Rutherford Beach Dispersed Camping offers free beachfront sites for pet owners along the Gulf of Mexico with pets allowed throughout the wide, shell-covered shoreline. The hard-packed sand supports RVs and vehicles without getting stuck, making it accessible for campers with dogs of all sizes. Located approximately 45 minutes from the nearest Walmart, this dispersed camping area provides basic amenities including portable toilets near the beach entrance, trash dumpsters, and a water spigot for refilling. Frequent police patrols ensure camper safety while maintaining the relaxed atmosphere. Mosquitoes can become problematic, especially in warmer months when the wind dies down, requiring ample bug spray with DEET for both humans and pets.

Dogs enjoy plenty of room to explore the shoreline at both Rutherford Beach and nearby Holly Beach, though swimming is often discouraged due to water quality concerns. The beaches feature wide stretches of sand allowing significant distance between campsites for privacy. Weather conditions change rapidly along this section of the Louisiana coast, with strong winds sometimes creating blowing sand that can be uncomfortable for pets. Pickled Pelican RV Park provides an alternative with concrete pads and full hookups directly on the beach for $70-75 nightly. Both locations offer excellent shelling opportunities, with new collections of shells appearing daily. Intracoastal Parish Park Campground provides a more developed option with showers, toilets, and pet-friendly cabin accommodations for those seeking additional amenities while traveling with dogs. Pet-friendly campgrounds near Cameron range from free dispersed beach sites to fully hooked-up RV pads, giving dog owners flexible options along the Louisiana Gulf coast.

      Sea Rim State Park Campground

      Vampire mosquitos

Listening to the ocean waves is relaxing enough. I can hang out here for a week. Is green and spacious. The beach is few hundred feet away. There’s power and water. The site is level. Is sooo nice. Once the sun goes down. An army of vampire mosquitos descend on you and your pets. We were enjoying being outside and we had to get into our trailer. Spent a while killing them. Good thing we had walked the dogs. In the trailer the vampire mosquitos would be sucking on you as you killed them. They would be on you all over. Once sunrise came. They were gone. Even with a breeze they came.

      Pickled Pelican RV Park

Great spot on a rare Louisiana Beach

I have camped with friends numerous times at the Pickled Pelican. March 2024 was my first trip with my own camper. The RV spots are all level concrete in excellent condition. There are twelve spots as close to the beach as you can get, with a covered picnic table and grill. There are also 8 spots that do not have the covered picnic tables, across the street from the cabana sites. Four of those are set up to be used as buddy sites where two RVs can park with their camp sides facing each other and have no problems reaching hookups. Water/sewer/electric hookups are all well maintained. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Ice, bait, and some seafood is available in Holly Beach. No convince stores or gas stations thanks to hurricanes. Closest grocery store, gas/diesel, and general merchandise is in Hackberry, 20 minutes north. There is a convenience store a little closer in Johnson Bayou to the West, as well as in Cameron to the East. Going to Cameron requires crossing via a ferry, not always in service.

      Lorrain Parish Park Campground

Hidden Gem by the river -Country charmer

Quiet and relaxing in the river with a beautiful bridge. Only a handful of sites but full hookups. Very clean camp areas, clean bathrooms and a nice pet area. Bring a fishing pole.

      White Oak Parish Park Campground

      This place needs 10 stars!

We couldn’t believe that this place is only $12 after we arrived! It is as nice as any experience campground we’ve stayed at! It has 8 pull through sites. Each site has electricity and water. They each have a fire ring, barbecue, garbage can and picnic table. Each site has a nice lawn and there are trees that provide shade. The tent area is tuck off next to the tree line and they have fire rings and barbecue pits as well. It has clean bathrooms and showers and it has a dump station. They have a huge picnic area along with a great park for kids. They provide a dog station with poop bags and trash. This is situated right on the river and is only a short walk for some amazing views. The campground was quiet and clean I would imagine it would be hard to get a spot here during the busy season! Early morning fisherman do come by the camp on their way to the boat launch but the noise didn’t bother us. This is truly a gem of Louisiana and one you should definitely take the time to discover.

      Soft Sand!

Sketchy access for my rig. I’m a pickup truck camper at 10,000 pounds and was very uncertain about getting very far in. Do I didn’t! No facilities Close to Sabine NWR and Cameron Ferry

      Rutherford Beach Dispersed Camping

Great free camping right on the beach

We were able to camp in our camper van right on the beach, the sand is very hard packed, so we had no trouble even in our two-wheel drive.

Unfortunately the bacteria was so high, so you are not able to swim, but the beach itself was really wide and had a lot of seashells to peruse. It is also very dog friendly, and my dog really enjoyed romping around in the sand as we did our long walks.

There are four porta potty is near the entrance, which is nice that a dispersed place has some facilities. There is also a water spigot with a hose for Philips.

So far there's a couple of other camps at the beach, but it is big enough that there is probably 50 yd between each person, which is really nice. I stayed Sunday to Wednesday, so I don't know if it gets busier during the weekends. But through the week, it seems fairy chill

      Lorrain Parish Park Campground

      Quiet, clean, delightful

We intended to boondock on Rutherford Beach, but we were wholly unimpressed with the area. Spring burning, hurricane devastation, debris - just not a good time for that area. And when the Cameron Ferry turned us down (said the ferry ramp was too steep for our 21 ft Chinook Concourse - we’d rip apart our rear end when loading), we headed to this campground. Oh, what a find! Adorable, quaint and just bayou lovely. Payment online or by calling the parish office. We lucked into the last available site in this 9-site campground. Sat along the bayou on a lovely deck and had a sweet happy hour. Water/electric hookups, dump station and clean showers. For $12! Score!

      Pickled Pelican RV Park

      Awesome views of the Gulf.

Great spot on the Gulf of Mexico. The sites have full hookups and are level, and best of all on the beach. This is not a typical RV park as there are no amenities. As of this date rates are $70 a night. One of the best things is there is a gazebo at the back of the site, with a light. I am from the east side of Louisiana and did not know there was a beach in Louisiana.

    Guide to Cameron

Rutherford Beach Dispersed Camping provides beach access with compact, shell-covered sand supporting vehicles and RVs along Louisiana's Gulf Coast. Located south of Lake Charles, this area experiences high winds, changing weather conditions and significant insect activity during warmer months. The hard-packed beach terrain allows campers to park directly on the shoreline with portable toilets and trash facilities available near the entrance.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities abound: At Sea Rim State Park Campground, visitors can surf cast directly from the beach. "Lots of people catching fish!" notes one camper, while others report good success with shoreline fishing. The Intracoastal Waterway near Cameron also offers productive fishing spots.

Wildlife viewing: The marshlands and coastal areas around Cameron support diverse wildlife. "We loved watching the tugs, barges and fishermen," reports a visitor at Intracoastal Parish Park Campground. Another camper shares: "This campground has water and electric at the site and a dump station for all campers... It was great to watch the tugs push barges all day."

Shell collecting: The Gulf beaches continuously produce new shell specimens after each tide. "Lots and lots of huge shells here," reports one camper at Rutherford Beach, while another mentions "New shells every day" at nearby beaches. Early morning after high tide often yields the best selection.

    What campers like

Direct beach access: Rutherford Beach's firm sand makes it unusually accessible. "The sand here packs well and supports our camper. You will need to be self contained. No hookups here," explains one visitor. The beach stretches for miles with ample space for spreading out.

Privacy between sites: Unlike developed campgrounds, Holly Beach RV Park and the surrounding dispersed camping areas offer space to create separation between campers. "We were the only campers on the beach in December. The weather was in the 60s and sunny," shares one winter visitor.

Affordability: Free and low-cost options make this area budget-friendly. "I don't think I'll ever get over how cool it is to camp directly on the beach, for free," reports a Rutherford Beach camper. For those seeking more amenities, Intracoastal Parish Park offers reasonable rates with water and electric hookups.

    What you should know

Weather changes rapidly: Gulf coast conditions can shift quickly. "The first few days were awesome. There was always a nice breeze that kept the bugs away. Then the wind picked up and didn't stop! We had to leave because it got so bad!" reports a Rutherford Beach visitor.

Mosquito preparation essential: Multiple campgrounds report intense insect activity. At Vinton RV Park, campers find relief with their amenities, but at beach locations, insects can be overwhelming. "The views are alright and it's nice to have free beach access and a few amenities but I have never seen such thick clouds of mosquitos in my life," warns one camper.

Limited services: Most dispersed camping areas have minimal facilities. "I'm a pickup truck camper at 10,000 pounds and was very uncertain about getting very far in," reports a camper at Mae's Beach regarding access concerns. For necessary supplies, plan to stock up before arrival as nearby options are limited.

Water conditions vary: Swimming isn't always recommended due to water clarity issues. "The water looks kind of murky, not dirty, and some locals told us when the wind is just right the water is super muddy," explains a visitor regarding gulf conditions.

    Tips for camping with families

Beach activities planning: Pickled Pelican RV Park provides family-friendly beach access with concrete pads. "Loved our time at the Pickled Pelican. Hosts very communicative & helpful. $75 did seem a bit high since there are no amenities, but the beach is close, clean, & quiet! Very soft sand compared to Galveston."

Vehicle requirements: For pet friendly camping near Cameron, Louisiana, appropriate vehicles matter. "Be careful you don't get stuck in the sand! Check before you pull out on the sand to avoid getting stuck," advises a Holly Beach camper. Four-wheel drive is recommended for softer sand areas.

Resource management: Without hookups at beach sites, plan water usage carefully. "The sand is packed hard enough to pull a trailer right onto the beach. Plenty of room and there are dumpsters, an outside shower and a water spigot. The kids loved fishing right from camp," shares a Rutherford Beach visitor.

Safety considerations: Regular police patrols provide security at most beach camping areas. "Variety of users groups regarding camping style and demographic groups. Plenty of local flavor on the weekends. Overall friendly folks. Frequently patrolled by local deputies," notes a camper.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: For RVers needing full services near Cameron, Beyonder Resort Cajun Moon offers complete facilities. "Very clean and well kept park. Quiet with all concrete pads and grass. Two pools with one being adult only with a hot tub. Nice shower and bathrooms," reports a visitor.

Beach camping considerations: Many RVers successfully camp directly on Cameron's beaches. "Our trailer has narrow tires that are hard to pull on most beaches. The sand here packs well and supports our camper," explains a Rutherford Beach visitor.

Weather protection: Prepare for wind and blowing sand with proper window and door seals. "I have small children, and don't like them getting eaten. We decided to leave a day early because of the mosquitoes. You couldn't even sit outside in the evening and enjoy the ocean breeze," warns a coastal camper about insect challenges.

Site selection: For pet friendly camping near Cameron, choose sites strategically. "We were in spot #53 and I would highly recommend that spot. We only had one neighbor to one side, and it felt a bit more isolated than the others," advises an RVer about site selection at inland campgrounds.
