Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Taylorsville, KY

Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground accommodates pets at all of its sites with spacious, well-maintained camping areas suitable for dogs of various sizes. The campground features 45 RV sites with electric and water hookups, plus primitive tent sites in a separate loop that offers more seclusion for campers with pets. Gravel pads are level and provide ample room for setup alongside grassy areas where leashed dogs can relax. Bathhouses remain exceptionally clean despite high weekend occupancy, with full shower facilities that make extended stays comfortable. Sites have good spacing between neighbors, particularly in the primitive camping section where pets have more room to settle without disturbing nearby campers. The campground has several playgrounds scattered throughout for families, and pets must be leashed at all times while on the property. Campers browse The Dyrt when exploring the best sites near Taylorsville, Kentucky.

Dog-friendly trails connect throughout the 24-mile network at Taylorsville Lake State Park, with both hiking and equestrian paths accessible to leashed pets. The park features multiple trail difficulties, though some sections of the Gazebo Loop and Pioneer Trails become overgrown during peak season and require careful navigation. Water access points for pets exist at the lake, located approximately one mile from the campground area, making it practical for dogs that enjoy swimming. Raccoon activity is common around campsites, so securing pet food is essential to avoid nighttime wildlife encounters. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the region with dogs, positioned within reasonable driving distance to Louisville attractions and bourbon country distilleries. Several sites in the primitive camping area provide more privacy for pets that may be reactive to passing traffic, with P10 offering the most seclusion through natural brush screening.

    Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet, bathrooms lacking.

We had a pretty decent time at Taylorsville Lake. The spots were spacious, and very nice picnic tables. We did a trail which was nice and went down to a boat ramp to see the lake. You can also rent boats there as well. The bathrooms in my opinion needed a major cleaning. They were nice just not very clean. We most likely won’t visit here again but was nice to hit a Kentucky campground. I have found that camping in Kentucky is much cheaper than in Indiana. Definitely worth a checkout.

    Louisville South KOA

    Nice

There was lots to do at this KOA. There was corn hole, ladder ball, pool, walking trails, access to the river, cat fish pond, small dog park, and washers & dryers. You could bring your RV, travel trailer, tent camp, or rent a cabin. I’m sure I’m forgetting something. The spots were close together. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The park was clean and well maintained.

    Elkhorn Creek RV Park

    Nice location, friendly staff

Make sure you take the exit they tell you & do NOT follow gps or you’ll go down a long country road. Nice little family owned campground on Elkhorn Creek. Convenient to Frankfort, Georgetown & Lexington. Waterfront sites available, many concrete sites & some gravel sites. From what I hear, they have made many improvements and continue to do so. I believe most sites are full hookup & they are building cute little pergolas on several sites. I had a long, gravel pull thru site. Barely any room on the camp side but both ends were roomy. Cute little general store & a very clean little laundry building w/a change machine. Fire rings on all sites that I saw. I believe there are 2 play areas for kids & a pool. There is a dog park w/a side for large dogs & small dogs. It was shaded and had seating. Convenient to several distilleries including Buffalo Trace & Woodford Reserve. There’s a place nearby that rents kayaks and canoes. They have entertainment & a food truck on weekends.

    Louisville South KOA

    Great place to stay

The staff are super helpful. The site we had was for a 38’ RV. Full hookups, dog park, lots of places to walk, even trails. We had a great stay here and will most likely come back next time we’re near Louisville.

Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground on the Kentucky River

Waterfall and trails are nice, but the sites aren’t level

The sites here are not level. We used our normal 2x green blocks for the Jack, but needed all 10 of our leveling blocks, plus 8 paving stones to get the appropriate height.

Despite advertising, there is no dog park. There are a ton of dogs, so this would’ve been nice.

The river and waterfall makes it feel like a tranquil place. The walking trail by the river is nice, we walked it almost every day.

Live music and food trucks every Saturday are a nice touch!

    Buffalo Trace Park

    Great lake view

The sites are well-spaced and there’s a beautiful lake where you can kayak, canoe, fish, let your dog swim, etc. Disc golf is the big activity at this park. Awesome walking path and a petting zoo. The park is exceptionally clean. Sites on the lake view side are noisy due to traffic on the highway.

    Bourbon Springs RV Resort

New Campground with a Lot of Promise

We received an information email the day before prior to arrival with general info and wifi password plus how to pre check in. The morning of arrival, we received another email with specific instructions to not trust GPS and follow their instructions. Our Trip Wizard and Waze GPS instructions actually brought us right to the campground  (CG). Since we had pre checked in, we were instructed in the directions email to go directly to deluxe pull-through site 78, where our welcome package would be in the electrical box. The site was plenty long enough for our 40’ toy hauler and F450. Not sure why this is a deluxe site as its gravel with a picnic table and portable fire pit? The utilities were more towards the front of the pad with no issues reaching the connections. It was a nice touch to see a small cement circle pad on the sewer connection. This is a new CG, so amenities like the laundry and gift shop were not opened yet. Water pressure was good. We got 4 bars on Verizon and 3 bars 5G on T-Mobile. We used our T-Mobile Internet versus Starlink. It would not have been an issue to use satellite as there are no mature trees in the campground. They have one large(about 1/4 acre) fenced dog area. The dog park slopes down a hill and connects with a fence that goes around the property. Do not throw small balls down the hill as they can go through the fence and there’s no way to recover the ball due to no openings/gates near by to get to the back of the dog park. There’s also a smaller fenced dog area near the front of the CG. Great customer service before and during our stay.

    Kentucky Horse Park Campground

Nice Campground Right between Lexington and Georgetown

I'll preface this with the fact that I am a Lexington, KY Native and have always lived close to the Kentucky Horse Park and Kentucky Horse Park Campground, but have never stayed there until this weekend.

We stayed on Loop A in site #38.

First, site #38 was a great large and fairly level site with 50AMP hookups and Water. There were no sewer hook ups, but the park has 2 dump stations that accommodate 2 RV/Trailers being dumped at one time. The site had a large amount of space between ourselves and our neighbors and we had a lot of extra space behind out paved site that was grassy. A great area for the kids/pets to run around.

The park has 2 playgrounds (one was closed due to COVID and the sanitizing that would have to be done. The park said they didn't have the staff to sanitize the playground further from the office/store). There is a community pool (it was closed because it isn't memorial day yet and the staff is still trying to determine if it will open this season after being closed all of 2020 due to COVID).

You're able to bring your Golf Cart if you would like but you must get a permit from the campground office/store. They say there is a rule that no one under the age of 16 or anyone without a valid drivers license is allowed to drive the golf carts, but this is clearly not enforced, as my kids were nearly run over (more than once) by young kids speeding around on the gold carts.

The park is great for bike riding and you can travel just a short distance to get to the Legacy Trail (a 12 mile paved trail great from biking/running that runs from the horse park into downtown Lexington). It rained most of the day on Saturday while we were there but in the evening, we got to get the bikes out and go see the horses as they were grazing in the fields.

Right next door, you have the World Famous Kentucky Horse Park. Their trail rides are back open (Ages 7 an older $25.00 per person) and they also have their Pony ride for kids 12 and under ($5 a person) opened back up. You can go visit the different barns, go to the museums, etc.

Just 1 exit north on I75 you have  a Camping World, for all of your camping needs and then 1 exit after that you have a Walmart and Lowes for other things. Many food options as well.

There is a gas station just down Iron Works pike for all of your fuel and and snack needs. Attached to the gas station is also a liquor store.

Your smack in the middle of Georgetown and Lexington which both offer several family friendly Craft Beer Breweries/Taprooms, a lot of great local eating options and bars/nightlife options.

On Holidays now, at the Horse Park Campground, you have to have 5 day minimum stay, which can get a bit pricey.

All around though, great little campsite with easy access to I65/I64.

Guide to Taylorsville

Taylorsville Lake State Park sits within the Salt River basin, an area with limestone ridges and rolling hills typical of Kentucky's Outer Bluegrass region. The 3,050-acre lake reaches depths up to 80 feet and experiences significant water level fluctuations throughout the year. Beyond the main campground, several pet-friendly camping alternatives exist within a 30-mile radius, offering varied terrain and amenities for campers with animals.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Taylorsville Lake contains multiple fish species with designated fishing areas. At Guist Creek Marina & Campground, visitors can purchase fishing licenses on-site. "We took a little canoe ride. The lake is beautiful," notes Brandon E., though he mentions primitive tent sites are positioned close to RV areas.

Historic exploration: The region offers numerous historical sites within short driving distance. My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground provides access to historical attractions. "We took the tour of My Old Kentucky Home, it was amazing," reports John D., who adds, "We will be back to spend time strolling the streets of Bardstown and taking a Distillery Tour."

Trail diversity: Most area campgrounds maintain trail systems with varying difficulty levels. "Some of the hiking trails were well marked and up kept but some others were not," Justin S. cautions about certain paths at Taylorsville Lake. At Charlestown State Park, "We biked throughout the park and hiked 4 of the trails, 3 of which were pretty rugged and all had elevation changes for a good hiking challenge," according to Lisa D.

What campers like

Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the ample space at certain campgrounds. Joe B. says of Taylorsville Lake, "We really enjoyed this park. Plenty of room for camper and car, big grass area and nice bathhouse." Similarly, at Horine Reservation Camping, Robert P. notes "Roomy campsite and room for my son to visit in his car with my van parked inside the campsite. Lots of trees for hammocking."

Clean facilities: Well-maintained bathhouses appear frequently in positive reviews. At Guist Creek, one camper reports, "The shower house was immaculate. Been camping since I was six months old. Don't remember all the shower houses but I've never seen one this clean and well maintained."

Natural settings: Many local campgrounds retain wooded, natural environments despite proximity to urban areas. Bethany W. describes White Acres Campground as "Smaller campground that has huge beautiful trees. Sites are spaced out which has been really nice. Feels more like camping. Very shaded."

What you should know

Site selection matters: Research specific sites before booking. At Charlestown State Park, Andrea notes, "We loved the campground, it was very luscious and beautiful and even though there was a lot of people, it still felt like you had your privacy in your own site."

Wildlife encounters: Beyond raccoons mentioned in the existing description, other wildlife interactions occur. "Awesome wildlife for a park within the city: herons, geese (except for poop), ducks, turtles, beavers," reports Pj F. about Lake Shelby Campground.

Reservation systems: Many campgrounds use different booking platforms with varying information quality. Justin S. notes of Taylorsville Lake: "Unfortunately I couldn't find any pictures online of the sites so the one we got was not private...there was no mention of it on the booking website (Reserve America)."

Tips for camping with families

Playground availability: Many campgrounds offer play areas for children. At Elkhorn Campground, Shaun B. reports, "There is a great deal of things to do with the kids (water wars and different events for them to participate in)." Another visitor adds it's a "Great place for families with young kids."

Site privacy considerations: When camping with children, site selection affects noise levels. At Lake Shelby, Jenny O. found "a beautiful, quiet place, right on the lake...there was an awesome play area for the kids and the shower facilities were clean."

Activity planning: Families should research campground-specific events. Lea B. mentions the Louisville South KOA has a "jump pillow" that children enjoy: "Our son loved the jump pillow, I gave it a try and my knee has been reminding me all day that I'm too old for that!!"

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: RV sites differ significantly between campgrounds. M&P M. note about My Old Kentucky Home: "Many sites were not level and some sites were very short so make sure you review the site description. Also some had sewer hook ups and others did not."

Spacing considerations: RV sites often have different spacing than tent areas. At Louisville South KOA, Craig F. reports, "The sites were close to each other but provided plenty of space for the average sized rig. Many were longer than other KOAs, which enabled the tow vehicle and TT to be parked."

Leveling requirements: Preparation for uneven sites matters for RV campers. Bethany W. advises at My Old Kentucky Home: "Sites are a bit uneven and water and electric is about 40 feet away. Make sure to have levelers to handle 7+ inches. Site 28 seems to be the best."
