    Countryside Campground & Cabins

Kid and Pet Friendly with technology hip owners.

W.O.W. This is the CLEANEST campground I have ever been to. Seriously not 1 cigarette but or candy wrapper on my site when I arrived. Picnic tables are freshly washed. Sites around#40 are spacious and shaded all day which was awesome. No mats allowed but it was great as the grass is green and lush. Store has apparel, camping tools, and ice cream. Kids ran there every day and it is affordable and friendly. Pool is super clean as well as the bathrooms. Loved the online check in process so there was no delays and we just pulled right into our site. If you have pets there is a fenced in dog park with pick up bags and mowed trails for daily walking or biking. We will be back!!!  WIFI too!

    Jewell Lake NF Campground

    Jewell Lake

I think jewel lake is pretty good because they have good campsites. I like the dog, they have an island, you can go on can't sleep on there, but you can go on it. They have a beach, they have a bridge, so you can fish on good water to go swimming, you can drive a boat, you can go on a kayaking on a jet ski, any type of water boats the camp site it's pet friendly perfect for campers or pull behinds tense, they're ok, for motorhome\ RV's but it's pretty good.

    Tawas Point State Park Campground

    Nice but busy

It is very nice and extremely clean. However it is kind of cramped. Sites feel close and everyone was very nosey. Pet beach is nice. Water is beautiful. Convenient location. People didn't listen to rules such as quiet hour and let their badly behaved dogs run loose. Bath house is extremely nice! All in all, I would camp here on an off day/season.

    Huron-Manistee National Forest

We weren’t planning to camp but...

but we were blown away! The dunes along the river seem out of place, and wonderfully so. you could spend so much tIme here, climbing around, swimming, kayaking, and enjoying the views. We keep our Jeep ready for camping at any moment and places like this are why we do it. We just had to stay, and I am so excited to go back in the fall. I know this says no pets but we were able to bring our dog and saw many other dogs enjoying the park as well!

    Tawas Point State Park Campground

    Beautiful State Park

The park is very clean. Some sites are small, some are larger. Have visited many times. Fun interpretive programs for adults and kids. Beautiful beach to spend the day on. Located close to town. Lots of areas to walk as well. Not pet friendly though, they are allowed at the sites, but not on the beach.

    Tawas Point State Park Campground

    Terrific location

This is a beautiful and picturesque park. The bathrooms are clean and well maintained.

Sites are large in general with plenty of room for activities.

The pet friendly beach is fantastic for dogs as the water is very shallow and let's them be active.

The access roads on the loop are narrow, so you may need to take some care of if you have a large vehicle.

There's also a kids playground and volleyball court.

    Sleeper State Park Campground

    A nice state park

A nice campground with two loops. Can be tricky getting a large RV in especially during bigger holidays but the sites are large and you can park you camper a few different ways. Decent trails. Beach access across the road. There is a pet friendly section of the beach. Lots of pets here. The bathrooms in the east loop are older and not that great but the other loop has a nice modern bathroom. Sites are mostly flat more so on the eastern loop. We had a nice visit.

What to do

Hiking trail exploration: The Rifle River Recreation Area offers numerous hiking trails suitable for all skill levels. At Devoe Lake Rustic Campground, visitors can access lookout points with panoramic views. "The overlook tower is definitely worth the hike and there's a hidden surprise at the same location for those who know where to look," notes camper Tasha T.

Paddling multiple lakes: The interconnected waterways allow paddlers to experience diverse ecosystems. "One of the greatest beauties and draws of this area is the five lakes within the Recreation Area...Devoe Lake, Grebe Lake, Jewitt Lake, Grousehaven Lake and Lodge Lake. Each is unique, offering different sights and sounds," explains Dave V., who visited the recreation area.

Fishing opportunities: Anglers can catch various fish species throughout the area's lakes. At Secord Lake Campground, "The Lakeview Campground is a great spot for water lovers," according to Jake C., making it "a perfect spot for kayakers" with easy water access for fishing expeditions.

What campers like

Spacious, private sites: Ambrose Lake State Forest Campground provides well-separated camping areas. "All the spots are very large with picnic table and fire pit," mentions camper D.G., while another visitor notes, "Beautiful sites with private, wooded locations or sunset, lake views."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The natural setting attracts diverse wildlife. Dave V. reports seeing "mink, beaver, muskrat, loons, eagle, osprey and three swan" during his stay. Another camper at Ambrose Lake mentions, "I've also woken up to families of deer feeding in the sites next to me more than once."

Clean facilities: Pinconning County Park maintains well-kept amenities. "Flush toilets and shower were well maintained, fire rings provided and nicely kept grounds with observed quiet times made for a fantastic stay!!" says Tony M. Another visitor adds that the "bath house is nice" and they "definitely want to make reservations as it's very busy with fisherman."

What you should know

Site selection matters: Terrain varies significantly between campgrounds and even within the same location. At River View Campground & Canoe Livery, "The rustic sites along the river in section 'N' were very large and spacious spots. Sections L and M seemed to be tightly packed in," explains Phil M.

Seasonal crowds: Summer weekends draw larger crowds. "The Group camping side is considered the 'Adult/Party' area. Nobody was crazy out of hand or anything to that nature, just louder music, drinking, etc.," reports Phil M. about River View Campground.

Water quality varies: Water conditions differ between locations. Secord Lake offers clean water for kayaking, while some areas require caution. At Ambrose Lake, "The lake is small but good for kayak & paddle boarding. Areas of sand but fairly murky. We swam and floated for a few hours in tubes," notes camper D.G.

Reservation requirements: Most popular sites need advance booking. For Devoe Lake, "Sites require a reservation either at the office or Online. Not somewhere you can just pay for on spot because it's in the rifle river recreation area," warns Erin S.

Tips for camping with families

Shallow beach access: Ogemaw County Park and Pinconning County Park offer kid-friendly swimming areas. At Pinconning, "The beach is shallow and great for young kids, we camped over memorial weekend and water was nice even then. They have nice beach chairs to use for free and kayaks you can rent," says Jayne W.

Multiple playground options: Several pet-friendly campgrounds near Alger feature play areas for children. At River View Campground, "There were numerous playground areas, volleyball, horseshoes, and even an arcade area," according to Phil M., providing entertainment beyond nature activities.

Boardwalk exploration: Nature trails with educational features appeal to families. "The coolest thing about this campground was the boardwalk it winds back through the woods and marsh and has a lot of raised Outlook platforms to view the scenery," reports a camper at Pinconning County Park.

Tips from RVers

Paved pad availability: Secure sites with solid foundations when available. At Pinconning County Park, "Our site had a paved pad and patio. You definitely want to try and get one of these sites. The other sites were OK, but dirt pad and many of them had marsh behind or surrounding them," advises a camper named Clint.

Power options: Dog-friendly campgrounds near Alger offer various hookup configurations. Gary D. notes the price difference: "$25 for tent $35 RVs pull threw" at Ogemaw County Park, which provides electric hookups despite being a smaller facility.

Size restrictions: Some campgrounds have limited space for larger rigs. "Fit a 20' camper van well and was an easy overnight stay. Clean, quiet, and comfortable," reports Jeanna A. about Pinconning County Park, indicating the site accommodations for modest-sized vehicles.
