      Glenwood Springs West/Colorado River KOA

      Efficient and clean

After driving 4-10 hour days from Canada in our 16’ travel trailer, staying at Harvest Hosts, we decided to stop here to prep and regroup for the next leg of our journey. Full hook ups allowed us to flush our water systems, recharge all batteries and devices, and wait out some seriously nasty wind, like lift the trailer right off the ground wind (well felt like it I swear!). The place is super clean, easy to access, has great views and a helpful staff. Pet friendly with a small off-leash dog area even. Looks good for families too with a pool and water park, playground. Wifi was good and cell service at 2 bars. Not cheap but easy access to supplies and touristy spots.

      River Camp RV Park

      No fuss, big sites

Quiet place with the sound of a babbling river running along the edge of the camp. They have a few pull throughs, several large back in and a few smaller back in sites. They also offer a large open field for dry camping. No showers, but, a few porta potties around the camp. Fire rings and picnic tables at each site. The water spigots are housed in small insulated enclosures. The sewer connections are varied distances, extensions are probably needed. Our sewer connection has a small uphill to it, but still slightly below our tank bottoms. Good space between sites, some are quite remote from others. On location camp host was swift. The WiFI was poor even with the camp half empty. I walked around and did some speed tests around the camp, best speed was 500kb. No Verizon service, decent TMobile service.

      Rangely Camper Park

      Small town's campground, very nice

About 2 dozen good sized variable depth sites, well shaded with picnic table and fire pit. Some with electric. Dump station, water fill, and bathroom showers. Well kept

      Maybell Park

Good place to park, more expensive than advertised.

This is a pet friendly campground around a square park right on 40. They have electric and non electric sites, but the majority were electric (and cost more). This was advertised $15 - $20 but the prices online were $38.50 for an electric site for one night (granted, it was a Saturday in August). There were not pet fees. There were lots of spaces available when we visited.

There is no office here, you pay for your rental online or on an iPad in the kiosk (if working). There is WiFi at the kiosk, but it does not reach many of the campsites well.

Sites are close together but level. Felt safe and it was quiet at night save for occasional passing cars. No fire pits or individual picnic tables, but there is a shared covered picnic area.

Clean bathrooms. Showers were more of a 2.5/5. Not super clean and water smelled rusty. Water from sink was fine though.

Morning became very busy with travelers stopping to use the public restrooms, which may help you decide where to park.

      Deep Lake

Great Views and a Great Lake

The Deep Lake area of Flat tops Wilderness offers a variety of scenic hikes and drives as well as 4x4 trails and great lake fishing. The drive up to this area is up a dirt road about 10 miles, the road can be a beat beat up in areas. I blew a tire on my truck on the way up. Other than that the drive up is very scenic, you will pass the deep creek overlook and can see Aspen, Beaver Creek, and Vail Ski Resorts all in the same view.

The campgrounds are very large and spaced out. We went with a large group, 5 cars and many tents and had plenty of room. Some site are able to accommodate an RV or trailers. Sites vary between open and exposed to set against the forest for shaded. Restrooms were located fairly close to our spot and i remember it being one of the cleanest vault toilets i have ever used! Each spot also has a metal fire pit with a grill over top.

Like i mentioned earlier the Deep Lake area is a great base camp to go out and explore. You will find many people driving off road vehicles around. The fishing in the lake is also very good, the Forest Service stocks the lake every year. Lastly the campground sits at 10.500 ft so it does gets chilly up there even in the middle of summer.

      Rifle Gap State Park Campground

      Almost perfect..

Loved the site and the location.. easy access to Rifle Falls and the surrounding trails and climbing walls.. close to access for UTV and off-road vehicle areas as well. The remote area does not have cell service and there is no WiFi in the park. If you are trying to remote work it would be difficult. At the time of this review (09/22/2020) the lake was down over 30ft and was basically not useable except for some fishing. Overall we had a great experience here.

      Rifle Falls State Park Campground

      Waterfall, trails and friendly staff!

Campground offers easy trails, fishing, great waterfalls and friendly staff. Would recommend the walk in sites for tents. Is pet friendly which was a plus. There are two other state parks nearby and a fish hatchery. Trails range from gravel to mud (especially behind the waterfall), check out the caves and more!

      Glenwood Canyon Resort

      Overpriced and underwhelming

This campground is conveniently located off of I-70 just a few miles from Glenwood Springs in No Name, CO. The staff are pleasant and the office was very clean with some cute souvenirs available for purchase.

This place is EXPENSIVE. It is not worth the nightly rate. You are paying for the proximity to town and if you reserved a waterfront site, the view. The campsites are tiny, so be prepared to back your travel trailer into a tight spot and make friends with your neighbors. You will be in their campsite while setting up your rig and vice versa.

The No Name Grill & Bar was still closed when we were here (May ‘21), which was not disclosed on their site. The WiFi is a single unsecured access point near the laundry/bath house that did not work. There is no WiFi available in the actual campground. We had 2 bars of cell coverage on AT&T. Laundry is pricey too; $4/load for washer and $3/load for dryer. There is no vending for detergent or dryer sheets, so pack accordingly.

As beautiful as it was to be right next to the Colorado river, this place is not at all worth the cost. Save your money and drive the 90 miles to Grand Junction or Fruita for more affordable campgrounds with better amenities.

    Guide to Meeker

Meeker sits at an elevation of 6,240 feet in northwest Colorado's White River Valley, with cool summer nights often dropping below 50°F even in July and August. The camping season typically runs from late April through October, with hunting season bringing the heaviest demand for accommodations. Winter camping is available at some RV parks, though services may be limited during snow months.

    What to do

Fishing access: Trail and Hitch Tiny Home Hotel and RV Park is located near prime fishing spots. "Meeker Airport is just across the highway so every once in awhile you could see cool helicopters, airplanes come in and fly away," notes one camper, indicating the easy access to local amenities.

Mountain hiking: Take advantage of trails near Rifle Falls State Park Campground where "There are 13 RV/tent sites and 7 walk-in tent sites. The campground gets crowded during the weekends with hikers and fishermen so parking can be an issue." The park features "easy trails, fishing, great waterfalls and friendly staff."

Wildlife viewing: Morning and evening wildlife sightings are common at campgrounds along the White River. One visitor to a local campground mentioned, "Right along the white river, flowing strong in late May. Saw deer 2 mornings."

    What campers like

Proximity to water: Bear Lake Campground offers "2 great lakes that are stocked (3 kids + 1/2 hr = 12 trout) within walking distance." Another camper noted, "The fishing was great from the bank and also from a float tube."

Clean facilities: Many RV parks maintain their bathrooms daily. One camper at Wilderness Rendezvous RV Park appreciated that "bathrooms and showers were cleaned daily" during their two-week stay.

Spacious sites: The area's campgrounds typically provide adequate space between camping spots. A visitor mentioned, "Sites are well spaced out, site 14 had a huge front area next site was ~50 yards away." Another camper appreciated that "Tent sites are set back and space and trees separate sites."

    What you should know

Cell service limitations: Cell reception varies dramatically by provider and location. One visitor noted, "No Verizon service, decent TMobile service" while another mentioned, "No cell and weak WiFi reception, so I was not able to use phone or computer."

Weather preparedness: Temperature swings can be extreme, even in summer. A winter camper at an RV park near Meeker reported getting "hit with 40-60 mile an hour winds - Strongest I've experienced in six years traveling in this RV."

Advance bookings: First-come, first-served campgrounds fill quickly during peak seasons. At Rifle Gap State Park Campground, "The view of the reservoir is very nice" but because it's "super for that! Clean, quiet, and patio spots," reservations are recommended.

    Tips for camping with families

Waterfall explorations: Kids enjoy exploring the caves and falls in the area. "Be sure to explore the caves by the water fall the kiddos loved it" mentions one parent after visiting a nearby state park.

Tent site accessibility: For tent campers with children, look for walk-in sites with convenient amenities. At certain campgrounds, "they provide wheelbarrows to haul your stuff into the sites (which wasn't far)," making the process much easier with kids.

Wildlife awareness: Keep food secured as small animals are common. "The chipmunks were a little intrusive but my dog was fully entertained by them," noted one camper, suggesting both a caution and potential entertainment for children.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling: RV campgrounds near Meeker vary in site levelness. One camper mentioned "Less expensive spots are not level so I chose the more expensive option." Bring leveling blocks for comfort.

Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds require slow driving. One visitor shared, "The road is very washboard the entire way, so plan on about 45 minutes to get there from Yampa."

Sewer connections: At River Camp RV Park, "The sewer connections are varied distances, extensions are probably needed. Our sewer connection has a small uphill to it, but still slightly below our tank bottoms." This insight helps RVers prepare with appropriate hose extensions.
