Montgomery area campgrounds provide diverse sites for RVs and tent campers within central Alabama's coastal plains. The region sits at approximately 240 feet above sea level with mild winters that extend the camping season compared to more northern locations. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F from June through September, making shade and water access important considerations.
What to do
Water recreation at Gunter Hill: The campground sits along the Alabama River with fishing access and boat launches. "We stayed overnight on site 35. It has full hookups, however the sewer was a bit far from the paring pad. If you have a single black tank hose this may be an issue," notes Richard A. about Gunter Hill.
Visit the dog park: The Backyard RV Resort features a dedicated area for dogs to play off-leash. "Also has a very nice fenced in dog park for off leash play time. Our AT&T had 5 bars and streamed videos with no problem. Verizon had 4 bars as well," reports Stephanie about The Backyard RV Resort.
Enjoy family recreation: Camp Sherrye offers multiple activities. "They boast a kayak launch, but I'm assuming the river may have washed it out a bit… We wouldn't use it due to the rocky drop off at the end. They have a large dog run, but it is connected to the playground," explains Brittany V. about her experience at Camp Sherrye.
What campers like
Concrete pads and site spacing: Gunter Hill's renovated sites offer stability for all equipment. "We had a nice stay in site 67. The campground was renovated sometime in the not too distant past with large concrete pads, as well as water and electrical hook ups. Many sites have full hook ups, all at a reasonable price," writes Ian D.
Reliable utilities and amenities: Montgomery South RV Park maintains clean facilities and helpful staff. "Staff is wonderful, campstore is well stocked. Sites are all full hookup pull through. Restrooms smelled like Men's showerhouses and laundry facility was dirty," notes Brandie B., offering a balanced perspective.
Security features: Many campgrounds offer security measures that campers appreciate. "We feel safe here with the hidden location and security cameras. Our dogs enjoyed the dog park and walks through the woods and around the lake," shares Denise about The Backyard RV Resort.
What you should know
Military base rules apply: Maxwell-Gunter AFB FamCamp operates differently than public campgrounds. "Relvery plays at 6:30 am, Star Spangled Banner at 5:00pm, and TAPS at 9pm, not offensively loud, kinda like it," explains Victoria G. about the daily bugle calls.
Seasonal considerations: Winter camping offers particular advantages in the Montgomery area. "In New England it's challenging to find a campground that is open in late November/early December but that's certainly not the case in the south! Sometimes I experience the opposite problem, tons of people everywhere thanks to the warmer weather," notes Sarah C.
Wildlife encounters: Some campgrounds feature animal residents. "The host is so welcoming! Clean restrooms. The baby goats were a fun little surprise!" writes Jena S. about her stay at Jackson Lake Towne of Spectre.
Tips for camping with families
Entertainment options: Kick Back Ranch offers numerous activities included with your stay. "Nestled back in the woods this hidden gem is a find! Very clean, friendly staff, tons of free activities with stay, and fun for the entire family!" reports Adam T.
Safari experiences: The Alabama Safari Park is located near some campgrounds. "Tip for travelers with kids: If you are trying to burn time with kids, the safari park is nearby and was a great way to burn some energy," suggests Kristen M. about activities near Montgomery South RV Park.
Multi-generational gatherings: Some locations accommodate family reunions well. "We stayed at Kickback Ranch over the Christmas holiday, and it was the perfect setup for our family. I reserved an RV site for my teardrop camper—it was peaceful, quiet, and had everything I needed to unwind. I also booked a few cabins for the rest of the family," explains Pete G.
Tips from RVers
Hookup positions: Site layouts vary between campgrounds. "The sewer was a bit far from the paring pad. If you have a single black tank hose this may be an issue," warns Richard A. about Gunter Hill.
Internet reliability: Connectivity varies significantly between parks. "Strong wifi signal. The entire staff was extremely courteous and very helpful," reports Tim G. about his stay at Kick Back Ranch.
Pull-through site availability: Capital City RV Park offers convenient access. "Spaces are a little tight, but had our own patio and typical campground layout. Lots of long timers. Hosts/Owners were really nice and accommodating," notes Gordon D. about the spaces.
