, biking, watercraft, beach bumming.  Highly recommend the State Park....but it is very hard to get into in the summer.  Stay here instead and you'll be half way between the State Park and Downtown.

    Newaygo State Park Campground

    Good summer weekend destination

If you have any watercraft, this is a good weekender spot. The hike trails are easily traversed and if you ask the camp ranger at reception, you can also rent single or tandem kayaks for *quite a reasonable price in varying time blocks if you don't have any watercraft of your own - you just tell them what time that you want to start and they will bring the kayak to the boat launch for you, which is great. Trash dumpsters and firewood are available at the campground entrance (if wood for some reason is unavailable, there's a BP gas station nearby that also sells it for $1 cheaper a bundle). The designated swimming area for the site is not the best unless you have small children, but if you like towed tubing, there's plenty of that happening mid-lake, outside of the other pontoons and boats. Also, despite the features listed here, there are no shower facilities available at this site, so bring bath wipes if you want to stay fresh! The water pump was also inoperable during my stay, but came prepared with plenty of bottled water anyway. The campfire pits also do not have grates for grilling/cooking any hot food, but if you have any cast iron cookware, you can get around this by placing your fire pit logs as evenly as possible so you can set your cookware direct on the flame (or just bring a mini grill if you prefer). Also close enough to Grand Haven so you can spend a few hours there as part of a mini get-away and still get to your site within about an hour or so.

Hill & Hollow Campground & RV Park

    Location is perfect!

Campsite is located 2 miles from downtown Pentwater, adorable small town on the water. Mears state park is 2 miles from the campground as well, Lake Michigan beaches. The playground on the beach is perfect for younger kids. There is a pavilion that serves hot food and ice cream ( hot food ends at 5pm/ ice cream till sunset.) Our kids loved walking in town and heading to the beach.

With that said, there is plenty to do at the campground . Outdoor pool, AJs (putt- putt golf, arcade, playground, go-karts) extra fee for AJs but reasonable priced, basketball court, volleyball court, small baseball diamond, tennis table, general store, shower house by pool ( very clean), private bonfire pits ( most campsites).

Seasonal’s were very friendly and helpful with local things to do. RV camp, Tent camp, or tent cabin.

Dump station available, firewood for sale, ice for sale, general store has several camping items, 15 minutes away is meijer in ludington. 2 minutes away gas station 2 minutes to Lake Michigan beaches 2 minutes to Pentwater downtown shopping

    Stony Haven Campground & Cabins

Great fun was had by all

We had a large family camp weekend at Stony Haven. We had 5 sites (21-25) pack to capacity with 32 people.  They owners allowed use to squeeze in a few extra bodies more than their policies specify.

They offer so much at the campground!! We rented bikes and tubes, but they also rent canoes & kayaks (including launch & pickup), pedal cars, yard games and wifi hotspots.  They have a nice playground with swings, a sandbox, slide and climbers.  Adjacent to the playground is a large pavilion with charcoal grills and a volleyball quart.

The tent sites were very nice. Well maintained, each with their own fire ring, a picnic table,  water spickets and electric.  They also have full hookup sites for RVs, rustic sites and mini cabins.

There is a walking path around the back of the campground. It cuts through the woods and past a pond.  My kids (ages 1.5, 3, 5,& 6) spent hours at the pond catching frogs.

The bathrooms were clean and checked several times a day. There were public bathrooms with a few stalls and a shower, but there were also 2 private bathrooms with showers, one of which was handicap/family.  There were 2 additional private shower rooms.  They also have a laundry facility ON SITE!!!!  This came in very handy when I opened up my canvas hammock and found mold.

There is access to Stony Lake across the street and that connects to Lake Michigan.  There was an awesome county beach 5 min down the road on Lake Michigan.  It was right where the big lake meets the outlet for Stony Lake, Benona County Park. When they weren't at the pond my kids were playing in the sand and swimming at the beach.  I love little outlets like this because they are usually shallower and warmer than the big lake and are great for my littles.

They offer a short worship service on Sunday mornings for all that wish to participate.

They owners were so sweet and easy going. We called several times to adjust our reservation right up to the day before and they gracefully tolerated our shuffling and were able to accommodate us. They even allowed us to leave our packed trailer at the site while we spent the afternoon at the beach after checkout.  We came back to the site ate, used the bathroom, hooked up the trailer and took off for home.

    Muskegon County Pioneer County Park

    Beautiful and relaxing

This campground is our home away from home in the summer! It is beautiful & very relaxing especially during the weekdays when it's not as full. The bathrooms are clean & the rangers keep up with mowing & other chores to keep the grounds clean. When it gets crowded the wifi doesn't work great & some of the campers are not very respectful; they cut through lots & don't abide by the rules (no pets on beach & no bikes or skateboards on boardwalk). The rangers get after them when they see it. Gets frustrating because it ruins it for others who care about the park. The only other downfall is there isn't much beach because of the high water table. I wish they could dredge & bring in more sand. Otherwise it's our favorite place to be!

    South Channel Campground

    Love it!

Stayed here with our camper over the weekend, we loved it! We stayed on the channel side, and was right next to the pathway to walk to the channel. It’s very well maintained, fire pit rings, bath house, electric hookups, dump station, paved spots. It was close to The beach to Lake Michigan and the beautiful sand dunes right on the beach. We brought our dogs and stayed for two nights, it was a great place to start our camping season.

Guide to Holton

The Holton area sits at an elevation of approximately 750 feet in western Michigan's forested region. Located about 15 miles east of Lake Michigan, the area experiences warm summers with temperatures averaging in the mid-80s and cold winters with significant snowfall. Camping sites near Holton range from rustic tent-only locations to full-hookup RV sites with most campgrounds operating from May through mid-October.

What to do

**Tubing adventures: Chinook Camping offers river trips where tubers end directly at the campground. "We've camped and tubed here for years. Love the area. Basically everything you could need is in the campground or across the street at the store. Campground offers river trips by tube or kayak," notes Billy R.

Winter outdoor activities: Muskegon State Park remains open year-round with winter-specific recreation options. "Campground was nice in the winter our spot was plowed out and had a reserved cone at it, the bathrooms are closed and water is off but the outhouse is open... Across the road is the Winter complex, sledding, skating, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and luge course," reports Melissa M.

Fishing opportunities: Several lakes in the region provide fishing access with fewer crowds than coastal spots. Blue Lake County Park offers lakeside fishing on Big Blue Lake where campers can fish directly from shore. A reviewer named Dakota R. notes, "We stayed at site 1 best views of the whole site. A little tricky to make work but definitely best site. Beautiful sunset."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Pioneer County Park maintains well-kept bathhouses and shower facilities. "Clean bathrooms and showers. Warm water for the showers unlike some I have been to," shares Zach M., highlighting a practical comfort often overlooked when planning a camping trip.

Beach access: Many campers appreciate the proximity to Lake Michigan beaches. "The campground was full on my visit, but that did not affect the atmosphere. It was quiet and sites are large and well spaced out. The staff did a great job keeping things clean and well stocked. My site was right next to the beach access, and it was fantastic!" writes Holly S. about Lake Michigan Campground.

Family-friendly atmosphere: Muskegon KOA provides numerous activities for families. "Employees were all so nice. They have lots of activities, a lake, trails, everything. Definitely coming back," says Saige, indicating the campground's appeal for families seeking structured recreation.

What you should know

Site positioning considerations: Some campgrounds feature sites with dramatically different views and privacy levels. At Blue Lake County Park, campers note significant differences between sites: "Very pretty small campground right on blue lake. Lots of wildlife. We stayed at site 1 best views of the whole site."

Seasonal facility limitations: Winter camping requires additional planning. A camper at Lake Michigan Campground at Muskegon State Park shares, "We went in March so the weather was cold but doable. 20 degrees at night but with electricity hookups we put a space heater in our tent. Campsites are nice no running water at that time of year & only primitive outhouses."

Crowds at peak times: Most campgrounds near Holton fill completely during summer weekends and holidays. At White River RV Park & Campground, a reviewer notes, "We found this campground online looking for a place to hold our annual family camp out. Staff was very helpful in making reservations and holding sites for our group. We called in March for the 3rd weekend in July."

Tips for camping with families

Look for recreation amenities: Multiple campgrounds feature family-specific facilities. "This place has it all. Camping, river trips, pool, disc golf course, arcade and so much more. The playground area is so nice & everything is very well kept," states Melissa F. about Chinook Camping.

Consider cabin options: For glamping close to Holton, Michigan, several parks offer cabin accommodations. Oak Knoll Family Campground provides family-friendly cabin options as one camper notes: "Small, fully stocked store with all the necessities. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. The campground is clean, but very small spaces for each site."

Seek out swimming areas: Ed H. Henning Park provides river access for swimming. "This is a great place to camp. Clean bathrooms, camp sites, and friendly staff. Easy access to the Muskegon River and close to downtown Newago," shares Mark K.

Tips from RVers

Reserve early for premium sites: The most desirable RV sites book months in advance. White River RV Park campers recommend: "Late summer visit. The campground is very clean and quiet. Also very large, so lots of room to walk or ride bikes. Located next to the White River for canoeing fun too."

Check hookup capacities: Different campgrounds offer varying electrical service. One camper at Blue Lake County Park reports, "15amp outlet was tricky and popped everytime we plugged anything into it. 30amp plug worked fine."

Consider spacing between sites: For luxury camping and glamping near Holton, Michigan, site privacy varies significantly between parks. "Campsites are right on top of each other, so very little privacy," warns Nicole B. about one location, while another reviewer at Pioneer County Park notes, "The sites are close together but the ground is soft and flat. Choose a spot around the edge for some privacy."
