promising, but

completely dried up when I visited in May '22.    This is probably a nice little fishing spot at times.   Right now it just seems  small and depressing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Rio Blanco Lake State Wildlife Area from nearby towns in Rio Blanco County?

Rio Blanco Lake State Wildlife Area is located in a relatively remote area of Rio Blanco County. From Meeker, the largest nearby town, head west on Highway 64 toward Rangely. Watch for signage directing you to the wildlife area. The access road may be unpaved and potentially rough in sections, so vehicles with decent clearance are recommended. The wildlife area's isolated location contributes to its quiet atmosphere, but also means visitors should come prepared with supplies as services are limited in the immediate vicinity.

Is camping allowed at Rio Blanco Lake State Wildlife Area?

Yes, camping is allowed at Rio Blanco Lake State Wildlife Area. It offers a quiet, primitive camping experience with beautiful sunset views. The area is quite open to the elements and can get windy, so prepare accordingly. This location provides a secluded outdoor experience away from crowds, making it ideal for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature.

What fishing opportunities are available at Rio Blanco Lake?

Rio Blanco Lake offers fishing opportunities from the banks, though the experience may vary seasonally. The lake has experienced significant water level fluctuations, including periods when it has been severely depleted or dried up completely. When water levels are adequate, bank fishing is available but described as just "ok" in quality. Before planning a fishing trip, check current water conditions with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, as drought conditions can substantially impact the fishing experience.

Do I need a permit or license to access Rio Blanco Lake State Wildlife Area?

Yes, you need a valid Colorado Wildlife Habitat Stamp and a fishing or hunting license to access Rio Blanco Lake State Wildlife Area. As a State Wildlife Area (SWA) in Colorado, anyone 18 or older entering the property must possess an appropriate license. Options include an annual fishing license, hunting license, or the SWA pass specifically for non-anglers/hunters. These requirements help fund wildlife conservation efforts. Purchase your permit online through Colorado Parks and Wildlife or at authorized retailers before your visit.
