Granite towers and domes rise from high desert terrain at City of Rocks Campground, where sites stretch along the park's loop road for nearly half a mile. The campground operates under a dispersed model, with individual sites tucked between rock formations rather than clustered in a traditional layout. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, though no hookups or water spigots are available at individual spots.
Sites vary dramatically in character and elevation. Christine found site 15 offered "massive rocks through the window over my bed" with views of the valley beyond. Higher elevation sites in Area 7 sit over 1,000 feet above the main park area, creating noticeable temperature differences. The dispersed layout means campers often experience significant privacy, with rock walls naturally screening sites from each other.
Rock climbing dominates activities here, with routes accessible directly from many campsites. Water is available at two locations - the Bath Rock pump and the dump station near the entrance - but campers must walk to these points. Pit toilets are positioned throughout the campground and consistently receive positive mentions for cleanliness. Cell service remains limited, though some Verizon users report reception from elevated rock formations.
The campground fills quickly from May through October, requiring advance reservations. Cory Michaela D. notes the sites "are well maintained but still feel organic and don't encroach on the wildlife." Wind can be significant in this exposed terrain, and the high desert location means dramatic temperature swings between day and night. Note that pets are not permitted in this National Reserve.
For additional group camping options, Twin Sisters Group Campsite and Bread Loaves Group Campsite operate nearby within the same reserve system.
