      Rend Lake Gun Creek Campground

Many lakeside sites, extra long drives for boat trailers, quiet and scenic

Rend Lake is a large COE recreation area with 4 campgrounds, some with full hook ups for $28 a night, two dams, 2 beaches, several boat launches, a marina, golf course and a restaurant.  Not all facilities were open when we visited in March.  Hiking and biking trails and close to town for gas and bait.  Each site has a stone picnic table and fire ring.  Showers, bathrooms and  playgrounds in multiple places and convenient locations.  Some sites do have steep grade, originally booked Bluejay 48 and moved.

      Wayne Fitzgerrell State Park Campground

      Quiet camping convenient to I-57

Wayne Fitzgerald State Park is on Rend Lake, just off I-57 in Southern Illinois. It’s a great place for camping, fishing and bikes. It’s convenient for a short stop if you are traveling through, or as a destination. Although it’s right off the interstate there is no traffic noise. The campground has 40 tent sites and over 240 modern campsites, which offer electrical hookups, water and sewer facilities. Modern sites are $20/night, with 30/50 amp service. Primitive sites are $6. There is no internet. There are a few pull through sites.. there is lots of room and the sites appear to be level. There are 3 shower buildings. Many sites can be reserved online. There is a playground, and boat ramp. The park has hunting, fishing, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, hiking and boating. there is a golf course nearby and a lodge. Rend Lake is well-known for crappie, particularly in the early spring, as well as largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill.

      Burdette Park

      Nice little sute

Burdette Park is on the west side of Evansville. Really nice park! Currently we are full timing there. They have maybe 24 full huck up spots and about 10 or so w/o sewer. 30/50 amp electric on all. All pads are drive through and very level. They don't have much going on in winter but summertime is great. Pool, trails, BMX racing on Friday nights and tons of shelters for your get-togethers! Wonderful camp managers!

      Timber Ridge Outpost & Cabins

      Not bad

Paid $35 per night for 2 nights after our Passport America discount. Not sure it would have been worth the full price. Full hookups. 50amp, water (55psi), and sewer. Cell coverage for AT&T and Verizon were both adequate to stream and work. The check-in process was a bit slow. We kinda expected that since it took us a dozen calls just to get someone to pick up the phone to make a reservation. We were first in line at check-in and spent at least 10 minutes going over all sorts of rules and information. Luckily we showed up at 3:05pm because they charge $25 for "early check-in" any time before 3pm. We're full-time RVers and have stayed at nearly 140 campgrounds and that's the first time we've seen something before 3pm called "early" and that's a pretty steep price for check-in. Our entire section of the campground was empty. Our neighbors actually showed up at 2pm and opted to wait an hour in the parking lot to go to their un-occupied site rather than paying $25. But besides the check-in, the campground was beautiful. Plenty of tree cover. The roads are paved and easy to navigate. Many of the amenities are closed for covid but there were still people riding around on their bikes. Definitely a bike-centric park with trails and bike paths around. It's not located next door to Traverse City but it's not far to get to most things. We camped at Timber Ridge Campground & Recreation Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

      Arrowhead Lake Campground

      Arrowhead Campground

Very clean, level sites, large lake with a well maintained walking trail. Lake side sites, wooded sites and regular sites in the middle. Water, 30 and 50 amp, shower house, small laundry facility. Wifi fiber being installed, boat ramp, primitive cabin, tent camping, large childrens playground. Very nice, quiet, clean. We come here often. $25.00/night.

      South Sandusky Campground

      5 Star COE

Using your GPS of choice, you can reach this campground off I-57 via Benton or the IL-154/Sesser exit. The area includes both North Sandusky and South Sandusky COE campgrounds, clearly marked and easy to find. We arrived around 2:00 PM and found the check-in gate closed, but since we had a reservation, we proceeded directly to our back-in site 123 with full hookups. Most sites here offer water and electric (50/30/20 AMP), while the Dogwood loop features several full hookup sites in its upper section. Note that the loop has low-sloping ditches on both sides of the road, so precise backing is needed to land on the asphalt pad. There’s one full hookup pull-through site in the Dogwood loop—a long, slightly curved pad with sewer and power connections on the yard side, and water on the standard side. Both North and South Sandusky COE campgrounds offer a wide variety of site types, including lake views, varying utility setups, and well-spaced sites. Paved bike trails run throughout the area. We've been coming here for years, and this campground remains one of our favorites close to home.

      Marion Campground & RV Park

Would come back as a last resort...

This is a stop-over type of campground. The sites are very close together with no privacy. There are some pull-thru sites, which is convenient. It is right next to interstate 57, so unless you're inside your camper, you'll definitely be listening to the highway. This is a pet-friendly campground, and they have a little dog park. They have a shower/laundry facility which is also convenient, especially if you're out on a big trip. Overall, it's certainly not a bad campground, but the highway noise really bothered us.

    Guide to Enfield

RV camping options near Enfield, Illinois sit within the gently rolling landscapes of southeastern Illinois, where elevations range from 350 to 425 feet above sea level. The area experiences humid continental climate with hot summers and mild winters, making camping possible year-round at several facilities. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with stronger coverage near major highways and weaker reception in more remote camping areas.

    What to do

Fishing at Rend Lake: Gun Creek Campground offers excellent fishing access with waterfront sites. "It was a good view, also pretty RV heavy, but tent friendly. Grassy area, fire pit, stone table. The facilities are outdated and don't feel super clean. Easy to reserve and convenient. Because of the lake there are tons of mosquitos, plan accordingly!" notes Brennan M.

Hiking at Garden of the Gods: The stunning rock formations at Pharoah - Garden of the Gods Rec Area Campground create memorable hiking opportunities. "The rock formations are surreal and shoulder season is so quiet! We will be back as the hiking is awesome," shares one camper. The area features 12 first-come, first-served campsites that accommodate tents and smaller RVs.

Boating: Multiple campgrounds provide boat launch access. At Gun Creek, "We've Camped At Gun A Few Times Now And Have Had A Great Experience Every Time!!" writes Dave S. The campground includes "a great boat ramp and boat parking area and close to a nice bike trail!"

    What campers like

Convenient highway access: Many RV campgrounds near Enfield provide easy interstate access. At Archway RV Park, "We travel between Charleston, SC and Omaha, NE several times a year and always stay here on return trip. Long first day drive, but so handy and staff couldn't be more accommodating to our late arrivals. Just far enough from Interstate so noise isn't an issue," explains Robert T.

Clean facilities: Well-maintained grounds make a difference to campers. Marion Campground & RV Park receives praise for its thoughtful amenities: "This campground is laid out very well. The showers/bathrooms are perfectly designed down to a shelf in the shower. We had a late check in and the staff was very understanding."

Fishing amenities: Lakeside RV Campground caters specifically to anglers. "This location is for those who like to fish, right across the road from East Fork Lake. There is an awesome fish cleaning area with a nice table, electric, water, and a sink. The place is very clean and quiet!" reports Reann C.

    What you should know

Site proximity: At many rv campgrounds in Enfield, Illinois area, expect close quarters. At Marion Campground & RV Park, campers note: "The price is right.. the check-in was Friendly and quick and all the hookups! Little swings for the littles and lots of room to walk your dog." However, sites are "very tight spots, even for the pull-through sites."

Noise considerations: Highway noise affects several campgrounds. Gun Creek campers mention: "One of the down sides is that you can clearly hear the highway from the campground, and of course if you have a lake site, you will have plenty of boat noise."

Reservation systems: Several campgrounds operate first-come, first-served. Garden of the Gods has limited availability: "Only downside is that there are only 12 sites, and they are first come, first serve... so you might want to have a second option on a weekend."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground availability: Some campgrounds offer play areas for children. Archway RV Park provides "a nice playground and dog park as well as a pond at the location. Great place to stop traveling through or for a weekend," according to James N.

Campsite selection: Choose sites based on family needs. At Grayville KOA, "It is a fairly new KOA with so many enjoyable amenities, family fun, food, ice cream, mini golf, full hookups and shady spots if you ask for one. We want to go back and stay at a patio lot with a swing."

Bathroom facilities: Bathroom quality varies widely between campgrounds. Gun Creek notes: "I didn't use the facilities, so can't speak to their functionality or cleanliness. I like to camp at lakes because I enjoy kayaking and this lake would allow for all kinds of water activities which is a plus."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: RV campgrounds around Enfield offer different hookup configurations. At Fiedlerland RV Park and Campgrounds, "Tim is sweet and helpful. FHU & water & electric sites. Shower house too," notes Dar D.

Site leveling: Check site grade before booking. Gun Creek campers advise: "Absolutely must check how level the spots are before you book, as lots of sites are over 4 inch incline, which seems ok for Smaller rigs. Good wifi, phone and cable signals."

Adapter requirements: Be prepared with appropriate electrical adapters. Archway RV Park provides "Full-hookups with only a 50amp connection so if you are using 30 make sure you have a 50/30 adapter. Overall very nice campground, well maintained."
