West Point Lake provides a network of pet-friendly camping options near Wildwood, Georgia. Located along the Chattahoochee River at the Georgia-Alabama border, campsites range from 600-703 feet elevation with most situated directly on the shoreline. Many campgrounds operated by the Army Corps of Engineers feature spacious sites with water and electric hookups where dogs can access the lake from gentle, sloping banks.
What to do
Kayaking from shoreline sites: At Whitetail Ridge Campground, campers can launch kayaks directly from their sites. "We slid our kayaks in right by our campsite. Very clean and friendly staff," notes Wendy W.
Hiking the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail: The trail passes through Amity Campground with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. "The Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail goes thru the park which is a great hike. Lots of wildlife to see," writes Amanda D.
Visit historic attractions: Located near Pine Mountain RV Resort, Callaway Gardens and the Wild Animal Safari are popular day trips. "Very close to Calloway Gardens, FDR State Park, and Animal Safari! Nice quiet and clean sites," reports Cari P.
What campers like
Spacious waterfront sites: R. Shaefer Heard Campground offers generous lakeside sites. "Lake sites are huge and well spaced out with plenty of shade and privacy, others seemed packed in (as with most parks)," notes a camper named Ward.
Private coves for swimming: Many campers value the secluded water access at Three Creeks Campground. "My favorite spots are 115 & 116. They are next to the restroom, and they are secluded in a private cove," explains Jan P.
Late checkout options: Some campgrounds offer extended departure times. "Late checkout (3pm) was so nice. Overall, a great campground. Will definitely return in the future," says Dianna B. about her experience at R. Shaefer Heard.
What you should know
Gate closure restrictions: Several campgrounds restrict vehicle access overnight. "They lock the gate at 10, sharp, and tend to have some trouble with sewerage during rainy seasons," warns Jan P. about Holiday Campground.
Limited cell service: Connectivity varies throughout the area. "Verizon was weak over most of the property talk and text ok but data not so much," reports Ward about R. Shaefer Heard.
Bathroom maintenance varies: Facility quality differs significantly between campgrounds. "The bathrooms are all spotless and each area has a camp host constantly cleaning," says Everette G. about Franklin D Roosevelt State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Choose sites with playground access: Franklin D Roosevelt State Park Campground offers family-friendly amenities. "We camped in campground 5 and from where our site was we could see the playground and also let our kids ride there bikes around the circle," explains Joshua H.
Tent campers should select specific sites: For tent camping with children, certain spots offer better water access. "We had spot 96 and we tent camped. The spot was recommended in another review and it was wonderful. Right beside the water so the kids were able to play in the water most of the time," shares Justin W.
