ATTENTION BE BEAR AWARE Bears are active in all campgrounds, It is important that you store all food (dry, fresh, frozen, packaged, etc.), all beverages (canned, bottled, fresh, frozen etc.), all pet food and any product that has an odor in a locked food storage locker at the site, locked vehicle (windows and door must be locked), or in your locked camper with all windows, doors and hatches locked when you are not with it. Help us keep you and bears safe.

Shepherds Rim Campground is located near Meeker in the White River National Forest. The area features forested terrain with nearby lakes and rivers. Campers can explore Trappers Lake and the Flat Tops Wilderness, with temperatures ranging from 30°F in winter to 80°F in summer.

Overview

Surrounded by mountains and nestled near the wilderness, the Shepherds Rim Campground at Trappers Lake has 15 scenic campsites. Located at 9,720 feet in elevation, visitors can locate this campground on the right side of the road as you travel south from the Trappers Lake Outlet area.

Recreation

Trappers Lake is known as the Cradle of Wilderness. At approximately 302 surface acres, the lake contains a strain of native cutthroat trout and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife operates a spawn collection station at the Cabin Creek inlet during May and June. Trappers Lake lies completely within the Flat Tops Wilderness; motorized boats and wheeled carts for boat transport are prohibited.

Natural Features

In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the 2.3 million acre White River National Forest is a place of serenity and adventure, boasting eight wilderness areas, four defined seasons, and 10 peaks surpassing 14,000 feet in elevation. Wildlife in the area abounds. Bighorn sheep navigate rocky ridges and bull elk bugle at dusk. Scenic rivers sustain populations of cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout. Alpine regions provide habitat for pika and ptarmigan. These species, along with many others, depend on surrounding undeveloped wilderness, clean streams, and diverse forests to live.

Directions

From Meeker, take Colorado Highway 13 east for 1 mile, then turn right on Rio Blanco County Road 8 and follow this for 39 miles to Trappers Lake Road #205. Turn south on Trappers Lake Road #205, and continue for 10 miles just past the Outlet Trailhead. The Shepherds Rim Campground is on the right.

Nice reservation campground

There are 5 CGs in this area. This one is all reservation. Nice sites, toilets, water, trash, host onsite. $22)$11 senior. No cell signal though.

Bug and a Overflow Campground

This campground is similar to the others nearby. All sites are shaded really well but there are a lot of mosquitos. There are some pull through spots for RVs.

Remote & Quiet

100+ miles round-trip to the nearest gas station or grocery store, the campgrounds at Trappers Lake are the perfect place to get away. Shepherds Rim Campground is the only campground at Trappers Lake that accepts reservations. The campgrounds are surrounded by the Flat Tops Wilderness Area and plenty of places to go hiking and fishing.

RV Dump Station is just down the road on the way out.
