Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Destin, FL

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Henderson Beach State Park Campground allows pets at all 60 sites with private, gravel camping areas surrounded by natural vegetation. Located in Destin, campsites include water and electric hookups, picnic tables, and fire rings, with pets permitted throughout the campground. Topsail Hill Preserve State Park Campground and Camp On The Gulf also welcome pets, offering varied accommodation options from tent camping to cabins and RV sites. Campers report the sites at Henderson Beach are spacious and private, with enough room to set up pet areas away from neighboring campsites. Most campgrounds in the area maintain standard pet policies requiring leashes no longer than 6 feet, proper waste disposal, and pets that don't disturb other campers with excessive barking.

The nature trail at Henderson Beach State Park provides a ¾-mile pet-friendly walking path through coastal scrub habitat. While dogs aren't permitted on Henderson Beach itself, the campground's location in the heart of Destin provides quick access to nearby pet services, including a public dog park approximately 1½ miles from the campground. Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park offers additional pet-friendly camping options with trails where leashed pets can explore. Campers note the temperature variation can affect pets, with summer heat requiring extra water and shade considerations. Many campsites feature enough vegetation between sites to provide privacy and natural areas for pets to investigate while remaining on leash at designated campsites.

They have a club house with pool table, board games, puzzles and more every Thursday you can enjoy!

Eastern Lake Campground 1 — Point Washington State Forest

    Wonderful nature retreat!

We camped here on our vacation and LOVED it! It’s not far from Destin and other popular locations, but it’s a gem itself! There’s plenty room to walk and explore, the trails are very well kept up and clean, and it’s beautiful all around. I will say that the mud holes are huge and you definitely don’t want to take a small car through it, that’s the only downfall.

Fort Pickens Campground — Gulf Islands National Seashore

    Good but not very private

We went tent camping for two nights with our pups at Fort Pickens and we really did enjoy it. The campground was nice and clean. They had nice showers and potties as well. The showers in the RV section have better shower heads btw. The beaches are gorgeous! A tip for travelers with pets, FL does not allow dogs on their beaches accept in specific "dog park" locations. Our dogs are not.. eh, normal .. so we ended up driving down to a private beach so they could enjoy the ocean. There is a lot of night life but We decided to skip that this trip. We enjoyed the beaches in the park at night and i highly recommend it! All in all we enjoyed our trip but we probably won't be back to Fort Pickens campground. The sites are very close together and we had a very nosey and drunk neighbor who really wanted to chat. We camp to get away from people, just saying. We were also bothered by RV and truck lights shining directly into our tent both nights from people driving through the campground. Not the best but we enjoyed camping at the beach.

    Raccoon River Campground

An adventurous paradise away from the ocean paradise

I have read a lot of the reviews. I think some of these people had other issues that caused them to give a bad review. Yes, this is known as a cat haven but with people who have dogs should stay in the dog parks, If they don't accept a place that cannot turn a blind eye to cats. This is an RV park and a campground and I'm not sure why people would expect more luxury than the outdoors experience. This is a beautiful getaway away from the ocean but right next door, and people would love this place if they knew the history behind it and maybe honor it a little bit more. The impact from people that don't like this place gives it a bad reputation. Why listen to someone who don't want you to know about the experience? Just want you to know what they think about it. This is a great place and there are a lot of hardworking, honest people. This is not just a campground, people are residents here and have been here a long time, some would even call it home. There's nothing wrong with anything about this place. It is a wonderful place to be.

    Destin Army Recreation Area

Campground open to military and retirees and thier guests

Awesome campground open to Active Duty/Reserve military, retirees, and their guests. The have 3 and 2 bedroom villas, studio rooms, and a hotel, in addition to some RV sites. The RV sites are limited (30 or so). Very clean, right on Choctawhatchee Bay, less than 5 minutes drive from Destin Harbor. They have a nice clean pool and splash area for kids, a boat ramp and marina where you can rent boats, and a 300' fishing pier. They have a playground for the kids and a community shelter with access to grills. A few minutes from a military exclusive beach also. This place fills up fast for the price. The RV area can get pretty tight at times.

    Open Pond Campground

    Open Pond

The campground is nicely maintained. The bath houses are not the cleanest, but not anywhere near the worst I have seen. But definitely not Buc-ee’s level. LOL But for $16 a day and an hour from Destin you can’t beat that. You can fish the pond (large) for catfish, brim, bass, and one other I don’t remember. Hiking trails are kept in great condition with the exception of a couple of spots. Blue Springs is a short hike and is crystal clear and cool to swim in. RVs can stay in C and D loops.

Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park Campground

    Beautiful campground

Stayed here for 10 nights during Thanksgiving 2025 and it was an amazing experience. Very clean atmosphere and everyone who works here is so friendly! You can tell the people work here love nature and their jobs. There’s water and electric hookups, bath house with restrooms and showers, a dump station, parks for littlest ones to play, LOTS of hiking trails, places to fish and they are dog friendly. Also, 20 minutes away from Destin beach. We’re new with rv life and this was our second campground and so far the best. We will definitely be back!!

There was one thing but doesn’t involve the campground and the lovely people who work here. We left to go spend Thanksgiving on the beach and when we returned our water hose was gone. We asked the front desk who then asked the park rangers and they both said they did not take it. They were very kind and apologized as we should not have to worry about someone stealing our belongings. They told us they’ll keep a look out and ask around. Again we’re new to this life style and have learned a lesson and this wasn’t on the campground or the people who work here. We’re very thankful for everyone’s help.

    Pensacola Beach RV Resort

    Not Happy this stay

This is our 3rd time here we pay a lot of extra money for premium site only to find out that they have a tiki bar directly behind us . Partly spoiling our view but the worst part is lots of people walking through our site to get to bar . This includes workers at bar pulling through supplies on carts . People drunk outside our camper cursing and swearing at night . We came for beautiful relaxing time not happening . The place looks lovely and we have enjoyed it immensely until this time . Also people not using dog park and dogs shitting on our premium site . Next to us had a family that had 4 RVs and they all congregated at the one beside us taking over part of our lot . I couldn’t hardly use my outdoor shower without 20 or more people there . This place has really changed . We won’t be back will look in destin probably for the future.

Topsail Hill Preserve State Park Campground

One of our favorites in our home state!

We have stayed here several times. We love it! Little pool, dog park, beach close by, tons of biking, deer, turkeys, birds galore. Highly recommend the Donut Hole for breakfast, brunch or lunch! So good! Service was awesome!

Guide to Destin

Tent and RV camping options near Destin provide access to both Gulf Coast beaches and inland waterways throughout the year. The climate remains mild with average daytime temperatures ranging 60-90°F seasonally, though summer humidity levels frequently exceed 80%. Campgrounds in the area typically feature sandy soil conditions requiring sturdy tent stakes and ground tarps during setup.

What to do

Beach swimming: 2 blocks from Destin RV Beach Resort. The location provides quick access to Gulf waters with public restrooms available at beach access points. "We stayed at site 44 and it was private and near the bathrooms. There's a path to the beach from the bathhouse," notes Elizabeth G. from Henderson Beach State Park Campground.

Paddling on Western Lake: The inland waterways at Grayton Beach State Park Campground offer protected paddling opportunities. "We were able to put our kayaks in right off the site," reports Aida K. The park features both coastal dune lakes and Gulf access through a single trail system.

Trail exploration: Topsail Hill Preserve trails connect coastal dunes with freshwater lakes. "Cool shorter hiking trails to take you to lakes or the gulf, or as we call it Lake Florida now," writes Travis D. The hiking system includes approximately 3.5 miles of maintained pathways through scrub habitats.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: The vegetation barriers between campsites create separation from neighbors. "The sites are luscious and private," reports Lynn A. about Henderson Beach State Park Campground. The natural scrub creates visual barriers between camping areas.

Access to multiple water bodies: The combination of bay and Gulf access from a single location appeals to water enthusiasts. "Right on Choctawhatchee Bay, less than 5 minutes drive from Destin Harbor," explains Jason B. from Destin Army Recreation Area. This allows for both calm water activities and Gulf experiences.

Clean facilities: The consistently well-maintained bathhouses receive positive feedback across locations. "The bathrooms were very clean and well maintained throughout our stay," notes Tony C. The facilities typically include hot water showers and flush toilets with regular maintenance schedules.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Securing spots requires advance planning due to high demand. "Book well in advance it's very popular!" advises Larry from Henderson Beach State Park. Most campgrounds open reservation windows 11 months in advance.

Site specifications vary: Not all sites accommodate the same equipment configurations. "Pay attention to the size site you reserve some of them are more narrow and less deep than others. It can make backing in a challenge," cautions Andrea W. from Camp On The Gulf.

Military-only options: Some of the area's campgrounds restrict access to military personnel and their guests. "These military sites are not open to the public and you have to have to either be currently serving or a veteran to use the space," explains Asher K. regarding Mid Bay Shores Recreation Area.

Tips for camping with families

Kids' activities: Many dog-friendly campgrounds near Destin offer scheduled children's programs. "The week we were there they had a different activity for the kids each day. They had painting sand dollars, bubba the alligator show, face painting and even an Easter egg hunt," shares Monica G. from Camp On The Gulf.

Open play spaces: Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park Campground provides designated recreation areas. "Park has boating ramp to the bayou. Close to beaches in Destin, yet away from the hustle and bustle," notes Kim B. The campground maintains separate play areas away from camping loops.

Family shower rooms: Some facilities offer private family bathroom options. "Family showers are also available, which is very helpful with little kids," adds Kim B. These units typically include toilet, sink and shower facilities in a single lockable room.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Be prepared for minor leveling challenges at some locations. "We required a couple of blocks to achieve level but still very good for an all gravel site," advises Tony C. Most sites feature crushed shell or gravel pads requiring minimal adjustment.

Site selection strategy: When visiting Topsail Hill Preserve State Park Campground, specific site locations offer different benefits. "We were at one of the few 'tent' campsites in the park. Our site was back off the road in the brush - very private even with a trail just on the other side of the bushes," explains John O. The campground features both open and secluded site options.

Beach transport options: Getting gear to beaches often requires planning. "We also rented a cart buggy to haul our stuff to and from the beach for $5 a day and it came in handy taking laundry to the laundry area," notes Monica G. Several campgrounds offer equipment rental services for beach access.
