Camping opportunities around Norwich present diverse options across Connecticut's eastern woodlands. The region sits within the Thames River watershed where elevations range from sea level to around 500 feet, creating varied terrain for campsites. Summer temperatures typically reach highs in the 80s with high humidity from June through August, while spring and fall camping offers milder conditions with fewer crowds.
What to do
Water recreation access: At Hopeville Pond State Park Campground, paddle sports are popular on the scenic pond. "We launched our kayaks from the day use area because the campground boat launch was extremely crowded. From here, we paddled south to the end of the pond and up the Pachaug River, eventually reaching the dam at Pachaug Pond. It's an 8 mile paddle with some tricky spots to navigate, but very pretty!"
Hiking trails: Trails throughout the Norwich area vary in difficulty. At Hopeville Pond, the network provides moderate terrain. "This park also has plenty of trails for hiking and geocaching. The pond has some really big fish, but it's heavily covered with lily pads and there are a lot of submerged trees."
Weekend activities: Strawberry Park schedules regular entertainment for campers. "Bingo every night, and more activities than you could possibly do! The kids ride their bikes to the sports fields, the rec center for the pool and activities. Oh and my young children LOVE the air pillow, they have spent hours on there."
Beach access: Many campgrounds include swimming areas. "There is a nice open field for activities. We tubed down river, fished the pond, swam in the pool, did the hay ride, even attended the dance at night."
Proximity to attractions: Campgrounds near Norwich provide convenient access to regional highlights. "The location of the campground was great as it was easy to find, close to a grocery store, and more importantly close enough to our favorite town in Connecticut allowing us the opportunity to visit the ocean, go out to dinner and enjoy the local stores."
What campers like
Large, shaded sites: Waters Edge Family Campground receives praise for spacious sites. "Most amazing weekend with tons of woods (privacy is huge for us)... We've been to campgrounds with playgrounds worse than the waters edge dog park. Every one of us had a great time with the perfect campsite deep in the woods (still able to park my 26' camper trailer)."
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain quality amenities. "The campground staff did a great job managing the Covid regulations... We were able to use the pool, facilities and the store and never felt that we were compromised."
Waterfront options: Several campgrounds offer premium lakefront sites. "The gem is the canoe sites at the north of the campground. These are tent only. You park and walk about 100 yards to the site. There are only four sites in this secluded section of the campground. Sites CN02, CN03 and CN04 have direct waterfront on the pond."
Swimming options: Both natural and pool swimming are available. "In season there is swimming, but the beach is very small. Fishing, canoeing, and kayaking are also popular. There are also some trails for walking/hiking, a basketball hoop, a dump station, and recycling."
Food amenities: Some campgrounds offer on-site dining. "Definitely be sure to grab a snack at the food hit they have. Very good food. Also great general store. Back at the campsite it still gives you that roughing it camping feel."
What you should know
Site variations: Burlingame State Park Campground offers diverse site types. "Hundreds of sites, some level some not, some dirt sites, some grassy, some with a ton of shade, some out in the open, excellent for bikes, there are in-camp roads, so big you can get lost(sorta), store was good."
Weekend noise levels: Be prepared for busier weekends at some locations. "Quiet hours are merely a suggestion, and folks turn up until 4AM on Friday nights. Music blaring from disrespectful campers until 10PM. Fights and arguments can be heard from across the campground."
Bathroom conditions: Quality varies widely between campgrounds. "Bathhouses and toilets were not as cleaned as I would have liked but passable. Coronavirus social distancing required."
Weather considerations: Spring camping can be wet. "When my family went here it poured! And we were thankful that there were so many things to do, painting ceramics, karaoke, an arcade."
Pet restrictions: Some state parks limit pet access. "Pets are not allowed at this campground!" Always check specific pet policies before booking pet-friendly camping near Norwich.
Tips for camping with families
Look for dedicated activity areas: Rocky Neck State Park Campground provides family-friendly spaces. "Every campsite has its own fire pit with a grill attachment and a picnic table. My site was tent only and you couldn't pull your car up to the site so unloading and loading was a hassle. Beach is a short drive on site and the showers were one site over."
Reserve early for holiday weekends: Popular times fill quickly. "We decided to stay a weekend here because my sister lives right down the road. We had no idea how great of a spot she had right nextdoor. We kind of did a last min trip between 3 family's we all got separate sites scattered along the river it was beautiful."
Consider event weekends: Special themed weekends offer extra entertainment. "We went two years in a row each on Halloween! They had great amenities and activities for the kids. Plus a costume contest and tricker treating. Very enjoyable time."
Pack for cool nights: Even in summer, evenings can cool significantly. "Sites include one paved parking spot (ours was very muddy) a fire pit and a picnic table. No water or electric hookup. Wi-fi not available at this campground."
Tips from RVers
Marina camping alternative: Crocker's Boatyard offers unique waterfront RV parking. "We had a spot right next to the pool and the docks. Very convenient. The staff does a great job."
Site selection matters: Choose sites based on your privacy preference. "We snagged a late reservation over a busy summer weekend so the place was packed. Our site (Q15) was all grass which was fine with us because the grass was nice and thick. There was no defined pad, instead just hookups to back in next to so you have lots of flexibility as to how you park."
Hookup availability: Research available utilities before arrival. "Call me old school, but when I camp, I want trees, space between sites, and privacy from neighboring sites. You won't get that here. Think of row houses in any city and that's what you get here. Bathrooms were clean, nice pool area and water slide."
Leveling considerations: Bring leveling blocks for uneven sites. "Some sites towards the front of the park are very close together and unlevel. If you want to be up near the action– pool, bar car, and other activities– get a site in the front section."
