Best RV Parks & Resorts near Carters Lake

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several RV parks provide full hookup sites near Carters Lake, Georgia. Talona Ridge RV Resort in East Ellijay features pull-through sites with water, sewer, and electric connections, accommodating large rigs with spacious pads. "We were on a very nice end site with plenty of yard space where our rally friends gathered for evening fires," noted one camper about their stay at Talona Ridge. Diamond Lure Campground in Ellijay offers RV sites with 30-amp service, water hookups, and a sanitary dump station, while 411 River Rest Campground provides riverside RV sites with full hookups. Fort Mountain State Park Campground has more limited RV facilities but includes electric hookups and nearby dump stations for motorhomes.

Access to most RV parks requires navigating mountain roads with occasional sharp turns and elevation changes. Diamond Lure's entrance features a lake view with mostly level sites, though some back-ins require careful maneuvering. Cell service varies significantly across the region, with Fort Mountain State Park having virtually no reception in the campground areas, while Talona Ridge provides above-average WiFi and good cellular coverage. Fall is peak season for RV camping in the area due to apple festivals and foliage viewing, necessitating reservations weeks or months in advance. Many parks remain open year-round with varying amenities—Talona Ridge has multiple laundry facilities, pet areas, and swimming pools, while others offer more basic services with beautiful natural settings.

    Chattanooga North-Cleveland KOA

    Clean, Quiet, Friendly

Friendly Staff, Clean Bathrooms, Convenient Location. No honeywagon for water and electric only sites, but dump station in campground. Some very nice private sites and none of the sites except maybe a few look very small or tight- pretty spread out. Lots of tent sites. You definitely hear the highway here, but not a big concern for us. Pet friendly with a very nice dog park. Pool for the kids. Playground is little more than a residential style wood swingset, but it kept the kids entertained.

    Shoal Creek Campground

Beautiful lake front AND lake view camping spots; friendly staff

This was our first RV camping experience -- testing out a new pop-up camper during a two (2) night stay. Reservations were made through Campspot -- about $120 with fees. Communication with the main number for the campground went through the Margaritaville Campground nearby. Separate direct lines to the camp office and security were provided after arrival. Overall communication was good with both, and the staff were always polite.

We skipped our first night reservation due to high winds. We had concerns about damaging the pop-up roof during first-time setup. We decided, instead, to visit the campsite we'd reserved and pick up our paperwork. Site 56 was our first choice, and we were NOT happy with it. I selected the wrong size on the Campspot website -- a 20' campsite. It was not big enough to park both the camper AND the tow vehicle, AND the camper would've been facing away from the lake anyway with water and electrical hookups.

The next morning, we called to arrange for a different site. The camp office was very accommodating and blocked off four (4) available sites to choose from. We moved to site 55, which was a large circular pull through. Probably too big for our pop-up camper, but also probably too close to trees for a larger trailer or even a 5th wheel. The campsite was large, with the picnic table, fire ring and sand pit away from the camper. There was lots of room to set up and enjoy the beautiful lake views.

Electric and water hookups worked just fine. The camp office lent a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter free of charge. We had no issues with either service. The showers and bathrooms were about 2-3 sites down and up the road from 55, and they were reasonably clean for what they were.

I WAS disappointed that the main gate was broken, and the key code locks on the showers and bathrooms were duct taped shut. However, I did not feel that the campground was all that insecure, and there did not appear to be a lot of traffic coming through. Security DID come through overnight on Sunday morning -- probably due to some noise at 1-2 of the campsites across the cove from ours. Things quieted down after. The camp host was cleaning bathrooms on Sunday morning, and he was very polite when we talked. I saw him regularly coming through to check on campsites and clean up.

Overall, we liked this campground and will be going back. I will likely request to scout out some different sites in person before selecting one, as I don't want to be in a position to have to give up my spot when it's very busy.

    Winding Waters RV Resort

    More vacation than camping

Winding Waters is a new, huge, and beautiful RV resort. This is not a campground, but a resort-style RV park with no shortage of amenities and activities. Nightly rate is very reasonable for all the bells and whistles you get. If you are just looking for a cheap, relaxing overnight with no frills, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a fun family vacation spot to bring the kids, look no further.

Just outside Atlanta, the location is prime and beautiful, along the Etowah river. You can fish, kayak, or just relax. There is no shortage of activities for children. The resort's pool is a huge beach-style pool with a hot tub and even a huge waterslide. There is a large playground and huge dog run. They have a large clubhouse and ball courts.

We booked one of their cheaper sites, a classic pull-thru site. To say the least, it was the TIGHTEST pull thru site we have ever booked. We have never had to adjust and shimmy around in a pull thru site before, the whole point is to pull in once and bam you're set up. We could barely even squeeze our tow vehicle (10ft bed dually) into the designated parking spot without sticking out. Even the back in sites would have been a little more roomy. But hey, for all the amenities (that we didn't even use since we were just stopping over for a night) the price isn't awful. For a bit more, you can get your own private dog run or patio furniture.

We were pretty overwhelmed with the sheer amount of RVs in this place. Mostly all big rigs too. It was packed and they have so many sites. So many kids running around, and our neighbor's dog was off leash and ran over to my dog when I tried to take him potty. There are no walking paths in the resort, so people (and kids) are forced to run around on the streets, which are pretty narrow, winding, and uncomfortable to drive a big rig on. Just in general A LOT going on, very busy place. Great place if you like resort style parks, but not fun for an overnight. Since it's new there's no shade at all, so I can't imagine how hot it is in the summer and with all the big rigs blasting their a/c, they may run into electrical issues. But they planted some trees which should alleviate that a bit.

The rules list is pretty strict and extensive, with a bunch of extra fees for weird things like early check-in and personal golf carts. Make sure you read through everything thoroughly before you book. Some rules might be deal breakers for some people. Staff was very kind to us and we wish them the best with their new RV resort!

    Persimmon Creek RV Park

    Convenient access with comfortable amenities!

Let me start out by saying this was our first campground for our travel trailer.  I don't have a huge point of reference, but I can give you details on everything that was smooth

    • Location - Just off a 4 lane highway.  Convenient with easy access to your site.  Plenty of room to back in to your spot.  There were limited "pull-through" sites.  During the day you can hear highway traffic, but at night that road gets little traffic so it is quiet.
    • The owners are great!  This is a mom & pop operation but you can tell they put their heart into this place.  Both are friendly and accomodating
    • Sites are very spacious.  Our spot was freshly mowed, had a picnic table, fire pit, electric & water hookups.  We had a small stream behind and a pond in front of us.   The site we occupied had trees between our neighbors.  Just enough privacy to not worry if someone was looking in your windows.
    • While I didn't use their public restrooms, my wife said they were VERY VERY clean.  She worked in a hospital for a long time, so if she says they are clean, they are clean.  There were showers available but we did not use them.
    • They have firewood for $5 a bundle.  They encourage you to not bring firewood from other places in order to help prevent bug/disease spread (very common nowadays)
    • Two ponds for fishing.  One was closed till the weather is cooler.  I'm guessing they stock it with trout.
    • LOTS of hiking trails within a short drive.  We visited the Ocoee River and Copper Basin TN.  Easy day trip for hiking, biking, rafting, breweries, restaurants, etc.

We will definitely visit this spot again.  It's about an hour and 15 minutes from our house but feels like we are further.  Very convenient and worth it for $30 per night. $30 was the RV rate, check their website for the most up to date pricing.

    Twin Lakes RV Park

A place to park with no bath, no amenities and mostly long term residents

The 5 star reviews are perplexing. We're not new to RVing and have stayed in plenty of lovely mom& pop parks. This is a family owned campground, but it is basically a parking lot with hookups for people who live there long term. Our site was on the side of a road about 50 yards away from the Dump Station. It was referred to as a premium, pull through rather than what it is... a pull to the side of the road. There was no grass or picnic table. I'll post pictures that show the condition of our site and how close the spots are to one another. The pictures online and YouTube videos of this park are very deceiving. The grassy areas beside and between the lakes can only be accessed by walking though other camper's sites.

** Use caution navigating the park because the roads at the back have no way to turn around if you get back there.

    Battlefield Campground & RV Park

    Woodsy Wayside

Battlefield Campground is an extremely convenient RV park located right of I-75 about 20 minutes south of Chattanooga. It is very easy to get to, but part of that convenience comes with an absence of quiet; the interstate runs directly beside the campground, and is visible from the storage sites across from sites 11-24.

This is an excellent place for long-term campers, and it includes a nice playground, a pool, and a camp store/clubhouse. We could not get close to the pool or playground as they were closed due to COVID-19, which was comforting that they are taking public safety seriously. Sites include 50 and 30 amp full service, and seven tent sites in the middle of the campground that also include electric. There are seven camping cabins spaced throughout the campground that have outside picnic tables and grills, and beds inside as well as electricity.

Most of the sites here are nicely wooded, and as the area is slightly hilly there are elevation changes between several rows of sites which allows for a little more privacy than many RV parks offer.

Downsides to this park are the highway noise, and the campground roads are paved but in need of maintenance; the road is eroded in a lot of places.

Upsides are the sites are shady and well landscaped, and there are great amenities for families looking to stay here for extended periods of time, as well as the proximity to Chattanooga, Chickamauga Battlefield, and Ringold/Ft. Oglethorpe.

    411 River Rest Campground

Very nice campground in N. Georgia

For summer vacation, my family wanted to spend one day rafting the Ocoee River and one day at Six Flags in Atlanta. We picked this campground due to its location in between and within an 1-1.5hr drive of both activities. Turned out to be a great decision!

Pros: VERY nice facilities (camp store, bath houses, playground), hospitable owners/staff, kid & pet friendly

Cons: the provided Wi-Fi was unreliable on back edge of campground (AT&T cell signal was fine)

Guide to Carters Lake

RV campgrounds around Carters Lake offer campers access to North Georgia's mountain landscape at approximately 1,200 feet elevation. Located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, the area combines lake recreation with mountain exploration across seasonal temperature shifts from warm 85°F summers to cooler 50°F fall camping days. Sites range from primitive to full-hookup facilities serving campers throughout the region.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Carters Lake provides 3,200 acres of deep water fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, and walleye. At Diamond Lure Campground, campers can fish directly from the property. "Diamond Lure is a hidden gem at the foothills of the N. GA mountains. Scenery is wooded and rustic with a tranquil lake on the property," notes Donald G.

Hiking trails: Multiple trail systems connect camping areas with scenic mountain views. "We love this campground! Large private sites throughout... 25 miles of hiking and biking trails starting right from our campsite," reports Katrin S. about Chilhowee Recreation Area.

Water activities: Swimming beaches and boating access points surround Carters Lake. "There's a little beach to swim in or go fishing, etc. There are gorgeous, peaceful walking trails that are decorated really well," shares Heather L. about her experience at Diamond Lure Campground.

Mountain drives: The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway and nearby apple orchards provide day trip options. "It's in close proximity to multiple apple farms, vineyards and Amicalola Falls," observes Donald G.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Campers consistently mention the spacing between sites as a positive feature. At Whitewater RV Park - Ocoee TN, "The sites are level and concrete with a nice fire pit," according to Justin.

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness ranks high in camper reviews. "Bathhouse was clean and well lit. Roads around the loops were narrow but there were big 5th wheel rigs so its doable," notes Tracy J. about Chilhowee Recreation Area.

Pet amenities: Several campgrounds offer specific dog-friendly features. "The grounds are super clean. There are walking trails, a lake, a beach, and they even have things for dogs! (Dog bath, dog beach, dog park, ect)," shares Corey G. about Diamond Lure Campground.

Evening gatherings: Social opportunities around fire rings rate highly. At Parksville Lake RV Campground, "Several sites offer the opportunity for two R.V.'s to camp close together and some are located along a small stream," notes one camper.

What you should know

Site selection limitations: Some RV parks assign sites rather than allowing selection. "You do not get to pick your site. You get to pick what style of site but the exact site... We felt not much thought was given especially after being there and seeing many sites available in our section that would have fit our trailer and vehicles," explains Logan S. about Talona Ridge RV Resort.

Road conditions: Mountain access roads require careful navigation. "To get to this campground you have to go up a steep narrow windy mountain road. The camp sites are distanced well and the entire campground is in the shade," cautions Carissa D.

Variable water pressure: Water systems can fluctuate by campground section. "From talking to other campers in this area, some had lower water pressure and took their regulators off," reports MickandKarla W.

Event reliability: Scheduled activities may not always happen as advertised. "I'm deeply disappointed with the resort's lack of planning and execution of their advertised schedule of events. Despite listing happy hour, bingo, and a margarita cart on their itinerary, none of these activities took place as promised," shares Chris M.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Multiple campgrounds feature swimming areas for children. "Our visit was nice, the park was clean and the bathrooms were clean and well lit," notes Ben B. about Parksville Lake.

Playground access: Some RV parks near Carters Lake include playground equipment. "This is a great place to stay. Staff is very nice and accommodating. All areas are really clean. Lake to fish or hike," reports Brian W. about Whispering Pines Campground.

Festival timing: Plan around apple festivals for additional family activities. "Loved this campground! We went during the Ellijay apple festival, so they were busy, but the campground was great! Great view of the lake and staff is so helpful and nice!" shares Gretchen about Diamond Lure Campground.

Creek-side sites: Request sites along water features for added entertainment. "Our site backed up to the creek, which we really enjoyed," mentions Bea about Whispering Pines Campground.

Tips from RVers

Satellite reception: Most rv campgrounds near Carters Lake have satellite access due to limited tree cover. "There are not a lot of mature trees so satellite was not a problem. We got 4 bars on Verizon and the CG WiFi was above average for a park of this size," reports MickandKarla W. about Talona Ridge RV Resort.

Utility placement: RV site utilities vary in location and accessibility. "The utilities are at the middle of the pad so you can adjust according to your needs," notes MickandKarla W.

Size limitations: Different loops accommodate varying RV lengths. In Battlefield Campground & RV Park, "Most of the sites here are nicely wooded, and as the area is slightly hilly there are elevation changes between several rows of sites which allows for a little more privacy than many RV parks offer," explains Stephanie J.

Cellular connectivity: Service varies significantly by carrier and location. "There is no WiFi or AT&T cellular signal in this park. However, if you drive to any of the scenic overlooks just outside the park, you will get AT&T LTE signal," advises Manie D.
