Best Campgrounds near Enfield, IL

Southern Illinois offers diverse camping opportunities within an hour's drive of Enfield, with options ranging from developed lakeside sites to primitive forest settings. Hamilton County State Fish and Wildlife Area, located near McLeansboro, provides year-round camping with electric hookups and accommodations for tents, RVs, and cabins. Approximately 20 miles west, Rend Lake features multiple campgrounds including Gun Creek, South Marcum, and the Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground, all offering waterfront sites with various amenity levels. The Shawnee National Forest area, south of Enfield, contains more rustic options including the highly-rated Garden of the Gods Recreation Area with its distinctive sandstone formations and hiking trails.

Camping facilities vary significantly across the region, with most developed sites requiring reservations during peak season from April through October. Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Rend Lake accept America the Beautiful passes for discounted rates, typically charging $10-20 per night for electric sites. As one camper noted, "South Marcum is hands-down the nicest campground on Rend Lake with hundreds of sites to choose from, some tucked into the woods and others sitting right on the lake." Cell service can be spotty in more remote areas, particularly in the Shawnee National Forest. Weather conditions include hot, humid summers and mild springs and falls, with occasional severe storms possible throughout the camping season.

Lakeside camping dominates the region's offerings, with multiple reviewers highlighting water access as a primary attraction. "Anything you'd ever want to enjoy on the water is at your fingertips at Rend Lake," reports one visitor, noting the "hundreds of campsites, marinas with boat rentals, beaches and stores nearby." Sites at Corps of Engineers campgrounds like North and South Sandusky feature spacious layouts with good separation between campers. More primitive options exist in the Shawnee National Forest, where campers report "dark and quiet" nights ideal for stargazing. Fishing opportunities abound throughout the area, with Rend Lake known for crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill. Many campgrounds offer boat ramps and some waterfront sites allow campers to dock boats directly behind their campsites.

    Gun Creek

    Nice!

Nice, large, well thought out campground. Lots of trees, paved sites, bathrooms, showers, and well maintained. Offers full hookups, partial or none. Convenient to I64. Only stayed 1 nite, but would definitely come back.

    Cave-in-Rock State Park

    Beautiful, empty, cheap state park

We are the only campers here in a very well kept campground. The bathrooms are clean and the only sound is from the birds. $20 for a state park site with electricity is incredible. It is out of the way (we took the ferry from Kentucky).

    Benton KOA

    Good KOA

Yes, there is highway noise. It's a KOA. Convenience of being easy off an interstate has its tradeoffs. That said, excellent staff, clean, professional KOA

    Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

    Pretty Lakeside Campground

Nice little campground on Rend Lake. Sites are spread out with long concrete pads. Thera is a bit of a slope to the pads so you will need to level: Lake is very pretty - you could anchor your boat off your campsite. We did not use the bath house so can’t comment on that. Campsites are electric only, so you need to fill you water tank before parking.

    Archway RV Park

    Great service

I called a day in advance and was able to schedule a reservation, the lady on the phone was very nice. Upon arrival I was greeted nicely and checked in quickly. While beginning setup, I noticed an issue with the power at my particular spot and decided to let the staff know of the issue. They offered to move us to another spot and were very nice. The WiFi works great as I was able to stream anything I wanted on Hulu. There is a nice playground and dog park as well as a pond at the location. Great place to stop traveling through or for a weekend.
