Best Campgrounds near Rand, CO

July 2024.  Stock 2005 GMC 4x4 work truck,  very basic.  Some obstacles that were pretty much to the limit of my truck capabilities.  New Bronco in front of me turned around.  Once past the obstacles (which is why we do this, right?) lots of nice camping.  The only drawback is the large power lines in the vicinity.   No Verizon.  Great views.  This will probably be my go-to overnight place on my way from Nebraska to exploring more of Colorado.

First time there was around 1978. Been our favorite since. The lake is magnificent, complete with islands, giant boulders, and peaceful beyond belief. One thing that

is difficult explain why, is that every Sunset is stunningly beautiful. Have seen rainstorms that are powerful, as with all Colorado sites. We had an experience @

Lake Granby where it rained heavy the entire weekend, was not a great weekend.

After you have been to Dowdy the first time, it "gets in your blood" and likely will

be your instant go to campground.

This spot is beautiful! Stayed here one night and loved it. Got a big windy and cold but the views are worth it. Plenty of space between sites. The road gets pretty rough in some spots and I made the silly mistake of going down one side of the road that I shouldn't. My car is fine and other vehicles with higher clearance would be fine (I drive a Subaru crosstrek sport. Saw some Elk on that side which was really cool. Sunrise was beautiful. Would camp here again✌🏻

There’s plenty of space, but even at this time it gets crowded during the weekends. Lots of off roading around too.

I stayed one night and when I arrived there was a ‘road closed ahead’ sign at the entrance but there are 1-2 sites before the gate that could theoretically could be camped all year round. If you go in the winter bring some snowshoes for Johnny park road into bright trailhead. A little traffic through the night, but very light and I assume just private ranch goers, but stay vigilant as it’s in somewhat of a dead end area with no service.

My family used to visit this lake a few times in the mid to late 60’s and looking at what it is now, I’m glad we enjoyed it with much less people and more rustic campsites. Loved swimming in the cold clear water and have loads of photos, my favorite is my dad standing at the lectern in the chapel pretending to preach a hellfire and damnation sermon!! Good memories…Great times.

I scored a site here at the last minute. I appreciate the generator-free loop and the very clean bathrooms. Great recreation on the lake and a quiet place to enjoy the Rawahs!

This is a nice, large campground in the Poudre Canyon. The hiking trail is not easy, but well worth it. I appreciate the playground and horseshoe area as well as the bathhouse with coin-op showers. Great for a longer stay, or a weekend. There is a whole loop of FCFS sites in case you don't get a reservation 6-months in advance.
