Meeker, Colorado sits in the White River Valley at an elevation of 6,240 feet, surrounded by the White River National Forest and Flat Tops Wilderness. The area offers camping options from full-service RV parks to dispersed camping in the national forest, with warmer temperatures typically ranging from May through September. The region includes several reservoirs and rivers that provide water recreation alongside mountain terrain.
What to do
Explore caves and waterfalls: At Rifle Falls State Park Campground, visitors can access impressive three-pronged waterfalls and limestone caves. "The hike to the falls is short from the day use area. It is amazing! The hike also has some great caves and allows you to go up and look down on the falls," reports Billie B.
Fishing opportunities: Rio Blanco Lake State Wildlife Area offers fishing access with "great sunset views" according to GoWhereYouAreDraw N., who adds there are "lots of wildlife and ok fishing on the banks." The nearby White River also provides fly fishing options throughout the region.
Hiking trails: The South Fork Trail near South Fork Campground follows the South Fork of the White River for 16 miles. "We stopped at the cave, but didn't go in and then took the Cliff Lake Trail up a couple of miles. Beautiful views. The trail was a little overgrown so I was glad I had on pants," shares Margaret G.
What campers like
Privacy and spacing: At River Camp RV Park, campers appreciate the site layout. Gordon D. notes, "Sites are well spaced out, site 14 had a huge front area next site was ~50 yards away. Occasional road noise, but mostly the sound of the river."
Access to water features: Many campsites offer riverside locations that campers value. "Most of the campsites are shady and private. We were the only campers when we were there so we took a more exposed spot with river access," says Margaret G. about South Fork Campground.
Year-round availability: Trail and Hitch Tiny Home Hotel and RV Park (formerly Wilderness Rendezvous) offers camping options throughout all seasons. Christian M. reports, "Loved this RV park! It was super quiet and peaceful. Meeker is one of my favorite towns in Colorado. Everyone is too nice there! Stayed for two weeks and will be back again."
What you should know
Weather considerations: Mountain weather can change rapidly. At Rifle Gap State Park Campground, Aimee D. advises, "We had amazing weather and the most amazing view. The only negative was that there was no awning in our camp site... you may want to select another location with an awning."
Cell service limitations: Many camping areas have limited connectivity. Wyatt J. notes about River Camp RV Park, "No Verizon service, decent TMobile service." Similarly, Evan S. reports that Trail and Hitch has "no cell and weak WiFi reception, so I was not able to use phone or computer."
Road conditions: Access to dispersed camping often requires appropriate vehicles. Jeremy A. shares about White River National Forest dispersed camping: "If you approach from the south side (County Rd 48?), you will need a high clearance 4wd. If you approach from the north side (County Rd 51) it is accessible by any mid-clearance AWD vehicle, unless it's wet."
